Midnightmare
An update of an old tute I did back when I painted my Mephiston (circa 2010): Glowing eyes 'Midnight Style'. A couple of members at my club asked how I did mine so I posted this. It's for psychic effects but can be easily used for marines with lids on, necrons, bionic eyes, laser scopes; anything really. Paints will require updating to the new colours too. Also, apologies for the poor camera work mine doesn’t like being so close:- 1) Paint the eyes white as normal. Do not dot the pupil. http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/hh190/MidnightRunner81/SDC10619-1.jpg 2) Apply very watered down Ice Blue. This will take a few coats, and cover each layer less and less area each time (so you have less on the cheek and more around the eye socket) Note how you can still just about see the eye through the blue. Make sure you don't go above they eye socket too much as it won't look natural. You know, because glowing eyes are natural. http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/hh190/MidnightRunner81/SDC10621-1.jpg http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/hh190/MidnightRunner81/SDC10623.jpg 3) Re-apply the skull white to the eye. Sorted Psi-eyes! http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/hh190/MidnightRunner81/SDC10624.jpg Simples! Psy-eyes with lid on - http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/hh190/MidnightRunner81/3-8.jpg (perhaps a bit too pronounced on the upper part? Doesn't look natural. It is important to make sure you only paint where the light would go. Heavy handed ftw!!) Daemon Prince Eyes/Glowing runes - http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/hh190/MidnightRunner81/1aa.jpg http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/hh190/MidnightRunner81/DSC05462.jpg Bionic Eyes - http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/hh190/MidnightRunner81/DSC00913.jpg http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/hh190/MidnightRunner81/DSC00912.jpg http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/hh190/MidnightRunner81/5ee66d90-c872-4e1b-a187-974d04233905.jpg Black Legion Marine Eyes - http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/hh190/MidnightRunner81/DSC05648.jpg Basically, experiment, yo! I am not the best painter in the world by any stretch but I work with the tools I have and this looks kind of cool, especially from table top distances. Hope it's helpful to you guys and gals Midnight Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/305659-midnight-style-glowing-eyespower-weapons/ Share on other sites
GrandMagnus
Great tutorial! I will be using this for the helmet lenses. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/305659-midnight-style-glowing-eyespower-weapons/#findComment-3999167 Share on other sites
Midnightmare
Cheers! Stoic Raptor
Looks great! The helmet lenses on the jump Librarian would look fine if the effect was removed from the brow surface. It looks fine on the cheeks though. Midnightmare
Thanks guys, glad it can be of some help. You are totally right about the Librarian, Ulfgrim; he is there as an example of how not to do it. Would you believe however, I have never fixed it despite vowing to every time he comes out of my carry case..... Midnightmare
Next up, I have posted elsewhere, but here you go for completeness - Power Weapons Midnight Style Colours used; Skull White, Scorpion Green, Chaos Black. Obviously, for this lil' tute I used an axe, but the same can be said for Thunder Hammers, Power Fists, Power Swords etc..... 1) Block in the areas of colour. The idea is when the weapon is switched off, the blade is black. When it is on (as all marines should do in a fight!) the the hottest part, ie the white part, is at the centre (axe) or base of the blade (sword/lightning claws), the majority of the blade is green, with the tip black. Thats how I imagine it any way! Picture:- http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/hh190/MidnightRunner81/1a.jpg 2) Blend the white to green, the green to black, keeping the paint thin (a golden rule which I tend to forget). As the blade is small, you won't need too many stages (more talented and patient people than me would though ) :- http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/hh190/MidnightRunner81/1b.jpg 3) Edge highlight the black with green, the green with white, blending as necessary. Paint the lightning in green over the black areas. The idea is that you go thinner with each colour leaving the previous on showing:- http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/hh190/MidnightRunner81/1c.jpg 4) Paint lightning over the green areas with a 1:1 Skull White:Scorpion Green, and over the pure Scorpion Green lightning:- http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/hh190/MidnightRunner81/1d.jpg 5) Paint in the pure Skull White lightning. It is important for it to appear to originate from the power cell discharger/base of blade. Make sure you don't go to mad with the lightning as it won't look like lightning. Add in OSL to suit; a lot of people use airbrushes for this and it generally looks better but I would be too scared - so I dry(ish) brush the raised areas the light would fall on with progressevly lighter colours. Piccy:- http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/hh190/MidnightRunner81/1e.jpg Here you go, all done:- http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/hh190/MidnightRunner81/1g.jpg http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/hh190/MidnightRunner81/1h.jpg Looks great on the table top, obviously you can sub green in for other colours; Orange - http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/hh190/MidnightRunner81/Mobile%20Uploads/image_67.jpeg Red - http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/hh190/MidnightRunner81/Mobile%20Uploads/image_32.jpeg Cheers Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/305659-midnight-style-glowing-eyespower-weapons/#findComment-4192465 Share on other sites
GrandMagnus
That's a great tutorial midnight! Personally I prefer metallic power weapons, but it is useful for other things.
