Gree
I am not sure if this should go in painting or in here. I apologize if this is in the wrong sub-forum. Now...has anyone painted up a force of these guys? http://wh40k.lexicanum.com/wiki/File:IF_VII_Legion_Vet.jpg The Pre-Dorn Unification era scheme, with the grey armor and the yellow arm. I was thinking about painting up a squad of MKII guys in this scheme, but I was uncertain if anyone had done them first and had any examples they could offer before I started. I'm uncertain of what color to use for the grey in particular. Any advice would be appreciated. Slips
I'd personally do the gray as a Darkened Silver. So Leadblecher or Ironbreaker washed with Drakenhoff Nightshade and/or Nuln Oil. For flat gray I'd go Eshin Gray washed in Nuln. That said, I haven't seen anyone do the unification era scheme... Emperor's Furor
I'd do them Eshin grey but have the edges metallic as if it's metal with chipped paint. Nehekhare
I think it's metal armor, not grey - in awed reverence of the colours of the IV.th Legion, which at the time was already raking up victories together with the I.st and V.th as one of the greatest legions when the VII.th, due to their inefficient implantation process could not field enough warriors to balance their losses. Ordo Machinum
I have been considering a Unification force on-and-off for the last few months. I keep leaning towards the yellow for a 'Battle of Phall' look, especially since the Alexis Polux model image appeared. The Emperor's Thunder Warriors and early Legions' armour was described as being a 'Storm Cloud Grey' colour. Atia
yeah, but the iron hands were also described as black, and we got metallic-black :P classic storm grey would be something like this: http://img5.fotos-hochladen.net/uploads/latest1nve4h0o1as.jpg and even this guy has "metallic" highlites :p Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/302095-imperial-fists-war-of-unification-colors/#findComment-3922810 Share on other sites
Ordo Machinum
@Atia: ...and yet another reason for the Imperial Fist / Iron Warrior rivalry. Lucien Eilam
I've always assumed the pre-Unification grey was the basis for the later Codex Grey that RT-era Guilliman thought everyone should paint their tanks. I think that's Dawnstone in the current Citadel range. Emperor's Furor
I was wondering would you avoid using any of the imperial fist markings if you did unification era army? Hyaenidae
I was wondering would you avoid using any of the imperial fist markings if you did unification era army? To a point, yes. The Fist Icon wasn't around yet, so many of your markings and awards would be focused during the Unification. The Roma campaign badge, Raptor Imperialis, etc. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/302095-imperial-fists-war-of-unification-colors/#findComment-3923047 Share on other sites
Ordo Machinum
I was wondering would you avoid using any of the imperial fist markings if you did unification era army? To a point, yes. The Fist Icon wasn't around yet, so many of your markings and awards would be focused during the Unification. The Roma campaign badge, Raptor Imperialis, etc. Here are a few references, which echo Hyaenidae's comments about symbols... Horus Heresy Volume I: Betrayal, The Legiones Astartes, p.27 "... and the numbers of these new enhanced warriors, at first armed and armoured as the Thunder Warriors had been, grew swiftly and they were organised into twenty distinct regiments numbering at first no more than a few hundred warriors each." "... Some of this 'Thunder Armour', first named for the Thunder Regiments that were the Legiones' forebears, was newly forged, but the Emperor's warsmiths also took or canabalised many suits from the armouries and corpses of conquered foes. As if to mark a break from the wars of the past the armour was cast in storm cloud grey, and bore only the thunderbolt and lightning marks of Imperial unity." "... Over time Legions gained their own marks of distinction and character, and names - Emperor-given in some cases - came to replace numbers, with many Space Marine companies seeking to single themselves out from their brother Legions. Battle honours were accumulated and the effect of each Legion's character worked upon them, so that as the Legions expanded to conquer the galaxy, storm cloud grey became granite, silver, viridian, iron, sable, gold, ash or ice, and by the time of the Triumph of Ullanor, the Grey Legions of unity were gone, lost to history." Stormborn
I went for IF Veterans. I started off with THE FANG as an undercoat, base colour is Mechanium Standard Grey and plan to drybrush with Ironbreaker. I'm not quite sure what I'm going to do for the yellow at the moment as I'm still waiting for my yellow paint to arrive.
