+++Prot's Grey Knights Hobby / Gaming Thread+++

- Below in this post you will see my initial painted mini's. I decided to expand on that with a 'Contents' section which will provide you with thread links and forum links to stuff I've done, covering much of the hobby, for my Grey Knights. Please enjoy, and feedback is always appreciated!

Hey guys,

I finally actually finished the first 1K of models plus another half squad of Interceptors. So even though I am leaning towards selling off this army, I wanted to at least show I had accomplished my own challenge, which was to finish painting:

Librarian HQ

5 Terminators

10 Interceptors w/Magnetized backpacks (IE: they can be 10 Strikers)

2 Dreadknights.

Enough blabbering! Time for pics:

+++ All 10 Interceptor / Strike Sqaud members. Note 'basic' backpacks are painted to the right of the picture.

+++ A close up of the main squad showing most special weapons. I decided to go with 32mm bases for the infantry

med_gallery_2760_10611_328119.jpg

+++ The Terminators, complete with hammer, and accidentally assembled a Psilencer! No big deal. Love the twin falchion model on the Justicar.

+++ Big close up of the Librarian, books and all.

Thanks for having a look!

Looks nice, it'd be a shame to sell them.

Thank you. I haven't made a final decision. In fact I have started a 'vote' thread in the Hall of Honour. I can't hold on to every power armoured project anymore... it's just too expensive, and most of all, too time consuming.

Wow, lovely job Prot!

I especially love the force blades. I have a serious love affair with icy power weapons.

Thanks Flint. You'll have to push over, 'cause I am loving the icy power weapon look too. ;)

It's a thing where that colour just seems to scream 'emperor's energy' to me. I do go a bit darker than some methods I've seen but I'm really happy with it.. for once. Thank you.

Amazing... i like it!... what a shame you will sell them... why? if i could ask...

I'm glad you approve! As I mentioned, I have so many projects going simultaneously I feel like I am spinning my tires. I need to let something go.

I have other armies too, especially Necrons which of course I cannot post here, but I have over 3000 pts painted including all the new stuff. Enough is enough.

The thing about Grey Knights is this forum is pretty darn good. Some of the other army forums aren't quite as helpful. So I really enjoy that here. But if I am being 100% honest, the army is narrow in scope (without allying).

For example, with my ultra's I can flyer heavy with variety. I may go with Invis/Centurion build. Or perhaps Grav Bike/ Capt. America. Maybe a simple heavy drop Pod Sternguard list.... etc, etc.

With Grey Knights I feel like the choice I ask myself is.. how many Terminators do I want? Do I take 2 Libbys or 1? Draigo? Or no Draigo.... Much narrower scope.

This isn't horrible. I mean the army is very capable, but at the same time, certainly not easy. Very tricky to use, and quite unforgiving. But still very narrow. We'll see. I haven't decided anything however, I will not be expanding the army beyond what I already own until I decide what to sell off. :)

Those force-weapons look unreal.. are you sure that's painted? Overall a stellar paintjob!

It would be a shame to see you go, especially after the hard work you've put in to cranking out this army and the contributions you've made to the sub-forum. At least get a nice profit, right?

Very nice looking little army you got there mate!

Little? LITTLE?!

lol

You do know nothing the Grey Knights do is 'little' right?

j/k. But it is funny to note the 10 strike/interceptors, 5 Terminators, Libby and 2 Dreadknights is already approximately 1100 pts. Which still blows my mind.

I gotta say though the interceptors have definitely been growing on me as a favorite secondary unit. It feels like everyone is so set on killing Dreadknights and Termies, that these guys kind of go under the radar. Then all the sudden, they teleport up a good 12" , incinerate and hammer something and the opponent realizes this is a real unit that has to be dealt with fast.  I'd like to try 10 in a game.

Hey fellow defenders of all things Imperium,

I actually was at the store today, and did look at the new foam, but I noticed the lighting was so much better, I took new pics of newly completed models. I wanted to keep them in my thread here as my forces grow, hopefully the thread will too!

I intend to go back and do some minor work here and there, but overall I'm really happy with how the first batches of dudesmen have turned out.

Thanks for looking.

I really like the army! :)   I need to just quit Effing about and buy an airbrush because I cannot make my force weapons look anywhere close to what I want.  They are all black right now after many failed attempts.

Good job all around sir everything looks tip-top!

That is an amazing paint job, I wish I had the same painting skill.

That's very nice of you but honestly most of it is nothing more than practice and process... My first figs looked like a child did them. :)

God damn you Prot. I was happy with my GK army, prod I'd got it done so fast... then you had to show your army off. Now I don't want to look at mine lol.

