Ultramar's Photo Album

Is it all right if I'm not 100% consistent with Ultramarine markings? I hate yellow so I'm going to give mine all gold trim and make them from the 2nd Company. The rest I am confused on as I can not find a guide to proper squad markings. Do helmets and trim have to be painted according to their tactical role designation like Assault or Devestator? If so can I cheat and just paint the helmets their appropriate colors? I think the shoulder trim being Blue or Green on Ultramarine blue looks really tacky.

Gold is the "new" way of painting the 2nd Company's yellow trim, so that is perfectly fine.

You can find a good primer on Codex squad markings not too far away:

The Ultras do not paint helmets by type of squad like the Blood Angels do. In our Chapter it's a mark of rank. So troopers have blue helmets, sergeants have red helmets, veterans have white helmets, veteran sergeants have red helmets with either a white stripe or a green laurel. Captains/Masters wear whatever color helmet they want, but gold is the usual color.

As the Insignium Astartes tells us, variant marking are fairly common and perfectly all right.

Technically that'd be white laurels since that is the Veteran color and green/gold laurels denote Standard Bearer or Ancient.

This is my collection - 3000 points - almost legal, the preds push it over the 3 heavy support allowed -

Maybe so, that the pred's push it over the allowed three heavy support units

But looks look for a medium sized Appocolypse battle

As, anything goes in that pretty much

Our store had one other day

WAS HUGE!!!

But out numbered

Could of done with your 3k points for the Imperium side

:-P

But getting back to the point of this board

Great paint job, really do like it

Just wodnering where you got, or how you made, the large 'shield-crests' for the assualt dread?

Always wondered

As they add somerthing to the model, not sure what, but they add something

Seahawk is almost right - its the right shield -but I made that symbol out of an old ID work card (much like a credit card but softer plastic and no bumpy numbers) - I made this guy along long time ago - (he is the lead fell handed dread) - I have his arm painted up aswell - see if I can get a pic of it... He has alot of chips and dints though... adds character..

The most important part of free hand painting and/building the 'U' is getting the centre of it as round as possible - if you can get the inside round - it will almost alywas look good - to do that symbol I used a hole punch - made the hole - (nice and round) and then with a pen drew the symbol and then cut it out with a sharp sharp hobby knife around the hole.. same process with the symbol on top although I trimmed it and put the skull and wreath inbetween it - (from the OLD terminator chaplain banner pole)

Alternatively - the Brass symbols would be a good idea - I did this guy way before I got the etchings...

Are that sternguards? or just normal marines? cause the bolters look like sternguards but the colors says 2nd company

just normal marines, i like the look of the bolters over standard ones so my whole army will have them

There are so many great painters on this forum! I almost can't believe it ;) !

I will also put some pics of my Ultramarines here, but I'll need a photocamera first (my old one is broken...).

Does someone have an idea what specifications my camera will need so I can make nice clear pics of my miniatures?

NIce -

A little tip when doing litanies... instead of doing your brush strokes like this --------- which ends up loking more like a wave line rather than writing - try doing your strokes like this ||||||||||

try and get them similar in length but its not important and it will look more like writing rather than a squiggly line... just dont make them too big -

In case you missed the post in the News-Rumors subforum, the Gallery has been updated with a subgallery for each of the original 18 Legions:

=][= NEW CHAPTER GALLERIES

In order to help people that are new to Space Marines and to also help cut down on the excessive amount of "Post your...." threads that are cropping up lately, we've opened up Chapter specific galleries at the B&C.

Since one of the main ideas is to help new players figure out how the Chapters are supposed to be painted, I would suggest we limit ourselves - at least at first - to "Codex-compliant" miniatures. Perhaps one sub-sub Gallery for each company (two for the 2nd).

I've gone ahead and started with some of my models that are old-school 2nd company.

You can see our Gallery here:

Ultramarines Chapter Gallery

I look forward to seeing everybody's minis there.

Nice work brother -

Did you try out the verticle stokes for litanies? It kinda looks like it on the jump pack guy but either the pics are a little blurry or I need glasses...

Try hitting the red on the purity seals with a bit of brown ink... they dont really have any contrast and stand out more than they should... maybe its just my eyes but the rest of the model has highlights where as they dont seem to... instead of making them brighter, I would shade them down, brown ink would do the job quick and easy...

I indeed used the verticale strokes for the litanies on that Assault Marine and it's true that the pic is kinda blurry...

I guess you're right about the red. I'll put some brown ink on it when I've got some time...

However I don't think I've made any wrong highlights. The only parts highlighted are his rightarm, breastplate, head and the top of the jump pack... But I still need to work with shades; I don't do that al to often <_<

Thanks for your comment

no no - your highlighting is all good - I was just saying that the blue is highlighted whereas the red isnt - it makes the red look more flat than what it would normally and it really stands out - I think that shading the red down with an ink would be better than highlighting it up as it would then stand out even more -

The verticle lines look better in life?
