The never ending story...Terrain WIP Thread

Hello all... Just thought I'd share some terrain projects I've been playing around with. I've been enjoying the modeling side of the hobby a little more as there is nobody on this island that plays. I also like the idea of being a little more resourceful so enjoy. Being on an island we accumulate stuff... this stuff has to go somewhere and sadly it goes into our tiny landfill. Anyway enough back story...

I started off with some trees - dead trees. After watching some battle reports on youtube I wanted to make a few dead trees. My wife is a ceramic artist - which means people feel compelled to give her lots of left over Sculpy from whatever artsy project that had going on. Sculpy is the US term for the bake in the oven plastic clay. We have tons of this stuff and it's not really that useful for modeling anything other than hippie beads.

I found a left over spool of TIG welding wire from a previous tennant of our little home and bent it into some armatures for which to make some trees. This is nothing new... everyone here has probably made these at some point. I used to make a ton of WW2 Tamiya models when I was an angry young teen in the 80s. Here they are in their psychedelic full technicolor glory.

Basically covered the armature in Sculpy. Let it air dry for a bit then marked in some lines using a pencil / paperclip / random pointy objects

I really didn't want to spend anytime planning this. I just wanted to make something and let my mind take a break a little vacation in the process. Bake in the oven as usual...

Next step: Rattle Can flat black. I made a spray booth made out of an old Weber that was destined for the dump.

( RIP weber spray booth. was taken out by a tree that came down during a tropical storm )

The great thing about the weber is closing the lid an letting stuff dry outside. I'll have to look out for a new one at the dump. huh.png

Ok on to painting. Pretty simple really. I wanted the look of dead driftwood.

Flat Black Base coat and then started building up layers of gray by dry brushing them on.

Few more coats later....

I really like the ashen look here but wanted to include a little brown so I tried a little wash of Agrax earthshade. Not sure if I like it better or not.

The yellow tree turned out to be made from GLOW IN THE DARK Sculpy.... Never knew this even existed. My wife really loves the effect so I kept this one unpainted for now.

That's it for now. I think I maybe out of space on this thread.

Any C&C is welcome!

I've been playing around with some old CDs and using them as bases for terrain.  At the same time I had something shipped with a ton of that spray foam so I broke off a few chunks to make Planet Bombs.  Time to find some Cosmo DNA from the planet Iscandar.

I taped up the CD hole and used PVA glue to secure the Foam in the middle.  I built up some earth area around in 'planet bomb' with a mix of cornstarch, toilet paper and PVA glue.  Kinda like a 40k pinata  with the papier-mache.  Sprinked bits of sprue, random plastic bits and some left over screen.  Followed by lots of dry brushing.  I came across an old art box with some tubes of Acylic Burnt Umber and Burnt Sienna.  Looks like my terrain is headed for mars.

Here's another shot.  Great thing about these is you can whip 4-5 of them out as quick as the paint layers dry.

I'll post a few more picture in a bit.

Taking a break from painting little green men, I read about a great idea here on the B&C for making quick and cheap barrels so I thought I'd give it a try.

( Wish i could give credit to the person that came up with idea - i searched and couldn't find the thread )

Simple Barrels

Starts off with plastic bottle caps.  I used a cut up business card to help keep things aligned and glued em together.

After gluing em together I added a sliver of hollow styrene rod to make a 'spout' but really it just breaks up the top surface.  Ready for paint.

A few more WIP shots.  I had the photo booth set up to shoot my wife's ceramic work so I thought I'd show off some of my pieces.   I got my hands dirty and played around with some porcelain and some red clay.  Got this stuff fired in the Kiln and it's as hard as a rock!  I don't know if I'll get up the nerve to slap some paint on it.

Some ruins with some scrap clay - wanted to see how thin i could make a wall without it falling over.

Testing out some sand bags with some spare clay ( a little short for a space marine )

Also you can see my sad attept at making some alien rock structure.

Here's my attempt at a sandbag bunker.  Thinking about making a roof for it - or making a bigger version.

I was able to put a lot of texture into the ground and texture in the clay for the bags.   I'm tempted to make  a larger version for heavy infantry or tank support.

The white bob on the front is a little bit of the porcelin that got mashed in before firing the clay.

Finished some craters for my 'planet' bombs and a bombed out section of a building.   For all of these I used old CDs for the base,  a mix of paper mache / PVA glue for dirt, topped with sand and random bits of plastic.  One of these days I'll get around to building an entire board to match.  I'm going for the wastelands / post apoc theme.  Working on a story line to fit in my Dark Angels, Chaos and Nids.

I'm going for the bombed out Red Planet look - think Madmax on Mars.

Any critiques or compliments mucho appreciated!

Been a while since I've posted anything here.  Finally got some paint on my 'barrels' from earlier.  Since a few layers of different browns and coppers.  I'm going to use this to practice the old salt n' hairspray rust effects.

Had this old computer box sitting in my office for too long..  I'm thinking the styrofoam end would be a decent Remote Firebase.

It's kinda hard to take a good picture of this sitting on my desk.

Here is the start of it.  I'll try to get some inprocess photos going.
