something else that I noticed when I magnified your pics - The terminator sergeant - the writing on his banner - its alittle jumbled and not evenly spaced - I know that forming letters with a brush is a pain.. I struggle with it myself - what I do to make it that little bit easier is to get a really soft pencil (4B) but make sure its super sharpe and pencil on the letters ever so lightly just to give you a form to follow with the brush... I tried the drawing on with a fine fine pen - which does work - but the fine pen slides alot easier on a model than it does on paper and if you are not careful it looks just as messy... also - to avoid getting jumbled and running out of space - start from the middle and write outwards - so you would write the letters in this order - starting from the centre line - P - R - U - E - S - N - that way the centre of the word is in the centre of the banner work and you only have to space out 2 other letters instead of judging the spacing for the whole 6...

Your highlighting is good - the lines are consistantly the same thickness which is the major difficulty in highlighting (besides picking the right tone!) but do you think you could try some black lining? it will make more of your subtle highlights stand out - make your black lining more predominate the lower you go on the model... it will help with the lack of the detail work on the legs... what you have is fine though, I just feel that this would be a good next step for you... your highlighting is good - next is shading and the easiest is black lining...

Okay I shaded the red down by using some water-downed graveyard earth(, I don't have any inks yet, so I need to work with water-downed paints to shade...) and it looks a better than before.

The vertical lines didn't go that well. According to me, they are to big. However, it doesn't really catch the eye, because of the brown I put on it to let it look like old parchment (or something like that), so it ain't that bad. I've just got to practice a bit more ^_^ .

Your trick to paint letters is really a good find. I'll give it a try when I have to write something on banners or so.

Thank you for your compliment on my highlighting ^_^ . I appreciate it :) .

I just wondered: "What's black lining?" I haven't heard this term yet in my 40K-career so if you would like to explain it to me

Yeah, A bit of practice... the one on the sword hand looks the best - http://i362.photobucket.com/albums/oo62/Chaplian_Silkor/100_0044-1.jpg

black lining is litterally the opposite of highlighting... instead of using a light colour on the edges (highlights) you use a dark colour and paint in the recesses... normally black or close to it...

my own models as an example -

http://i347.photobucket.com/albums/p449/brother_tual/IMGP0621.jpg

notice the black lines in the armour cracks and joints?

Black lining can be doone a number of ways... you can paint your model blue - then black line - then highlight -

I however do my black lining last and touch up the highlights and the black lining at the same time... i always make mistakes...

Its not really stand out in this pic, but the assault marines have little highlighting on the legs, The contrast comes from shading as I want to dust up the model alittle -

but on the shrike model notice the thicker lines lower on his body legs and underside? same with tiggy under the arms? and the termy in the background? the contrast in the white comes from black lining... there is no highlighting on that white..

Ok, heres some of my Ultramarines. I haven't painted any 4th company (or any Ultramarines) since 2005 when I quit and started IH. Enjoy <_< .

firstly, my version of Captain Uriel Ventris. Can you guess who and what I made him from? :tu:

Secondly, my rendition of myself. Use from a thunderfire gunner.

Rest of the command squad

I'd just like to say that I've never uploaded stuff onto here before so if this goes wrong, theres always my (random) photobucket account (please ignore the FoW tanks and my school DT project radio-train...unless you really want to look at them.)

C&C welcome (and needed)

Thanks,

@ ServanoTomasin:

your UMs are looking good, But I think the banner still needs some work.

@ Thantoes:

Awesome mini's you've got there. I almost can't say anything bad about them.

However I have my doubts about your Venerable Dreadnaught. I like the work with storm shields and the customised AC, but your model is too... gold. I would've put some white on it...

But hey, that's just my opinion ;)

his gold is too yellow... tone it down or up.. it needs contrast..

I dont have the best gold but I like mine to look HARD (like gold plated) not soft (like jewelery - 18 ct) but that is just me...

Maybe hit it with a light highlight of chainmail or silver just to give it a 'shinny' look... ?? do it the same as if you were doing a normal highligh, just really fine...

Its not gold, its actually dwarf bronze. But you are right. I am going to go back and do some work on it at some stage but I have so many other things to do/paint at the moment B)

That's a very nice dark blue variant to the normal Ultramarines' color. I like it.

Lots of very nice little touches, specially on the Sergeant.

I'm not sure about the shield codpiece on the second assault trooper though.

I use a fairly basic Kodak CX6445, nothing special and fairly old.

i have a light box, a couple of strong lamps and a tripod, when i take pics i set the exposure compensation to 1.5 aswell(sometimes called the white balance)

hope that helps

James

lovely marines as ever, spikyjames.

How many marines have got by now(, painted like that)?

Could you post a pic with all your Ultramarines?

Do you also have marines of other chapters?

Well that's it for my questions ;)

Keep up your great work, brother

Very nice Sternguard/Veterans, spikyjames.

The snow is maybe a little too snow-y, and not melted/muddied/bloodied enough for my tastes, just to pick at nits.

Also, the Veteran Sergeant has no skunk stripe, nor a white laurel on his helmet. Again, another nit pick.

The gold rims on the Combi-Melta guy do not bother me, although maybe he should have more Purity Seals or other iconography to show why he is allowed to wear gold rims. Iron Halo, Marksman's Honour, more Purity Seals, etc. It's maybe a little too random just to have a gold rims guy without a story behind him.

Pretty awesome work, though.
