WIP: 75th Karshaki Dragoons (25 March) Basilisk Complete

Recommended Posts

Good work on the March msn-wink.gif!

That Wyvern looks fantastic all put together. The gloss varnish will make that screen pop, agreed. Are the green mortar boxes on the sides weathered at all? It could just be the pictures.

As always, keep it up thumbsup.gif!

So with a bit of motivation I was able to finish the Basilisk this evening.

I think I'll probably go back and dry brush the barrel to even out the wash that was applied. I'm also looking to get some German WW2 artillery crewmen to add to the back. Barring that, I'll add a couple of spare guardsmen.

I still need to assemble the second wyvern and paint a few chimeras, about 45 infantry and a Commissar. Most of those are conscripts who I will probably paint in olive drab with brown helmets, representing leather, to give them a hastily equipped feeling.  I think they will look good with Father Josiah.

Thanks for all of the positive feedback and support! I am almost done with the second Wyvern. I just have the crew to finish and assemble the railing. The Dragoons march to war today to participate in a small tournament so I will let you guys know how that goes.

I participated in a team tournament today which allowed 1250 per team mate, custom missions and no knight titans or super heavies allowed. We had a total of four teams and each round your team mate changed.

My list:

CCS - lascannon, chimera

Commissar

Priest

PCS - 4 flamers

3 x infantry squads - flamer, autocannon

30 conscripts

2 Veteran Squads - 2 meltaguns, chimera

Vendetta

2 Wyverns

Basilisk

Game 1:

Team Mate: Necrons
4 C'tan
2 Warrior Squads and a Necron Lord

Opponent:
Eldar:
Farseer on jetbke
2 Warlocks on jetbikes
2 x 5 Dire Avengers, wave serpent
2 x 3 War Walkers
Wraith Knight

Tyranids:
2 x Flyrants
1 x Hive Crone
2 x Carnifex
Zoanthrope
6 ripper swarm bases
Another bug that gives shroud to everything around it (I forget the name)

I would end up playing with or against the Eldar and Tyranid player for the entire tournament.

This was an objective based game with a mix of ruins and forests on the board. I used a split deployment and castled up the infantry platoon, CCS and wyverns in a ruined building and had the veterans, basilisk and conscripts on the other flank. The C'tan deployed around my forces and the necron warriors were kept in reserve along with the vendetta and second vet squad.

The game was a slugfest. I was able to kill a warlock on the first turn and the farseer and his buddy fled the table before they could do anything. After that things went downhill as we just couldn't deal with the volume of fire coming from the war walkers. I managed to kill three war walkers while my team mate tangled with the bugs but in the end it wasn't enough and we lost by one objective.

Game 2:

Team Mate: Tyranids (same guy I just played against)

Opponent:
Eldar: Same guy I just played against

Grey Knights:
Librarian, ML3
2 Terminator Squads
Storm Raven
2 Dread Knights with Heavy Incinerator and Heavy Psycannon

The deployment was vanguard strike and we lost choice of table edge so we got put on the side with ZERO cover. There was a single objective in the center of the table. They seized on us and things went from bad to worse from there. The NDKs just about killed my entire army with the incinerators and heavy psycannon shots. I lost the command chimera to serpent shield shots, the wyverns and basilisk to outflanking war walkers and my vets were murdered by the terminators. I think I killed six  Grey Knights and a war walker before getting tabled. Bad deployment, bad positioning and bad dice rolls killed me. My team mate survived the game with one model left. Sad.

Game 3:

Team Mate:
Eldar (the same guy)

Opponent:
Tyranids (the same guy)

Daemons
Daemon Prince
Pink Horrors
2 Soul Grinders
Plague Bearers
I can't remember what else.

This time you scored a point for every turn that your warlord held an objective. The first two turns were night fight. There were three objectives on each side of the table. This time I deployed my wyverns, basilisk and CCS in a large ruined building, the infantry blob held the center and the conscripts were on my left flank. I rolled the warlord trait allowing me to outflank D3 units and I nominated both vet squads for that. We seized the initiative and we laid down the pain. My wyverns killed his Tzeentch summoning battery while the infantry horde moved up field. The idea was to use my infantry to bog down the Soul Grinders while the Eldar whittled down the rest of the opposition. The game plan worked out well and we were able to kill everything except one Soul Grinder. The conscripts did the Emperor's work and killed 10 daemonettes and 10 plague bearers and getting line breaker. The Veterans killed a Sould Grinder and then died but did their part. It was good to finish the day with a victory but I had to shake my head at how disgusting the Eldar list is with all of their tricks and rule ignoring gimmicks.

So at the end of the day I went 1-2 and took fifth out of eight players but I learned quite a bit about how to use the Guard more effectively.

Glad that you came away from it learning more, it'll serve you well in the future! Eldar are always going to be a pain and there's no easy way to combat them - hatred is your best weapon ;) The second game sounds a bit off though, table deployment shouldn't have an entire side devoid of cover.

We had a hill and a small forest in our deployment zone but neither offered any real protection from enemy fire. The GK termies and NDKs were in my face on turn one and they just wrecked me. Even if I'd had some cover it wouldn't have protected me from the NDKs. In hindsight, it being 20/20 and all, I should have deployed on the front line to absorb the alpha strike with the tyranids just behind or intermixed with my units to protect his flyers on the ground on the first turn while they were vulnerable. Everyone were Allies of Convenience for the tournament so it would have been okay. I don't have an answer for the Eldar trickery though. Orders helped me destroy a wave serpent in one game and then my CCS was dead. Outflanking War Walkers are just mean, pumping out over 20 shots into rear or side armor. I'll have to think about that one.

By the third game I was starting to get the hang of the army and the list. I have another 1250 tournament in April and I'll probably bring the same list just to build upon the experience that I've gained.

One thing that did irk me is that the eldar player had a base representing his WK so it was hard to keep track of and his summoned daemons were all just bases as well. That didn't sit well with me but I didn't want it to sound like sour grapes so I didn't say anything.
