Armoured Company as allies

Greetings fellow warriors of the Astra Militarum!

Now, I play Space Wolves, but am also a tread-head.  I love tanks!  So I was thinking of putting some armoured flavor into my list as follows:

A ForgeWorld Armoured Battle Group detachment:

HQ (300pts)

  • Company Command Tank (300pts)

    *Vanquisher

    • Lumbering Behemoth

2x Heavy Bolter, AA-mounted Heavy Stubber, Armoured Track Guards, Artificer Hull, Beast Hunter Shells (Instant Death), Co-axial Heavy Stubber (Co-axial Weapon), Extra Armour, Lascannon, Mine Plough, Searchlight, Smoke Launchers, Turret-mounted Vanquisher Battle Cannon

Troops (500 pts)

  • Battle Tank Squadron (225pts)
    • Battle Tank

      Lumbering Behemoth

2x Heavy Bolter, AA-mounted Heavy Stubber, Armoured Track Guards, Battle Cannon, Lascannon, Mine Plough, Searchlight, Smoke Launchers

  • Siege Tank Squadron (275pts)
    • Executioner

      Lumbering Behemoth

2x Multi-meltas, AA-mounted Heavy Stubber, Armoured Track Guards, Lascannon, Mine Plough, Searchlight, Smoke Launchers, Turret-mounted Executioner Plasma Cannon

Their main role is to be a major threat and draw fire away from the rest of the list, which consists of a Thunderwolf mounted WolfLord, a Thunderwolf mounted Iron Priest, a five man unit of Thunderwolf Calvary, a two close combat dreadnoughts in drop pods.  The idea is to super saturate with multiple high threat and mobile targets.  The Russ' job would be both long range firepower as well as tank hunting or anti-horde duty.  They also have the anti-aircraft duty with the heavy stubbers, but that's more a secondary role.

From the point of view of the tanks, do you all have any suggestions or ideas?  Are there more ideal load outs?  This is an overall 1850 point list, and I'm fine with the allied detachment making up about half the points.

Tanks will make for good support, but they look very expensive! How much good will an AA mount heavy stubber do anyway? I'd rather spend some of those points on more units, even if this was more Wolves. You can spruce up the commander some as he's worth it but they're at eye watering costs currently!

Drop all upgrades on the tanjs, except for the lascannon and beast hunter shells.with the points you just saved you can easely get another tank such as the hydra.

also make the executioner a dedicated 2+armour hunter so give him some plasma sponsons

Thank you all.  I did strip down the upgrades and got a pair of Hydra Flak tanks.  The executioner is now a dedicated 2+ hunter.  Is it worth it to tweak to exchange the standard battle tank for the Eradicator to get ignores cover?  Tyranids now seem to have lots of cover saves.

I think you may as well specialise as you've done with the other units. An Eradicator will handle light and medium infantry nicely which will be hindrances to your TWC smile.png

Thank you again for the advice. What would be a good sponson choice for the Eradicator? HB will match the range of the main gun, but HF might be better for horde control. Or would you just pass on them entirely?

The Eradicator is killy enough, plus it's the cheapest Russ which is one of it's advantages so you can take it without sponsons and it will still perform. If you did give it an upgrade then I'd go for all heavy bolters so it can slaughter 4+ and worse saves with impunity :)

I think I've got it pinned down now - my allies are HQ Vanquisher tank w beast hunter shells and an artificer hull, troops are an Eradicator and an Executioner with plasma sponsons.  All have a lascannon on the hull and armored track guards (I can't pass up the 4+ save on immobilized for 10 pts). Heavy support is a 2 tank Hydra battery for AA duty.  This I think is awesome support for my main force of 2 5 man Thunderwolf Cav units with 2 Thunderwolf Iron Priests (which can also try and repair the tanks if needed) and a Thunderwolf mounted Lord.  Lots of big threats there and a mobile force to boot (although the Hydras will stay put if they can).

Thanks to you all!

Btw WarriorFish, I love the Sun Tzu line in your sig!

I'll definitely post up some pictures when I get them built.  I'll be "wolfing them up" a bit.  My idea is to model them as the kaerl forces that guard The Fang on Fenris.  This should provide some nice modeling opportunities and a good unifying theme.  My wolves are not the baby blue color of the modern GW Space Wolves, but rather the dark grey pre-Heresy colors.  So I'll probably do the tanks in the same vein, perhaps with some grey color block disruption camouflage patterns.  Space marine scouts should give me a suitable body and head if I want to model an open hatch.

I'm not sure what Astra Militarum forces are near Fenris or even stationed in the system.  Anyone know?

You can have them be whatever you like, don't worry about who may be near Fenris as the Guard get all over the place ;) Vostroyans and Valhallans would both be good fits though and cool models too. I think your colour scheme sounds like it'd work well so I'll be looking forward to seeing them :tu:
