Creating a battlezone, my WiP Terrain thread

Recommended Posts

Hi All

Just thought I'd share some of the terrain/scenery I've been making recently.

I've decided to make 12" x 12" tiles to form my gaming board. This should allow me to store it easily, give me lots of configuration options, and incorporate FW's awesome ZM sets. So without further ado, here's the WiP of my latest pieces. I'll upload some of the ones I've already done a little later:

First two pics of the edge of the sump tiles. I plan on building a jetty, and will use these pierces for Necromunda as well

Next couple are the main body of the imperial control tower and floor layout in the control room

Should end up similar to this

Bonus cat pic

And I've started using Kranon for scale ;)

Evening Chaps,

So here's the update on my terrain:

First up, the edge of the sump tile:

http://i1245.photobucket.com/albums/gg586/clarkus-maximus/2015-01-05224006_zps75ef650e.jpg

http://i1245.photobucket.com/albums/gg586/clarkus-maximus/2015-01-05223949_zps1a6230db.jpg

So I've added water filtration units to the base, and sprayed up the concrete, I've also sprayed it black further out to represent how deep it gets. Question now is how do I pour the clear resin so it only goes as far as the edge of the tile. I need it level and I was thinking of using tape along the edge but I can't see if working. Any suggestions?

Next up, my Control Tower:

http://i1245.photobucket.com/albums/gg586/clarkus-maximus/2015-01-05223745_zps0e3e87bf.jpg

Excuse the tins ;)

http://i1245.photobucket.com/albums/gg586/clarkus-maximus/2015-01-05223708_zps9a0f3817.jpg

I'm pretty happy with the way it's going so far! I've left the observation room detachable from the tower, for storage purposes. I need to figure out how/what I'm going to put in there, and if I want a roof on it. Suggestions?

Also I've ditched PVA for good. I now use this stuff:

http://i1245.photobucket.com/albums/gg586/clarkus-maximus/2015-01-05223837_zpsefa0124a.jpg

This stuff sets much quicker than PVA, much stronger bond, and if you use a metal ruler to spread it out it kinda looks like concrete once set :)

Finally, Bonus Cat picture, with Kranon for scale ;)

Looks like you will be playing on some awesome looking terrain soon! I would love to put a Blastmaster Noise Marine or some Obliterators on the top of that tower. *Now I am drooling.

I was also going to ask for a Kranon-for-scale next to your cat from the first post. Good to see it in the most recent one :)

Thanks Hushrong! It'll be able to fit your obliterators if you can make it over here ;) If not I may end up getting some 30k Noise marines and fitting them up there, just for you.

Not able to do any more on it tonight, so here's some pics of previous tiles I've made recently. No Kranon-for-scale unfortunately.

And if you double up the road sections they can fit knights and baneblades! :)

The clear resin you can pour by having a sheet of Perspex along the open sides. If memory serves me right you'll be able to pour and after setting remove it. I bookmarked some tutorials on my old laptop. Trying to resurrect it at the moment as it crashed. If I do will forward on the tutorials.

@Hushrong, No it's a Forgeworld Landing Pad they released years back. I'll see about getting you some more pics once I've painted the crater.

@SW1, You best had then mate! msn-wink.gif though to be fair I've not had a productive night.

Tried creating some 3" high tubular vent stacks, with the plan of having them so you can "stack" them on top of each other, so that I can use them for bridge supports for walkways (this came about as I was thinking about necromunda terrain as I'm going to carry on with the sump theme I've started.

I figured that using wall filler would be a good way of texturing some cardboard tube I was using, but I was wrong, it was too thick and didn't spread well, then the cardboard got soggy. Can't win them all I guess! I still like the idea stackable vents to hold up the walkways I plan on making. just have to find something else to texture them.

anyway, I bought some MDF terrain ( TTcombat is the name of it ) and I think it's really good! bought a generator and satellite dish for £4 with free postage:

http://i1245.photobucket.com/albums/gg586/clarkus-maximus/Terrain/IMG_20150107_212046_zps5vag6np7.jpg

I've now ordered some shipping crates and a missile defence battery, as I like the way it looks. Question is do I use that dish on top of the control tower or use FW's radar turret?

