Wow. That case was definitely worth every penny you paid for it. Should send the manufacturer a note. Let them know they can use your pics in exchange for a new case.

Now THAT is a good idea. Someone give me the phone number for Games Workshop stat!

Huzzah! And that Captain you painted all those years ago looks mighty fine :smile.:

As for the Watcher in the Dark, he looks pretty damn good, especially when you take into consideration that its painter hasn't picked up a brush in nine years!

Thanks for all the kind words and compliments everyone. Much much much more to come.

I live in Dallas, Texas like always. TEXAS!

So before I get stuck in on these very detailed and complex Terminators, I decided to get some brush control practice under my belt by working on a normal rank and file Emperor's Saints Marine.

I have 2 full squads painted from Back in the Day, so as I was looking through my case, I saw the third squad that I had already prepped, primed and muddied. I even used this squad when I played, giving them just enough paint to make them game shop legal. That paint being some brown splotches around the feet to represent mud. So I randomly picked up a beaky helm guy and set to.

I'm pretty pleased with the results, but I'm fighting a shaky hand, and a TERRIBLE work space. I finally got some good lighting, but I'm essentially sitting on the floor working on a coffee table. I miss my house. :sad.:

Anyways. Pics or leave...

I tried to make the beaky helm look...well like a beak! Crows will feature more into the iconography of my army as I move into the future...I dunno if this works though. Thoughts?

Next view lets you see the purity seals better. The one on the shoulder pad was broken, so I made it look like it had been burned. Note the Crow feather for the squad marking.

This last shot shows a side by side with a member of Squad 2 (circa 2002): you can see how my skulls look quite different now. This is even reflected in the art here on the B&C! Compare the logo I did at the top to the "Mark Forum As Red" icon on the main page. I used to make the upper jaw really wide, and the nose and eyes really small for some reason. Now I have much more realistic proportions. I was also able to be more accurate with the way it looks because of a technique I literally dreamed up last night for painting the Emperor's Saints icon on the shoulder pad. What I do is paint a few shades of bone/white in a solid circle on the pad. Then create the shape of the jaw under that, making a "Q" shape. I then grab a trusty fine point Micron pen and DRAW the details in black! Wash some brown over the top for weathering and done!

Starting to get that creative feeling back now, where I create things quickly and getting the flow of the paint and brush...

+ EMPEROR's SAINTS STORM SHIELD WIP +

Back In The Day, I created an assault marine, and thought...they have swords...why not shields? So being as the fluff of the Emperor's Saints is that their gear is sorta...well...scratch built, because they are vagabond warriors using whatever they can get their hands on (aka they're poor)...you may recognize his shield.

Granted this was way before all the shiny new shield bits you can get now! I was copying the storm shields of the Necromunda Adeptis Arbites, which the doors from the old rhino kits were perfect for. I found an unused one in my bits and paired it with a Chaos bit (with the star shaved to become a cross). Throw in some nifty new "rope" from the jewelry section of the local craft store and I came up with this:

(You can see the old assault marine proudly holding his shield with hand painted Saints chapter markings.)

I wanted the "cross" plate to feel like it had been nailed on roughly over the Marine's shield. It will look like a holy relic, and I'll put some purity seals on it as well as painting "scriptures" in the more open sections. The rope might eventually have some talismans hanging at the ends, but that might not make it on this version, as I just came up with that idea right now and its probably too late!

I've been working on another marine as well, but he's pretty much done. If I get a camera for Christmas, I'm going to take a Butt Load of pictures of my old stuff. I have a scratch built light box made now, but the LED bulbs and my phone camera don't like each other much. If Santa doesn't bring me a camera, then I'll just go get one myself!

Either way, stay tuned.

So I often get asked how I paint such fine details on my shoulder pads to create my Emperor's Saints chapter symbol. There is a trick to it that keeps me from going insane and looks great!

+STEP 1 is to paint out the shape of the symbol. For me this is a circle, with a skull placed near the bottom. I sketch it out in very thinned out white paint, and then once I get it set, I fill in to a full white.

For me, since my Marines are supposed to look dirty and battle worn, I don't worry too much about making the white perfect, just making sure the shape is symmetrical! Believe me it takes practice and a really good brush!

+STEP 2 Is the part where I "cheat" a bit. Because my Marines armor is black, I then use a very very fine Copic pen to add the eyes, nose, teeth and other details.  The pen tip is 0.05, so half a millimeter!

BS WIP shoulder2

+STEP 3 Is the weathering, usually VERY thinned down greys and browns. This does 2 things: it gives the art a worn in look, but also helps to take the shine off the pen ink!

This method would work for many other things as well: I use the pen to add the writing to purity seals, screens, lettering. I just get such a better line and have so much more CONTROL by using a pen, even over a #000 brush!

Finally got in my house, settled some things, got some furniture, and have started making marines again!

ALSO, I'VE BECOME A STREAMER ON TWITCH! ::: https://www.twitch.tv/bloodsaintxii/ :::

I don't have a set time of day that I broadcast, but if you hit that link and give me a follow, you will get a message when I go live!

Anyways, on to the WIPS!

So, I was consolidating my bits, cutting them all off the sprues to fit them in my bits box, when I ran across the tech marine torso, head, and shoulder pads on the 2nd Gen Rhino. I realized I didn't have a tech marine in my army! So I dismantled a partially painted trooper, and got to work making him into a Tech Marine.

I used parts from ancient times that have been sitting around in all their pale grey plastic glory since I started collecting (1996).

The backpack is the old METAL \m/ space marines, created around 1990. I chopped off the side pods and glued on some random machine bits from the rhino and land raider sprues.

The head, chest and shoulder pads are from the 2nd Gen Rhino (1999) The shield and base are also from this sprue

The power fist and axe are from a weapons sprue from 1992

The wires are from old telephone wire, and guitar string.

Looks good BLOODSAINT!  Are they ranked up in a Thunderhawk, space hulk, or one of the launch bays for some drop pod delivery goodness?

Uh...maybe?  Hmmm....Nope! They are standing victorious on some long forgotten battle field, basking in the Emperor's Light as they survey the fallen Xenos that litter the ground in puddles of green tinted blood and gelatinous, deformed organs. Or something.  Its a remix of the VERY VERY old T-shirt design I created back the day (WH40k 3rd Ed):

Scout, Marine, Veteran.

Well well well, look whose back from the warp! The eldest dreadnought of all! Good to see your still kicking, you and the saints. Love the artwork!

...BTW, you haven't seen my frostblade around here have you? ;)

THE space wolf! Yooo.  Thanks for remembering this venerable old lost soul.  There is a spark of life left in me yet.

Nah haven't seen this uh...frostblade...of which you speak.  Nope.

Anyways.  I got excited on this art and skipped right from rough sketch straight to the 98% final product (gotta color balance in photoshop).  Thoughts?

Ahhh I've missed your artwork, sir! A joy for the eyes!

Don't give me any of your BS, BS! I know, you know, where it is! I left it next to my kibble bowl near my throne in the SW forums...I'm gone for a few decades and my relics are....misplaced!

Edited by space wolf

Brought in the art to photoshop for color correction and to even out the black tones (i used three different black pens).  Also the chainsword is red now.  What y'all think?
