Need some help with a Successor Chapter idea

So I've been starting to put together ideas for a successor chapter, partly because I'm stripping a lot of my models down, paintwise, and repainting them (due to a lot of them being painted when I was still learning how to paint properly, and looking very sloppy, so I wanted to do something different with them, hence successor chapter), and partly because I enjoy coming up with fluff for them.

Originally, I wanted to call them Omega Angels, and have them operate as a sort of Black-Ops unit, doing things that would normally be viewed as extreme in the normal chapter. I wound up scrapping that, partly because of the Chaos army I'm working on, which is a mix of pre- and post- Heresy Death Guard, and wanted to link the two together. My idea right now is to make them similar to the Disciples of Caliban, intent on specifically hunting the Fallen (in the DoC's case), and Death Guard in the case of my own chapter.

Colorwise, I've always wanted to do dark greens and blacks, and wanted to work the theme of Plague Doctors in, giving the beaked mask look to troops, whether as a chapter insignia or on the actual helmets or both.

If anyone wants to give critique on the theme or ideas, fire away. I still have no idea what I would name this chapter.

OK, I'm back.

So, it seems like what you want to do is marines who are into sneaky black-ops style quick-insertion strikes, with that typical "heroic" Dark Angels focus on hunting down the Fallen to the exclusion of all else. Here are some questions that might give you some ideas:

  • How independent is the chapter? It's well known (well, suspected) that the Dark Angels basically seize control of their successors whenever possible and put them under the command of the Inner Circle, allowing the chapter to continue to operate, more or less, as the I Legion. How successful have the Dark Angels been at dominating your chapter?
  • Why are they focused on hunting down the Death Guard? What has the Death Guard got that would interested the Fallen-obsessed Dark Angels?
  • What is their operational specialty? Deathwing? Ravenwing? Ordering power armor bolter brothers? Drop pod strikes?
  • How do enormous power armored dudes do black ops? Do they employ lots of scouts? Specially trained chapter serfs (perhaps represented by a kit-bashed Astra Militarum or Tempestus Scions Ally force)?

I don't think they're really independent at all, though, keeping with the chapter's tone of secrecy, the Dark Angels will kind of recruit them for black ops-style missions, but keep it totally under wraps. As far as the Death Guard thing, my idea kind of stemmed from Balthazar and the Crimson Slaughte . Something (as of now undecided) happened to one of the high ranking members of the chapter, at the hands of Typhus, so they hunt the Death Guard down for vengeanc .

I'll have to remember to come back to answer the rest late .

I too was going to do a successor but instead decided to work on a pre-heresy theme.  Going back to black.  Maybe a group loyal to the lion who was pulled into the warp and reemerged to fight on against the Xenos and CM fanatics.  Who better to lead that group than Cypher who they feel is still a high ranking individual.  Keeping with Cypher theme he always seems to manage to take out bad guys so why not use a portion of the original 1st Legion to do this with all the while with them not having knowledge of it.

Ok maybe that's a stretch, but I lucked into a couple sets of DV Dark Angels Models and thought this would be a fun way to change up my Army a little while still playing the Dark Angels.  I hope to eventually pick up some forge world models in order to have a better themed unit to include jet bikes, contemptor dreads, etc.

Best of Luck to You.  Keep us posted on what you try.  Once I get my stuff painted up I'll share too.

The plague doctor theme is a really interesting idea, much more so than the black-ops actually. What if your Chapter's speciality/mandate is hunting Fallen Angels who have dedicated themselves to Nurgle? Perhaps they view such Fallen as the most loathsome and dangerous of all their kind, and focus more on exterminating them rather than capture (after all, it's going to be rather difficult to torture a Fallen Plague Marine, so the DA's normal 'methods' aren't really going to work).

Just did a quick bit of research on Wiki and apparently Nostradamus (the one who wrote all the prophecies) was actually a plague doctor. Perhaps you could work prophecies & divination into the Chapters background somehow?

Colour-wise, a lot of the images of Plague Doctors show them with black clothing and a white beak/mask, which could make quite an interesting scheme, eg; black armour and a white face plate. It would also tie them into both the pre-heresy DA scheme and the Ravenwing (as would the beaky helmets obviously).

Potential names: Angels of Deliverence, Eradicators, Ravens of Sorrow.

Hope this gives you a few ideas, and good luck with your new chapter!

I like the plague doctor theme as well. What's interesting about the plague doctors is that they were actually remarkably effective hazmat suits using premodern technology. Everything about the image of a plague doctor - the mask, the robe, the hat, the lenses in the mask, the stick - were all designed to solve a problem that the science of the time couldn't answer for.

So, perhaps you cold replace "black ops" with "hazmat." Your Dark Angels are specialists at going into Nurgle infected areas and remaining pure, through a combination of meditation and technology. And if they're hunting a group of Fallen dedicated to Nurgle, as Spaced Hulk suggested, that could be a good reason why.

The Nurgle-devoted Fallen is a good idea. That actually made me realize that, in a narrative campaign my friend wrote for us to play, he mentioned that Typhus had a bunch of Plague-ridden Fallen with him, leading the Chapter to the planet in the first place. I think that, in conjunction with ElectricPaladin's idea of them working as a hazmat unit is great. They do hunt for the Fallen that have given themselves to Nurgle, but will also go in to worlds where other devotees of Nurgle are, to prevent the plagues from spreading further.

I really like the Eradicators name. Honestly, naming them right now is between that and the Purifiers, even though that's already linked to GK, but that doesn't worry me too much.

I'm definitely going with the black armor, and I think instead of white (mostly because painting with a lot of it gives me trouble), I'm gonna do their accents in bone colors, which also ties in to the history of the Deathwing, even though that link isn't terribly important to this Chapter.

I was gonna split the reply, but I wound up covering most of the things I was going to reply to your post about in response to SpaceHulk. I don't know if I can show the use of technology on the actual models, but I can definitely work something in fluff-wise. The meditation aspect is really good, too, using the Librarians and Chaplains to strengthen their bodies and minds from the infection.

Also, thank you for all the input on this. The questions you asked yesterday definitely helped to solidify the foundation for the idea.

This is very important bit for me.

I can tell you (for the first time ever)  about my chapter

+ My chapter has no name

+ Greenwing, Deathwing and Ironwing (vehicles) are all dark green, Ravenwing bikes are green but their armour is black

+ Almost all of my marines wear robes

+ Everyone has pieces of their armour made of stone, these pieces of stone com from pieces of Caliban

+ They have no shoulder insignia, no numbers, no names except Landraiders, nothing signifying any membership in any squad, almost only after their gear can  they be recognised

+ They always are seen led by Librarian or include Librarian in the battlefield

+ Their machines wear no numbers, nothing signifying any company, they also are adorned by pieces of masonry carved from Caliban

+ But those machines are almost completely covered in intricate prayers, edging on the border of being of apostatic, as well as intricate mural icons