Also got some barrels, but they're a lot smaller than GW barrels:

http://i1245.photobucket.com/albums/gg586/clarkus-maximus/Terrain/IMG_20150107_212109_zpssvlizn82.jpg

Thinking of my control tower, I need some ideas on what console units I can have in there. If anyone can point me in the direction of some resin ones that'd be appreciated. I'm gonna start working on the roof as soon as I have the consoles sussed. Also could do with deciding what to put on the control room floor.

Comments welcome.

What size do the consoles need to be? About to start work on making some and just need to decide on the sizes for my own scenery.

In regard to the supports I'd build square ones out of foam board. Got an idea in my head at the moment for something similar. Will try and knock one up while it's still in my head. ;)

Console wise I wanted roughly an inch, inch and a half high, probably the same width as a single console, a bank of consoles 3-5 inches wide depending how many consoles are in a row. What kind of consoles are you thinking? I am potentially very interested ;)

That looks good, turn it upside down and you have what I was thinking. Why not round though? I was planning on making a round framed suspension type bridge.

Console wise I'm trying to work out what size I need to make them. Thinking of being on a slant with the front about half an inch and the back rising to just over an inch, not sure on the width depends what looks right.

The square frame is just what I had access to material wise. Round would require telescoping tubes to be able to slot into each other, if you can get hold of them would work nicely. Though not sure where to source the right material from without getting daft lengths. Easier if you was doing on mass scenery for multiple tables.

I'm also thinking it's easy to cast details up and stick to a flat surface than a round one.

So I've had to wait for materials to turn up to carry on, but I'm now working again.

First up is the Control Tower, is now looks like this:

http://i1245.photobucket.com/albums/gg586/clarkus-maximus/Terrain/IMG_20150117_094523_zps2d4iuajp.jpg

http://i1245.photobucket.com/albums/gg586/clarkus-maximus/Terrain/IMG_20150117_094531_zpsntcxtvyw.jpg

http://i1245.photobucket.com/albums/gg586/clarkus-maximus/Terrain/IMG_20150117_094601_zpstjjtwvg5.jpg

http://i1245.photobucket.com/albums/gg586/clarkus-maximus/Terrain/IMG_20150117_094610_zpscgzaxfpi.jpg

So now I have to come  up with some consoles for the interior, and a roof! I'm thinking the roof will be removable and stepped to allow a radar/satellite dish.

Also, I've had some more MDF terrain delivered, here are the results:

Now that's some fine looking terrain you've got going on there. Really liking the textured flooring on the roof bit.

Not got round to the consoles yet. If I get something done in time I'll send you a PM. ;)

Perhaps coating the foam in PVA (white glue) and water would protect it from the resin. I'm not sure at all and just throwing an idea out there to save the work you've done already. Maybe try coating a test piece of foam and introduce it to some resin to see what happens.

Doh ... That sounds like you're having an annoying time with the clear resin. :(

PVA is water soluble and likely to dissolve in the wet resin so wouldn't use that to seal the edges. If I was tackling the issue I'd more than likely make the side edge out of plasticard or some other material.

What type of clear water effects are you using?

I've decided to forget the clear resin and try some of this instead:

As for my control tower, I've hit a bit of a mental block on how to finish it, best I could come up with so far was using part of a Bastion, but it doesn't feel right.

http://i1245.photobucket.com/albums/gg586/clarkus-maximus/Terrain/IMG_20150208_110320_zpsnxuwgqsf.jpg

http://i1245.photobucket.com/albums/gg586/clarkus-maximus/Terrain/IMG_20150208_110330_zpsdfb09xal.jpg

Also I'm not happy with the finish of the walls on the control room, it doesn't really fit, so I may try taking it off and trying again. Also I may have built the wall a little too high as while Kranon can see over well enough, he is a 7-8ft tall marine and a regular human (who this is meant to be sized for, can't see over it!

http://i1245.photobucket.com/albums/gg586/clarkus-maximus/Terrain/IMG_20150208_110710_zpsvpcbaaxz.jpg

I've found a power generator and console from secret weapon mini's and the console looks just the job for use in the control room, so I'll fit them soon enough:

The control tower is looking good. The bastion tower piece isn't too shabby for the top section of the tower. I'd reckon more antennae and sensors will make it look more fitting and this sprue is chock full of goodies to be used over and over. Maybe even add some search lights too.

What I think the interior walls need are consoles and maybe a "step" up to the wall here and there so figures could look out and over them. Most of the time control tower crews are glued to their consoles to direct traffic.
