Command Squad Vs Vanguard Vets

So, I'm putting together a "pure" BA list for casual gameplay, and wanted some input on the best unit to escort a non-special character captain.

Said captain will have at the least, artificier armor, Valours Edge, jump pack, and digital weapons. Haven't decided on pistol as of yet.

Vanguard are fluffy, and pack a punch, even naked, that assault marines lack, and since assault marines are now FA instead of troops, was thinking they would make a decent replacement.

Command Squad is also fluffy to escort a captain, they have the problem of being limited to 5 guys, 2 of which have set loadouts, but you do get FNP for the unit, and the champion isn't bad.

So basically, which is better? 5 guys with fnp or a slightly bigger squad of vanguard without fnp?

Honor guard are perfect as bodyguards for a HQ, and especially for a captain, I run mine vanilla just for the FNP, and the champion to take a challenge so my captain can smash everything else.

Vanguard Vets are great, but they are really good with force multipliers like chaplains, priests, and librarians.

That's how I use mine, anyway.

I've gotten great mileage out of my command squad (honor guard in BA fluff). With my Captain they have usually performed well. Hits hard, flexible, and resilient with FNP. I usually run them every match.

I have 0 experience running Vanguard Vets .... but a couple of our new formations use them and they are actually the next addition I want to make to my Blood Angels force.

Has anyone ran a command squad with 3x melta and 3x SS with any success?

Not personally but there was a few people saying they had success with this and Mephiston. They pod in and he tanked the small arms and they tank the AP2. FNP helps both too. Next turn they can all charge a big target with the champ eating potential challenges or Mephiston can break off and go after something he'll massacre.
