Transporting paints in airplane luggage

Recommended Posts

Anybody have experience transporting paints in check in airplane luggage? Have moved to the States from Singapore and want to get back into the hobby after taking a break to make the move.

I've got a decent collection of paint bottles left in storage there and wouldn't mind bringing them over the next time I go back to visit. I've taken some closed Vallejo bottles on board before with no problems but opened dropper bottles are new territory. The citadel pots make me the most nervous however.

Obviously zip locking them and some cellotape to seal them shut should do the trick, but am still concerned about the pressure changes or rough handling causing them to burst. Anyone done this kind of move before? I think I have about 30 bottles in total.

Thanks!

I had a little hard shell hobby box that I put my paints, brushes, models, etc... I put that in my checked luggage to no ill effects and they weren't in a bag. They were also Vallejo paints.

If your luggage has reinforced sides, then you should be okay. If not, put them between layers of laundry to give them cushioning.

I usually get by with double-bagging, but only put paints in the bag - I once made the mistake of putting some greenstuff in the same bag as the paints, a jar popped open from pressure change and soaked it in Ice Blue.
