Surf's up! - diorama completed...comp. won!

Whilst my soul belongs to Chaos for the current ETL (and there's about a 33% chance next year too, but that's another matter...) I have entered Warhammer Harajuku's painting contest with my Kierdale's World Leman Russ Punisher.
Now, Warhammer Harajuku (formerly GW Nakano) has a seasonal painting comp with three or four categories. Always Single, Large and Squad...and for this summer's competition the 4th category is 'Summer'...

I searched my bitz box and have quickly (as it's just for fun) put together a little diorama:
Two Catachan jungle fighters on R&R leave on a beach.
One is running into the sea with a surfboard over his shoulder, the other doing 'suika-wari' (in Japan they like to have beach parties, put a water melon on the ground, blindfold a member, give them a bat and they have to find and break the melon)...with a chainsword.
Also: sandcastle and entrenching tool, crates of beer and ammo.

WIP images later this week. smile.png

EDIT: the deadline is the 30th of August so I've got a bit of time smile.png

Shades of CHina beach. Sounds great.

Exactly. :)

And, WarriorFish, they do wash the sand off and then eat the watermelon :)

It's been a busy week so I have little to show, but here is how things are so far:

The chainsword-wielder had the grenade in his hand smoothed and the top flattened and drilled so it can be painted up like a can of beer. I'll make some more from rounded sprue to scatter about. A blindfold will be GS'd onto him.

I may have him accidentally about to swing the chainsword down onto a pile of grenades just next to the watermelon. There'll be ammo and crates here and there too.

Damn that Catachan grenade-arm is an ugly thing!

That's good to know, nobody likes wasted food :P I knew this was going to be good, but it's looking great already! Do you have the Catachan CCS box? It has a lot of cool bits and more important much better scaled/sculpted ones. You might be able to use one of those arms in place of the grenade one?

I do have the Catachan command squad but as this is just a 'for fun' project (not that I don't want to win :D) I don't want to use up good bitz. Hence that horrible arm is 'alright'.

I bought the base today: 15cm x 15cm...but since the edge is beveled it's more like 13x13. Not too big as I don't want to tempt myself and add more and more (e.g. a BBQ!).

Indeed he does not.

The camo was:

Ushtabi Bone drybrushed with white, then shaded with Gryphon Sepia.

The brown areas are Gorthor Brown highlighted and edged with a mix of Gorthor and white.

The dots were a mix of Ushtabi Bone and white, with black added to some sides with a micro fine pen.

Thanks for the suggestion, Walter but while I'd like to add more, and I probably have time, this diorama's pretty much just for fun and I don't want to use up too many bitz, so I'm sticking with just the two guardsmen.

Likely I'll entitle it "R&R" (with Jpnz translation beneath) as "China Beach" or "Charlie don't surf" would take too much explaining (though adding some staked severed heads with signs saying "Charlie" underneath them is tempting).

To go full on American themed (as the Catachan so very much are), you need an oil drum with a stand, chimney, and handle, and cut in half. That should be your improvised smoker for all the grilling out goodness. Then you can imagine a good ol' North Carolina pig pickin.

Nothing beats putting a half hog on the pit, dressed up in a dry rub, and cooking it low and slow for 6 hours; except maybe doing so with your best buds, a cooler full of brews, and the beach. Maybe you could make up something to look like a boil pot, that could be full of seafood. Boiled redskin potatoes, crab, shrimp, corn, and enduille, maybe some boudin, crawfish, and steamed oysters, all boiled in cajun spices.

Man I'm hungry. There are some additions you could make if you have some spare bits for them laying around, or something you could make pretty easily.

I'm looking forward to seeing this completed. You could maybe have some guys splitting up the watermelon that the one guy is trying to smash.

It's a popular scene from many anime, but I don't get it. Watermelons are fer eatin, and when they get overripe, they make great targets fer shootin, cuz they 'splode real good.

Just my 2 cents.

Alrightalright!

I added a BBQ. Half a tank, I-beam plasticard, charcoal chips (how's that for authenticity?) and a mesh top.

Still to do:

Green stuff: one full watermelon, one already cut, meat for the BBQ, sandcastle (to then be covered in sand).

Paint bitz (crates, grenades, canteens, entrenching tool).

Paint the beach. Perhaps add leaves at the top end.

Add water effects. Perhaps stipple on some white as foam.

Title card.

Win comp.

Sounds good to me, as for the last thing to do you've already found your winning ways so I'm sure that will be no problem. Plus you have recently added to your collection of prizes, surely the best of all? msn-wink.gif

Thank you!

A most unexpected honour!

Some progress to show:

How the beach currently looks

Sand castle Bastion and a bit of wall. The sea will be coming up this far, hence the wall is falling apart.

Surfer. Working on his board now.

I'll be adding some fuel leaking from that tank on the sand, and tall grass along the back of the beach (to the left in the above pic). Also need to add beer cans and other scattered gear.

Drunk fool about to cut water melon.

med_gallery_63428_7083_41318.jpg

Currently painting one full watermelon to put in front of him (I've gone off the idea of him being about to accidentally cleave into some grenades), and one already cut water melon off to one side.

Oh...and still have to add the sea :D

The detail is amazing! The sand castle, the BBQ... fantastic! Is that clever use of a tank trap too? If you don't win with this I'll personally come and BBQ the judges! laugh.png I do a mean BBQ too, last one we had down the beach I happened to pass a stall selling watermelons and I was sorely tempted thanks to this... tongue.png

Looking good Kier! Regional variations are great. Here in the Southeast US, we call it a cook out, as BBQ refers to a specific style of cooking (Slow cooked seasoned meats, usually in a smoker or over a pit). Where I grew up it specifically refers to pork, mostly of the pulled variety. Man, I really want barbecue now...

Anyway, I like the work you've done on this. I'd be curious to see the other submissions. I know what Americans tend to do at the beach, I have no idea what other cultures do (for some reason I tend only to think of the Mediterranean as having proper beaches, I tend to think of the seaside in northern Europe being like the coast in Maine, cold and rocky, feel free to correct me if I'm wrong). I know Okinawa has some nice beaches, but I've never been there (not for lack of trying).

When the contest happens, would you mind taking pictures (if you can) of the other entries? I think we'd all love to see what's competing against you.
