So played my first game with guard against a friend (who used my tyranids) mostly to teach us both the rules. I have 3 40k armies and have played twice... The guard is 4 chimeras, 3 squads, a command squad, 2 sentinels and a squad/valkarye in reserve. The tyranids are - 2 primes, 20 genestealers, 12 warriors, 39 hormagaunts in total, 3 raveners, a carnifex and a mawloc. Everything bar the warriors had rending claws or crushing claws if it could. Not a single gun in the army!

--------

"Get in your grace." she said calmly whilst pulling the man by the arm. With efficiency she guided him towards the open ramp of her command chimera watching as he stumbled under he efforts tripping over his garishly elaborate bed robes.

"This is most unusual! I demand you get your hands off me!" came the entirely predictable reply from the govenor. "What is the meaning of this! You barge into my mansion at Emperor knows when in the morning and manhandle me by the arm?" he had the decency to look embarrassed after he had implied the Major was a man. Gracefully she ignored the insult. He reluctantly took a seat in the vehicle - after a few seconds trying to decide which seat was suitable for his rank and glancing at the black capped gentleman who pointedly sat next to him. "Whom do you think you're dealing with!" he continued indignantly as the Major sighed heavily and took her own seat. She indicated to trooper Garrett to push the ramp controls.

"Your planet is under attack." She shouted over the sounds of the mechanism. "We have been instructed to bring you back to safety."

"Hogwash!" he spat back. "You common soldiers have been saying that for months and these so called 'Aliens' haven't shown so much as a hair. You have clearly been exadur..." A cough from his right stopped him.

"The Major is correct your grace." the black capped man spoke. "Contact was made nearly a day ago and martial law has been declared."  The governor choked on his tongue incredulous before the man cut him off. "Which you would know if you hadn't left the city as you had been instructed not too." He nodded at the Major who in response touched her ear and spoke to the driver. After a few seconds the engines roared to life as the chimera set off.

"What of my staff!"

"The Emperor help them." Black cap replied unenthusiastically. "They're about to have a bit of a bug problem."

Turn 1.

http://i290.photobucket.com/albums/ll277/mogsam_moogle/IMG_0393_1.jpg

For a few hours the convoy had been travelling and thankfully the govenor had run out of things to say after a third of that time. Instead they travelled in silence, the only noise being the revving engine and the occasional reports from the other units in the escort. They travelled in a defencive formation, 3 fully armed transports forming a perimitor with the governor in the command chimera in the middle. For the rear guard two sentiels trundled behind with their metalic legs clearing the terrain fast enough. It was almost enough to convince Commander Barison that they were going to have an uneventful trip. Almost.

"Contact." chimed the earpiece. It was Sergant Poplar of first squad. "Drives spotted some bugs, little ones and some big ones, 2 and 11 o clock." he stated quickly and to the point. Whilst Barison hadn't been commander long he knew enough about Poplar to know the man knew what he was talking about. "Will be within range in 2 minutes.

"All squads prepare for combat." Major Svenson replied, her voice echoing from the earpiece and from being so close. "Remember, shoot the big ones first." A number of voices replied in the affirmative. "Emperor protects."

http://i290.photobucket.com/albums/ll277/mogsam_moogle/IMG_0394_1.jpg

[Mission being played is one of our own devising. It is a convoy being ambushed by a Tyranid force slightly bigger than itself. On the first turn the chimeras trundled forward, their objective to get the governor to the other side of the board but not knowing the nids weren't far. The Tyranids deployed on eitehr side and swung in. The Nid force actually has not got a single gun in it but it has a ton of rending claws!]

-------------

Turn 2

Thud, thud, thud. The sounds were coming constantly now as other chimeras heavy bolters launched their payloads into the bugs charging headlong into their convoy. Even from inside the command Chimera it was clear they weren't killing enough of the monsters, the command console flickering showing the enemy combatants in terrifying numbers. "Report squad 1." he spoke into his comm bead.

"Unloading shots into big beasty. It's taking hits but still coming. Going to have direct contact momentarily." came the stoic voice on the other end, though Barison couldn't help but note the undertone of fear. Just looking up he could see the other officers were coming to the negative conclusions he was, The governor remained blissfully ignorant for what good it was worth.

"Gunner." he spoke to the crew of their own transport. "When in range fire on the biggest beasts." he commanded as he heard their own gunner open with his bolter. He supressed a curse as the blips moved closer. They just couldn't kill the monsters fast enough.

Turn 2 to continue tomorrow!

That's a good way to learn the game, don't get bogged down in additional stuff and just do the basics. You can build up in future games smile.png Looks like you're learning the perils of advancing on 'nids and not bringing enough guns though msn-wink.giftongue.png

The remaining report. Honestly lost enthusiasm but wanted to finish it so it's very bare bones now with way less writing.

