Defense of the Contrador

Ordo Machinum

Hail Captains!

I'm currently working on a few Battle of Phall scenarios based on the Zone Mortalis rules from Extermination.

I've been working on my Imperial Fists lists and purchases, and since Captain Polux may be making an appearance soon I thought I would make some purchases for the much needed opposing force: Iron Warriors.  I'm not an IW player, but I need a decent IW defense force.

The Defender's rules allow for an 800 point list with the following slots to be filled (or not):

HQ. Erasmus Golg (175 pts)

HQ. Is this needed? or worth the points?

El. ?

El. ?

TR. Golg allows for Terminators as Troop choices. Would Terms fit or take away from the other slots?

TR. ?

TR. ?

TR. ?

FA. ?

HS. ?

HS. ?

Fluff from The Crimson Fist novella briefly mentions IW using bolters, flamers, and chainblades.

Any ideas? As I'm the only one in my area building an HH army, I'd like a useful IW list to build and have ready should I get an opponent.

Whoa... that's a lot of points going into Golg. He has two reasons for being taken - his unique access to a HQ with a chainfist, and the ability to take Terminators as troops without a Rite of War (and at under 1k points, you can't get a Rite of War, so that helps). His other benefits are fringe - Hammer of Wrath is roughly 1-2 extra wounds a game at this level. With *only* Ld9, his morale rule isn't that powerful, as most units have a Ld9 sergeant anyway. If you're not taking advantage of both at this low a points level, don't bother taking him.

A Minimum Terminator Squad is 175pts - equipped with Bolters and Power Weapons. As you want to be sending Golg with a chainfist against armoured targets, such as Dreadnoughts, or rival Terminator Squads, you'll likely need another Chainfist in the squad, and then mixing Power Mauls and Power Axes - and I'd personally take advantage of taking a pair of combi-plasma's - rather than a single blaster, you now actually get 4 shots against enemy terminators. They don't have to be plasma, they can be melta if you don't fancy tangling with a Dread - but personally, I'd run a Terminator Squad (Cataphractii, might as well, as his presence in the squad removes your ability to Stand and Shoot, IIRC - although I'll have to double check if this doesn't fall under the Codex trumps rulebook rule). Either way, kit them out the same. So Cataphractii Terminators, 2x Combi-Plasma, 2x Power Maul, 2x Power Axe, 1x Chainfist. This brings them to 199pts - combined with Golg, this leaves you with 426pts

Another squad equipped for taking out Marines, with just 3x Swords/2x Axes brings you to 251pts.

2x Tactical Support Squads with Volkite Chargers comes in at 250pts

A list could look like

Golg

Cataphractii Terminators, Chainfist, 2x Mauls, 2x Axes, 2x Combi-Plasma

Terminators, 5x Swords/2x Axes

Tactical Support Squad, Volkite Chargers

Tactical Support Squad, Volkite Chargers

This gives you only a 21 model army, and despite having LoS Blocked, and no barrage weapons allowed, cover is scarce, so be wary. You can replace Volkites with Flamers, giving you a further 50pts to spend - if you dropped the cataphractii's chainfist, you could take a pair of Tarantula Sentry guns with that.
