I'm sorry if this was already asked in the thread, but if so i missed it. How do you do faces and skin on your figures? They look amazing (just as all the rest of your guys). Personally i suck at painting faces and would like to try a few things to become better at it. Would you care to enlighten me?

The tutorial on skin is coming along nicely. Its at the wash stage now....

In the meantime Ive now discovered how to make wrapped sheets/cloaks etc out of magic sculp

Expect all troops to have them soon

Ive also had a go at giving a marine a shoot down stance to be at my heavy weapon wall

Hands and arm need filling and cleaning up

  • 1 month later...

Well after a bit of a break I managed to get some paint on some minis this easter weekend

Ive completed three more troops and finished the heavy bolter and gunner (just got the standing trooper to do)

As always there are a few mods.

The bolter has been modified to be like the marine bolters with an ammo pack below it rather than a belt feed (this was an ebay win and the belt was missing)

The troops all have sculpted packs on their backs. These painted up ok.

The last one is Ive given one of the troops an old school FW marine melta . Im not sure of the legitimacy of this but it looks cool

The back packs turned out ok

Rocking an old school Melta... not looking too happy though

Cool stuff!

The paintjob is gorgeous, as always, and i very much like the box-magazine on the heavy bolter. I wouldn't worry about the melta too much... Someone who refuses to play against such a nice looking toy certainly deserves a smack an the head with your trusty dreadsock:wink:

Ive finished another scion

this one had his antenna broken off so I removed the light and I think these look better. They would make cracking marine scouts.

Next up is a couple of banners as I need some height in the squad

Standard bearer number one is almost done

Just got the flag to sort now

Ive tried something different with the face and instead of washing it Ive built it up from shade and highlights manually.

It makes you realise how big catachan parts are, the head is massive.

Thanks for the likes but Im really stuck on the banner now

I want to incorporate blue but I cant seem to think its too dark and doesnt pop enough

Its not attached so im happy to strip it but what do you think. Keep in mind I want to incorporate the pdf blue

Looks good to me too

I agree maybe some gold on the pole

The ornament at the top

Have you tried watering down some runefang and using it as a wash on the flag?

I used a similar technique on my GK force weapons worked well

But given the curved surface of the flag it might pool weirdly

Thanks, its not done yet but Im not liking where its going so thought Id throw it out there for comment.

Im almost at a point where Im going to strip it and restart the flag. Whats odd is there arent many examples of this one on the web (loads of the scion one)

  • 3 weeks later...

Ive been a bit quiet as Ive been working on deathwatch and the anniversary marine but as they are about done im back on the Guard!

Ive got a few things for the ETL but for the moment Im getting this Bullgryn slowly finished. Managed to get the shield done today

Ive tried to do a bit of a glow but may need to pick out the power points in a lighter green now Im looking at the photo.

Also started work on another mini diorama / scenery piece

I did the other one as a base for a flyer but didnt use it so this is kind of an extension

Remember troops, the only good bug is a dead bug.

Your work is excellent as always

What colours did you use for the insignia on the shield?

 Thanks

For the skull?

Its pure white and then when its dry its a wash of blue ink (old drakenhof nightshade) mixed with lahmian medium. Then turn the mini up side down so it drys on the shadow.

What I then did is edge highlight with pure white and then paint blue ink into the very darkest areas of the wings

Hope that helps