--------------

Even from inside his transport he could hear the beasts rip squad ones chimera to shreds, the sound of claws tearing through metal grinding loudly. It was unsurprising when the comm bead in his ear chirped. "Squad one bailing out, engaging." He didn't envy them their circumstance but it was clear that there was not enough firepower in transports alone.

Turn 3

"Squads two and three,  disembark, controlled fire into your targets." came the Majors order quickly followed by new marks on his command display as men and women moved to obey. The governor gave a groan of fear.

http://i290.photobucket.com/albums/ll277/mogsam_moogle/IMG_0399.jpg

"Driver, go around, the first priority is the package." The screen flickered as bugs went down under hails of las and bolter fire but mostly the bigger dots remained.

http://i290.photobucket.com/albums/ll277/mogsam_moogle/IMG_0400.jpg

He chatter on his bead indicated that squad three had given the biggest beast a beating but it was still standing.

http://i290.photobucket.com/albums/ll277/mogsam_moogle/IMG_0401.jpg

Before long though the dots moved into contact with their soldiers and worse came. With the sound of an earthquake and brief screams. "Major." came a fearful voice over the channel. "Squad three is down." it stated. "Monster game out of the frikken ground and they're gone. Firing on target." The governor was becoming hysterical and whispering under his voice.

http://i290.photobucket.com/albums/ll277/mogsam_moogle/IMG_0402.jpg

More bugs flooded their tanks and before long squad twos transport was gone from his display, it only signs of its destruction coming from the massive exploision he didn't need technology to hear...

http://i290.photobucket.com/albums/ll277/mogsam_moogle/IMG_0403_1.jpg

... The noise was short lived however and was followed by squad two going silent over the comms and desperate chatter from squad one was all that could be heard.

http://i290.photobucket.com/albums/ll277/mogsam_moogle/IMG_0404_1.jpg

(the lone sergant actually kills the carnifex at this point in close combat! but I figure he's probably a bit busy and then promptly gets eaten by Hormagaunts when they flee!)

Turn 4.

"Go driver!" the Major shouted above the slaughter. "Gun it!"

The driver responded by sending their chimera flying over the terrain leaving the charnel field behind, the sole chimera and what little remained of their support crews firing at the bugs desperately. The only solace was the chimears heavy bolters turning the remaining genestealers who'd survived the explosion into red paste.

http://i290.photobucket.com/albums/ll277/mogsam_moogle/IMG_0405.jpg

A crackle entered his ear. "Expedition do you copy? This is lieutenant Brascovik in air support." Flutters of hope returned to the desperate command squad.

"Reading you loud and clear." came their measured response.

http://i290.photobucket.com/albums/ll277/mogsam_moogle/IMG_0406.jpg

"Deploying north for extraction, covering fire will commence." he declared.

http://i290.photobucket.com/albums/ll277/mogsam_moogle/IMG_0410.jpg

"Roger that, we will move north and meet you." the Major replied as an unoptimisitic amount of smaller bugs began to filter towards them but the larger bugs seemed to be thinning out.

http://i290.photobucket.com/albums/ll277/mogsam_moogle/IMG_0409.jpg

(The covering squad manage to finish off the Raveners in combat and the Genestealers through firing.)

http://i290.photobucket.com/albums/ll277/mogsam_moogle/IMG_0411.jpg

Turn 5.

"Shoot the big ones!" he commanded to their gunner and the guardsmen with him. With meltas pointed out the hatch and heavy bolters firing the remaining bigger beasts were turned into flaming mush, leaving only the gaunts.

http://i290.photobucket.com/albums/ll277/mogsam_moogle/IMG_0412.jpg

The biggest threats were down and the command console showed sporadic signs of bugs but something as wrong, what had happened to the big bastard who had killed squad three?

http://i290.photobucket.com/albums/ll277/mogsam_moogle/IMG_0413.jpg

With another great blast of earth the monster appeared, but it was too little too late. It had missed its mark by too far and the command chimera revved its engines and fled to the awaiting evacuation. (In turn 6, the Mawloc was too far away and the gaunts had started eating each other. There was a few big bugs killing sentinels but not close enough to matter and were mostly being spiteful!)

Yeah won just about. Though the death pile was pretty bad. By the end there was a small squad who survived because they turned up so late and the command squad. Everyone else was very, very dead. The Mawloc was the only real threat left though after the gaunts started eating each other.

Also took these before I stacked up the table away.

Full army (with new Russ I picked up)

With those completed it is just touching the bad bits up - the Majors chainsword, some sort of squad markings and little bits like that. Then onto the Sentinels, Ratlings and the Plane.

