Possible to magnetize pintle weapons?

Recommended Posts

I did some googling last night, but was unable to find anything useful on this topic.

Has anyone successfully magnetized the storm bolter / heavy stubber pintle guns?

First problem I noticed was the guns only come with one set of handles... so one gun will end up w no controls.

I thought of just assembling the heavy stubber and maybe magnetizing the spot it attaches to the turret, but that mounting spot is very small/awkward.

Worst case I'll just model the turret w the stubber because I think it looks awesome.  If I don't buy the upgrade I'll just tell the opponent the Chimera has no pintle gun.

I am a little short of photos so most of his will be verbal... be warned it is a little fiddly.

You are going to need 3 x 2mm magnets

1. Cut off the right hand pin from the bracket as shown in the photo below and drill out a shallow, 2mm diameter recess and glue in a 2 x 1.5mm magnet

2. On the Stubber, where the pin for the bracket would normally fit, drill out the recess to 2mm diameter but not all the way through and glue in a 2 x 1.5mm magnet making sure to check the polarity with the one fitted on the bracket.

3. Glue the ammo container onto the stubber. You may need to trim later depending on how accurate your drilling was.

4. Drill out the recess on the right hand storm bolter and glue in a 2 x 1.5mm magnet again checking the polarity on the bracket.

5. On the left hand storm bolter, open up the recess at the bottom to create a U shape to allow the pin on the bracket to slide in from underneath.

6. Glue the right and left hand storm bolters together and when dry trim to fit.

7. Sit back and open a recaf and a ration pack with the satisfaction of a job well done smile.png

I got pics taken, got my pintle guns ready!

I can post these up in the magnetization thread, or if you want you can write it up using the pics.

I botched the first one I tried... somehow I got my left and right confused and cut wrong peg off the the mount.

I'll have to get another one next ebay bits buying spree :)

Do a write up here so we can get the layout to match and edit as required before adding it to the magnetisation thread.

1) Material used:

Citadel Drill
Lasgun Bit
Bolter Bit
Super Glue
Sprue Cutters
Xacto Knife (not pictured)
3 - 2mm x 1mm magnets

Pintle gun bits

2) Snip right side post from pintle mount

3) Make a guide hole with the tip of xacto knife
Use lasgun bit to drill guide hole

4) Expand the hole with boltgun bit

med_gallery_85038_10914_37596.jpg

5) Get your stuff ready to insert magnet
I like to put the magnet on the back side of a drill bit to guide it into place

The direction you set this magnet will determine polarity for the rest of the build
Put a drop of glue into the hole, push the magnet into the hole

6) Magnet inserted
Forgive the slightly blurry pic

7) Use boltgun bit to expand stubber's mounting hole
Very little, if any drilling is needed at this step
(I made a mistake here, made the hole a bit wider than it needed to be)

8) Glue stubber magnet into place
IMPORTANT: Check polarity with the mount in step 6 first

9) Glue stubber ammo box into place

med_gallery_85038_10914_44746.jpg

10) Use boltgun drill to expand storm bolter mounting hole
There is very little drilling if any required at this step

med_gallery_85038_10914_10936.jpg

11) Glue stormbolter magnet into place
IMPORTANT: This needs to be same polarity alignment as the stubber

med_gallery_85038_10914_114593.jpg

12) Cut the bottom out of the left storm bolter's mounting hole
Then, glue both sides of the bolter together

13) Enjoy your magnetized pintle guns!
