The story I wish I had submitted, part 1

The sky was a kaleidoscope of angry greys punctuated by the brilliant azure flash of lightning. The deluge of rain was a heavy blanket of fist-sized droplets no amount of rain cover could stop. Everything was saturated and everyone was soaked to the bone. Everyone save the five Deathwatch Space Marines that stood as motionless as statues. Their lesser compatriots from the Imperial Guard weren't as lucky or unaffected by the downpour, but they waited patiently for the ambush to begin despite the conditions. The heavy rains reduced visibility to about a dozen meters or less, but more detrimentally it turned the heavy sands into thick mud. The glue-like muck had little effect on the space marines, but the Guardsmen were already suffering from the cold and fatigue from trudging through the heavy muck. Cold and fatigue were precursors to reduced combat effectiveness. The Guardsmen had already suffered one fatality and one injury when two tanks became stuck in the mud. Both vehicles had to be abandoned, lessening their combat effectiveness already. The mud would continue to hamper their forces, but would have little to no effect on the xenos skimmer vehicles they were set to ambush. The plan was to immobilize as many vehicles as quickly as possible to take the Tau's mobilization from them to level the playing the field.

The sitting and waiting sat ill with Brother Sergeant Hadrion and the rest of Killteam Phædra, but they knew it was absolutely necessary at this juncture. Phædra currently did not have the numbers or equipment to assault the Tau head-on. Sergeant Hadrion's initial plan was a combined air ground assault against the Tau command structure, but the weather moved in and grounded all aircraft and turned the sand to mud fouling many of the tanks. Angrily he was forced to abandon his plan and instead set up ambushes. Though all Space Marine Chapters are aggressive and prefer a straightforward engagement versus skulking around like neophyte scouts, some Chapters were more patient then others. Sergeant Hadrion hailed from the Dark Angels, a chapter known for their tenacious stubborness, and though he had been removed from the scout companies for over fifty years, he stubbornly forced himself to remain patient. Both Brother Khyros from the Iron Snakes and Tanis Colhannon of the Storm Wardens were barely held in check. Sergeant Hadrion knew both marines would be the first to charge into combat the moment the trap was sprung.

His other two killteam members, Metriculon Stihl from the Sons of the Medusa and Reznor from the Death Strike Chapter were extremely patient. Reznor was the team sniper and carried a heavily modified Stalker-patter bolter. Using the powerful targeting scope, he was the team lookout. He has probably selected the most advantageous position and lain completely still these past several hours, never moving, barely breathing, probably not even blinking. But Hadrion knew he was watching, he had met no better sniper in all his time as a Space Marine. Metriculon Stihl was more calculating versus patient; each movement, shot, action well thought out in advance, calculated and precise as is the nature of his chapter.

Patient or aggressive, stubborn or calculating; every marine was a killer, and just one of them was enough to ensure success of the mission, but Hadrion didn't mind the overkill. They were here to assist the embattled Imperial Forces on Belkin Secondus to rid the planet from invading Tau forces, and they would take every action necessary to accomplish their mission. Reinforcements were on the way, Sergeant Hadrion and Killteam Phædra were the vanguard, sent in first to begin operations, paving the way for more forces to follow.