I'm liking the yellow. It's a pain to work with, but when you pull it off, you get big kudos! The weathering you're doing looks great too and does a good job of toning it down.

I thought these were just going to be allies? It would appear that you have caught the bug and are full fledge Astra Militarium! 'Tis a bad disease to catch if you aren't looking for it.

Thanks! I'm working on the plane but the weathering looks too organised so will have to tone that down massively! Plus I seem to have lost one of the cockpit windows.. unsure.png

I have 1,000ish points of Yellow Guard so this will be it for the minute, but I have 1,000 points of Yellow Marines as well. So that means I need 2,000 yellow Tyranids right...? The new tank was because my guard seemed to be missing a big enough gun! I wanted a Basalisk!

What is the general size of average games? IN fantasy it's 2,400 but this seems too big for 40K!

What about some washing to mix things up? Average game is 1500pts, and arguably what the game is designed for but it depends on your local area. Some areas like different sized games for example I think in America games tend to be larger - up to 2500pts I think.

As WF said you could add some small pin washes to the rivets and panel edges. Thin it down first and add it in layers. Going too dark at first would be areal downer. You can always add to it, it's more difficult to take it away.

Don't forget decals either. Add them before your weathering.

As for the weathering being 'too organized', maybe just add it around the bottom of the sides and front of the vehicles. Take a gander at some actual tanks in photos to get a good idea.

I am full of ideas for you if you need them

Personally, I like them and where your going with them

Thankfully then I'm UK based! Might take the army up to 1,500 then. Slowly mind! I don't play 40k often but I love that I can paint 55 guys and it's an army! Fantasy isn't that generous. Though the costs are horrible in 40k too, 10 for £18! I have done a few washes so that's a good idea. Will do some more, need to decide the baes though before can really commit to that. I work for a wide format printing company so can do a decent 40k board for quite cheap as long as it's not 3D!

I wasn't planning on adding decals. I've lost the sheet and whilst I can make some at work for free I'm not too keen on them!

It's the plane that it looks odd on as I've just accentuated the edges.

If you have any ideas go for it!

Purchase online for savings, even more so if you buy battle forces ;) Slowly and surely is the Guard's way and it's also a great way to build an army. You might even paint the models you have before getting new ones...

No you won't

If you have any ideas go for it!

Add some stripes! Call it 'The Hornet!' Something aggressive

Here's a great idea that works across the board, troops, tanks, and aircraft and it really raises the look of everything.

An oil wash! Seal them with a gloss coat, purity seal works fine. Then get a small tube of burnt umber or equivalent oil paint. Also grab a can of odorless turpentine/turpenoid. Take a pinky-nail sized dab of the oil. Add a cap full of thinner and mix it up real good. Then with a clean brush, just touch around a rivet or a panel line. The paint will flow down and around for you. If it's too dark, pull some of the paint off with a clean brush with a bit of the thinner. Alternatively, you can go over the entire craft or tank, let it sit for 30-45 min and take a large brush dampened with thinner and drag it over the vehicle in the direction of the wind (aircraft) or gravity (tank). It makes it look sufficiently used.. There are quite a few youtube videos on this if you don't want to dive in, I understand. But you do need to break up the yellow somehow

Here's one of my Storm Talons for example

IMG 2568

Thanks for the advice! I've seen the paint thinner thing before, I think it'll be worth a go, i'll pick some up tomorrow and have a crack. Will try to finish the plane as well!

I think this army will go to 1,500 anyway before it finishes! It runs at about 1200 at the moment! Need to decide what else to get for 300! I figure it's artillery and tanks?

Thanks for the advice. As it happens I won another Chimera on ebay so no current squad will go in the plane at the moment! I'll probably grab a veteran squad with 3 plasma guns after watching the instant death they poured into my Hive Tyrant last week!

Anyway I have been working on some side distractions whilst I get over having painted so many guard so quickly before going back! I intend to have 3 1,500 point armies - Nids, Marines and Guard.

Here is the first Marine painted in a new scheme, I decided the old one wasn't as good as it could have been.

http://i290.photobucket.com/albums/ll277/mogsam_moogle/IMG_0423.jpg

I like to do black with Charadon Granite and then giving a few nice coats of Badab Black. Pure black tends to be hard to get right so I just cheat :P Black and yellow Marines are great, Scythes are one of my favourite colour schemes :)

I like the Scythes but I prefer the DIY approach to give them a background! Need to think of a good name, I think in fluff the homeworld will be an agri world organised heavily so maybe some sort of horse related name! Stallions of something or Thoroughbred something something!

But Scythes are pretty awesome, second only to the Lamenters is good fluff!

  • 2 weeks later...

Update! They are now colour coded to go with their tanks. I have done several squads but took a quick snap of this one!
