For the Glory of Terra

Right, so having left the glory of golden Fists to better men I have turned my attention to the dogs of the VIIIth. But not Curzes Nostramo filth, but the brothers of the Crimson Sons. My room is a pain to paint in, I need to get some lamps and daylight bulbs, but all the plug sockets are connected to Christmasy type stuff so will have to wait. But, with the poor light a VIIIth Legionnaire should enjoy, I have got this:

I hunted my house for a place to get this picture and it's still dark! Hopefully you can see what I am trying, a muted tone. Hopefully as I get back into the swing of painting I will get a better blend from dark through to light. The blood from the eye is causing problems, I've tried Tamiya clear red, blood for the blood God, and this mix of blood for the blood God and a bit of Evil Sun Scarlett to try and give a bit of colour.

The lightening was also a test, I want to get as thin as possible, so it's a hint of lightening. I will probally reserve the lightening for certain models anyway. Thoughts will be appreciated.

Here's how I do mine:

Take a dark red color, in my case I used Sanguine Base from P3, and mix about equal parts with black. I dunno the new GW colors names, but GW Scab Red in the older set would be ideal for this. Use this mixture to make the tear tracks and paint them a little thick. Add more red to the mix and paint thinner, brighter tears, and you can keep adding red and doing thinner, smaller strokes like you're layering line highlights as much as you want.

To help smooth everything together, I went over it with some thinned down red ink and then hit them with a 50/50 mix of water and Future Floor Wax to give a little hint of shine and help make them pop and stand out a bit.

You might try painting the tear streaks on another figure or even on your palette or a piece of paper to get the hang of it, because when I first tried it, it was surprisingly difficult to get the look how I wanted it.

Thanks for the advice, will give that a go. I found my mix looked great as a drip,on the silver colour of the mark III but got lost in the dark blue of the face plate. Then I think I over compensated with the vibrancy of the red and was to bright. I will certinally try what you suggested, and will aim for better brush control.
What about getting some Tamiya Clear Red, or Citadel blood for the blood God, and have it like actual blood? Not that there's anything wrong with your two, but personally that's how I'd do it (mainly because I have a pot of the Tamiya I rarely get to use).

I went out and bought a jar of Tamiya Clear Red specifically for this and I tried several different ways of using it for the bloody tears and I didn't like how any of them looked. Of the probably 10 different things I tried for the bloody tears, this is the one that worked best for me. YMMV.

Fair enough, worth a try I guess. I'll do a tester one and see if I can get the Tamiya to work, bloody hell, gonna have some Night Lords too soon. I do like yours (both of you) but I like the sheen the Tamiya has like wet blood, and I know it probably is dry blood on the Crimson Sons helmets, but the image of crying blood proper like, is bloody cool. Excuse the pun.

I approve of your scheme good sir ;)

I had a realization of the perfect lord marshall piece so I just ordered a lord solar macharius pewter model on ebay :)

So I'm thinking of using the enforcer model as a Strategos.

Keep going demon my buddy

Kind of upset I didn't get to see another fist for inspiration, but non the less I was going to go for crimson sons if I didn't go fists! Like your scheme, not to much lightning (did the crimson sons have lightning?) so it doesn't detract from the excellent scale job you've done. If I may humbly support using tamiya clear red or blood for the blood god to give them that "realistic" fresh blood look? Maybe mix in some black to give a deeper colour? Keep it up!

I have tried both clear red and blood for the blood god, the problem is over such a dark base, it just doesn't pop in the way you want it to. If I had done the the faceplate another colour, like a metal, I am sure either of those would work great.

The pic of the Crimson Son in Massacre had no lightening but doesn't mean they didn't use it all. But I will be keeping its use low, I am thinking of doing a Shock Infantry force, with Breachers, and may use lightening to decorate the shields.

Same with the terror markings, I want less gory stuff and more savage style, skulls, maybe the odd taken head, animalistic markings. I am toying with the idea of using the terror heads as a sort of VIIIth legion deathmask.