Just when I've started winning with them too :-P

Man, your army looks great! And with winning on the side.... pretty nice.

Thanks! Just trying to pick my next project now!

What have I done?

In an effort to offload stuff from various armies, and fill some holes in my Grey Knights I used a partial credit on this box:

Nemesis Vanguard:

gallery_2760_10611_99802.jpg

- Now before you say, this guy's really lost his mind (which happened about 10 years ago anyway), hear me out: I traded in an item that's already in this box, plus one other thing, and took the discount on the box set as an incentive to buy this BIGGER box with more STUFF! (I am clearly not immune to GW's bundle priced marketing.)

- The beauty of the kits is we can make so much stuff. I realize the Landraider is 'meh' but who doesn't need at least 2 as a center piece for running over daemon corpses on the way to the mess hall after a good daemon roasting?

- What can you build here:

gallery_2760_10611_169295.jpg

- Just look at the back of this box? According to the pictures, I can build anything on Titan short of Malcador's coffin! Just about every combo of our infantry selection is here thanks to mild alterations to the kit/paint jobs.

- This Dreadknight would be my 3rd. Would I ever use it? Probably not in our common games, but in giant battles which we do fairly regularly, or if someone wants to bounce a tournament list off me, I'll be ready. Plus I love the first two I painted, but I'd like to really have a heavily magnetized version. This will be that guy.

- Termies are termies. I could have a million of these guys, and yea, they might die to craftworld throwing star pistols, but hey you can't have everything. The ability to flesh out my paladins as well as termies is a nice option here.

So there you go, I've got some stuff for the ETL here. Just to figure out what to make.

Promethium Relay Pipes:

So what's long, smelly, corroded and burns things like crazy? Nope, not a Nurgle Hot Dog. It's the new Promethium Pipes:

The rules for this unit are in the box actually! Also they are in the (as of this writing) Games Workshop rulebook for Fortifications, 'Stronghold Assault'.

The Promethium pipes come in at just less than a GK terminator and the cover rule has a catch to it. If you make the cover save, there's a 1 in 6 chance some of the Promethium ignites and hits the model (D6 times) that made the save..... Here's the kit:

gallery_2760_10611_190425.jpg

- It's actually not that bad. I assembled this in about 15 minutes, and spent another 15 cleaning it up quickly. It fit together really easily. The first think you notice is this a more.... brittle plastic than we're used to seeing with the more detailed infantry stuff (at least it felt that way.) However it works just fine, the fit is excellent, and the detail is great for a couple of pipes.

- The bags come with long and short sections which are pretty easy to match up, and then there's a pile of round pieces that act as caps or connectors for the various sections. (they can be loosely placed together in a line, or "T" formations depending on the shape you want for your fortification.

I would say the length (I think it was 30") is going to give us a lot of options for spreading out. The points are cheap, but there's no option for Comms or Quad guns.

My intent is to place a Razorback(s) for the 4+ cover, and a Purgator squad in there for some Torrent action. In Maelstrom this will have some fun potential, certainly nothing game breaking.

Thank you very much Valerian... means a lot coming from the ol' wolf! ;)

I really enjoyed the 32 mm look on this army. However as I've noted in other threads, I would not use them on my Ultramarines for an example because I often use larger squads of Ultra's vs Grey Knights.

The thing I notice is they are much harder to fit in some terrain types, and let's say you're doing the 'Rhino Wall' tactic... it's much harder to fit them all behind the rhino now (and to add to that over the years Marines have physically gotten bigger, and more dynamic adding to the issue.)

For purely aesthetic reasons I love them. But for gaming reasons I'd probably be reluctant to use them on something like Tacticals (I was thinking of just using them on Elites and such for Ultra's).

Yeah, I remember your comments about that issue in the other thread.  I'm definitely transitioning base sizes for aesthetics over gaming consequences, for sure.  Because of the improved dynamism of the models, (especially Grey Knights models!) I think the extra base size is well worth it, despite the drawbacks.  Your models just go to show what a difference it makes for those Interceptors, Purifiers, and Strike Knights.

+ Here we have the painful results of my Stormraven. I hope to have better pics up shortly, but here we can see enough to know it's done for ETL 2015!

The doors are magnetized, as are the assault cannons (I haven't magnetized the lascanons but it could easily be done.) So the easiest swap is the 'push fit' Multi-melta to missile launcher if I ever need it.... and the Hurrican Bolters are a quick magnet flip with the normal doors.

It was a lot of hours, and I can't believe I was considering a second one... lol
