Hellhounds....

Hello there Brothers, I am here to ask for your assistance in a very pressing matter. Should I run Hellhounds in my 7th edition army? Are they worth the points as so far my opinion on them is they're too squishy and I could run a few Russ's in their place. Also is there any way that the hellhound sprue allows you to create a chimera as I am thinking of getting the "Hammer of Cadia" set for an armoured force and need both tanks and chimeras.

Thanks,

The hammer of cadia box only has the hellhound sprues so if you wanted to convert them into chimeras you would have to buy the missing parts from a bits store but I don't think that would be cost effective.

Better to buy the chimera seperate or with the infantry squad.

I think that while hellhounds do have their moments, Russes are more reliable and pack a heavier punch as well as being more survivable. Punishers are a better anti infantry unit against hordes and you have normal LR Battle Tanks to deal with marines. As elmo said, you can't really convert them into chimeras. Maybe a Cadian Defense Force or two would be a better purchase, as it offers a decent discount and you get plenty of useful units. Then you could buy a couple of Russes and Chimeras and have a fully functional army. If you have the spare money, you should totally get a Baneblade as well! I got one recently (well, a Shadowsword to be exact) and it's incredible! biggrin.png

Thank you both for replying, bigted c'mon I live two blocks from you just walk or even better text.... But thank you elmo on the idea of buying bitz to convert to chimeras, I athink it would most likely cost effective and much easier (bitzbarn for life)  but I'd have to check that out as I am short on money right now.

Indeed, welcome to the B&C! :D I have long used Hellhounds and their variants to great effect - I don't have 4 for nothing ;) They are solid medium armour but their strength is in their speed and hitting power. Send in a Hellhound and you can be sure to do horrible things to all by heavy infantry. Template weapons are golden as you don't need to roll to hit; just put that template down and you know you're doing something and that reliability is great. The high strength of the gun also puts wounds on Marines well so there's always something for it to do!

They work well in support of advancing units like infantry/Chimeras and the like and serve valuably as a rapid reaction force thanks to their speed. Speaking of Marines, if you're having difficulty send in a Banewolf - it'll soon be as useful for the fear it causes as much as the models it kills ;) The Devildog I've used less but can be quite effective if you have the big/expensive enough targets for it, such as hunting heavy armour or elite infantry. Again, it hits hard so can do as much drawing fire and forcing your opponent's hand as slagging things.

They're also cool models to build and paint and last but far from least very easy to magnetise :)

@Warriorfish @scattmandoo, thank you so much for your help on this topic. Unfortunately the Ork player I know has moved to a different country (damn it now we lack a good WAAAAAAAGH!!!) and the current player I mainly play against is Necron. But thanks for the advice on the movement being key, I always hated the low armour value but I guess you could easily knock off it's points cost and then some on the enemy army. Yet again much appreciated and I hope to see some hellhounds rolling out of production (when I get around to doing it).

The speed of the thing as stated is very useful. Good for objective grabbing and making the most of 2 weapons due to being a 'Fast' vehicle.

Also, open-topped vehicles are also hit with the flamer. A trick I have been pulling off a lot recently against the Orks.

As for Necrons, they could still be useful due to warriors being AP4. If they're not used so much, a Devildog and MM will do nicely.
