Morning, troops

Recommended Posts

Just signed up and thought I'd introduce myself. I'm just back into the hobby after a 20 year hiatus. I started playing during second edition with an Eldar army. Now that I'm back I've decided to go Imperial Guard, still having trouble calling it Astra Militarum.

I'm an ex-Army Tanker so I've decided to base my Army off the 2nd Armored Cavalry Regiment. So far I've played 4 games 2 against IG, 1 against the Arch Enemy and 1 against Black Templars all about 1000 points which is what I'm fielding right now.

3 Leman Russ:

 Vanquisher, Battle Tank and Executioner

1 Basilisk

1 Wyvern/Hyrda

1 CCS

1 Platoon w/2 squads

Grenade Launcher and Flamer

1 Chimera

Currently 2 hvy weapons teams

Heavy Bolter and Autocannon

I've got some more heavy weapons teams on the way. Just trying to figure out a couple of things. Have Stormtroopers been replaced by Scions and are Veteran Squads still used?

I'm trying to fill out my army. Thinking about a Vendetta next and more troops bu I want to be an Armor heavy combined arms team.

If you guys are interested I'll post pictures of what I've painted so far.

Welcome back to the hobby Chef, and to the B&C! :D Congratulations for your ascension from puny pointy ear xenos to the real men of the 41st Millennium too ;) Almost as good is seeing another tread head join the ranks :D Much has changed since 2nd Ed but I think generally for the better, the game is also quite a bit more similar to 2nd than it has been with the variety of alliances and such you can muster which is great news.

First don't worry about the name, many of us craggy Vets still talk about the Guard - plus AM is already short for Adeptus Mechanicus in my opinion. You can field good tank lists now, or even full tank armies if you go unbound (I assume you are familiar with this?). Generally though it's best to take a more mixed list as it is arguably more effective; tanks are quite vulnerable to assault so escorting infantry greatly adds to their survival odds :)

Stormtroopers and Scions are the same thing, just different models if you want to be picky. Veteran squads are their own Troop choice and are good, with 3 special weapons and BS4 along with a nice selection of doctrines. For a tank list I'd recommend a Platoon, as they can provide cheaper bodies to do the grunt work plus flamers can help them perform their role much better for a meagre cost without sacrificing the valuable BS4.

Last but far from least we would be very interested in seeing your models :D Let us know if you have any more questions and we'll be happy to help :tu:

WarriorFish, Dinotanker or Jedi? I served with E Trp 2/2 Cav from '89-92, B 1/69 Ar 92-93 and then independent commands from 93-94 go to train with Israeli, Dutch, Egyptian and British tankers.

Still getting back into the swing of things. Hate not being able to do anything against armor with my flashlights, I mean lasguns.

Welcome back! Ahh got my backside handed to me so many times in the 2nd ed by those pesky pointy ears, memories (thats probably enough xenos talk or the commissar will have a bolt round with my name on it). Look forward to seeing your models.

still having trouble calling it Astra Militarum.

So does Games Workshop, apparently. The only time Astra Militarum is used is on the cover. The rest of the book calls them Imperial Guard.

Besides, my primary army has been Sisters of Battle no matter how many times they change the name on the cover.

Hail and welcome to the forums, Chef. You're in good hands here - you need to know something, I'm sure our esteemed brothers can give you the answer or at least point the way to one. And yes, some pictures would be nice. ;)

Welcome to B&C Chef, looking forward to seeing your army get rolling! Tank lists are very fun, but as Warriorfish says, a combined-arms approach of various elements is often the best approach in game terms. There's lots of fun toys that Guard can field, and not that many of them are explicitly bad, the only ones that spring to mind as such really are Rough Riders and Ogryns.

Also, it's never too late to consider converting to the Greater Good, human! Join the Tau Empire and build a brighter tomorrow, today!

Welcome to B&Csmile.png

A Vendetta is a good choice, it needs some converting since there isn't a complete kit for it in the Valkyrie box. But since you haven't used the Lascannons with your HW teams, you got a good start right there. I mostly equip my HW teams with Auotcannons.

still having trouble calling it Astra Militarum.

I refuse to call them that.

Never drove a tank in the army. But in the mid/late 1990s(my army days) I drove quite a few vehicles, but the vehicle that stood out was a terrain vehicle. While not so fun on the roads, it was a blast on the terrain course not far from the army base.

If I ever see a experience/adventure company that offer that istead of the usual super cars, I'd be more than happy to pay for it.

I got you covered.

Armor Leads the Way!

Toujours Pret!

Basilisk in cover

One of my last games. Things started off very well until the Archenemy Daemon Prince took to the skies and I had no way to handle that. Now things have changed. Hyrda added to the Regiment and I'm about to finish my Valkyrie.

Nice paintjob on the Guardsmen, and I know your pain with regards to taking out those pesky FMCs! Gone are the days when a lucky hit would have one crashing to the ground and finding itself a sitting duck for a Demolisher.

Hydras may have a little trouble against that 3+ Armour Save these units typically have, but I agree with the others that a Vendetta really gives your opponent something to fear. A Vulture Gunship is also excellent air-support.

Ha! the way you're holding the Imperial Guard is a great angle with the red(?) paint splatter behind him.

Cool stuff I like the camo netting over the basilisk in your game.

My wife mentioned this to me after I posted the picture. I hadn't really noticed that splatter behind him.

So the Vendetta with the lascannons is the way to go?

  • 4 weeks later...

Pask's Demolisher

After a day long building and painting fest. I'm nearly finished with my Leman Russ Demolisher. I have to say that Games Workshop did a great job with this model by making it very easy to change out the main guns. I still need to finish the tracks, the Demolisher cannon, put the final wash on and paint the Knight Commander Pask model.

That is almost the same camouflage scheme as my Tau! Thief....

Looking good and nice to see that you have the same approach to painting vehicles as I do, sub-assemblies ;)
