Gateways to the Soul

Recommended Posts

As you might have guessed, this post is about eyes. Namely: HOW DO I PAINT THE EYES ON THESE THINGS?!

Sorry for that outburst. Ahem. Used to, for gaming purposes, I'd just leave them the same as the skin tone or, if playing Marines, they all had helmets. Now that I'm not playing anymore, I'd like to get this sorted. It does no good if your Guardsmen have no eyes- they can't hit the side of a barn, er, big tyranid thing!

Sometimes, the whites will be correct and then the pupil's gone off the other direction to where I want it. Other times, the whites are all wonky and nothing works.

If anyone can help me, I'm using standard Citadel brushes- and don't be giving me that "they're no good!" crap as these are the only brushes I've had that last any amount of time- and standard, watered-down Citadel paints. Should I be using a wooden toothpick?

Not a bad idea - my old man's method was a needle to paint the finer things on those old Napoleonic models (old oil paints).

If you don't have a super thin brush tip, then try something very pointy and thin (be careful) like a toothpick etc.  Have you access to a magnifying glass?  There's plenty of choice now with added lighting to aid in that close up work.

Personally I can't paint faces for toffee, so I stick to all helmet wearers (yes, even in space :P ).

I think the no-eyes route looks really good when done right. It makes their eyes look like they are shadowed or squinting. All you have to do is give the face a wash of flesh shade or brown and then re-layer and finish the face. This is IMO your best bet for a good looking face especially when using the thicker brushes like Citadel as it doesn't require any extra precision.

Here's an example from From the Warp:

Kaedes Nex nailed it imo. Google full body shot and look at the thumbnails you see there, go ahead and hold a mini up to them on your computer and you'll see they're about the right size. Even with pro pics in a studio most of the people you see are just going to have a shadow where their eyes are. It's only once you start zooming in that you see the eyes. Now if you're planning on doing competition level close up head shots then by all means paint the eyes, with a needle and a high power magnifying glass if need be to get it right, but for table ready paint jobs don't kill yourself! $.02

So, just to make sure I'm understanding this technique:

Reikland Fleshshade wash over flesh basecoat

Kislev Flesh drybrush over the whole head

Add stubble and sundry other things to head

Don't worry about the eyes as they are the basecoated flesh and wash?

Excellent, gentlemen!
