j31c3n
At the behest of some friends of mine, I'm going to be chronicling the modelling adventures of my updated marines force. Short background: I've been playing since 3rd but have only recently really buckled down and really gave modelling my all. My general intent is to reduce the amount of iconography on a given model, while also loading each of them up with all the little bits of kit you'd expect a power-armored boy scout to need on a brief deployment. With that in mind, I'm trying to do some moderate conversion work on just about every marine in my collection, keeping it to plasticard, filing, and so on. I've never had the gift of Green Stuff. My particular chapter has a very in-progress IA posting in the Liber Astartes on this very site if you're interested in the fluff side of things.Without further babble, here's some very WIP techmarines:http://i.imgur.com/UL7t8uz.jpg I used a single Finecast techmarine model (the one that comes in the box with 4 servitors) to create the two of these guys. It was an exercise in patience to saw all the pieces apart and then re-assemble them in the way I wanted them. Per the fluff of my chapter, each of these guys are going to have Terminator Honors displayed on one pauldron and (when they arrive in the mail) a Deathwatch insignia on the other. That's why they're each missing the left pauldron. http://i.imgur.com/BbgKYJS.jpg They've each got all their guns mounted on servo-arms rather than holding them by hand. I figured Techmarines would have more important things to worry about on the battlefield than laying down fire, and could trust that to a Machine Spirit's targetting algorithm. The model on the left has a bit of a mismatched leg taken from the Necron Lord packaged with a Doomsday Ark. I figure he hobbles a little. http://i.imgur.com/1VNblNN.jpg If you're wondering, those are Volkite calivers from Forge World's Heresy series. I wanted a way for my marines to really pop on the battlefield and I have played them as shooty since my 3rd edition Salamanders army. After many alternatives, I eventually settled on the Volkite weapons because I like the idea of heat rays. On the tabletop, of course, they're counts-as boltguns with a little bit of fluff about jury-rigged power cells not packing the punch of the originals. http://i.imgur.com/1CXnmbu.jpg Each model is equipped with a combi-melta that I've represented with the two servo-arm mounted guns as well as an auspex. The sword is just for show, because I knew I'd never actually equip a sergeant with such a cool bit from the Sternguard kit - since I eschew the assault phase. From this angle you can see some icongraphy on the chestplate of the Techmarine on the right - that will be filed away at a later date. My marines don't have time to waste on that kind of ostentatious display. j31c3n
On to the sergeants, I suppose. These are a little more WIP and are gonna require a little more filing and carving than most of what I'm working on. http://i.imgur.com/v1sPNqc.jpg The model on the left is made with some "reclaimed" bits. Some of his pieces date from a 3rd edition sergeant that once swept an entire squadron of Dark Eldar Warriors all on his lonesome with nothing but his trusty chainsword. He might need a little more time in a bath of Simple Green. I believe the long "scroll" looking piece is from a 4th edition-era Ravenwing upgrade sprue. That piece along with the helmet, torso, legs, and backpack are from the original model I put together in high school. I couldn't bring myself to discard them, hence the effort to strip the paint. He used to be a Salamander! http://i.imgur.com/tNX1n6x.jpg For the right sergeant I was trying to create the most high action pose I could with the bits I had available at the time. I think I did a fairly good job - throwing a grenade is pretty awesome, especially in a shooty army like mine - no chainsword vignettes allowed! I'm particularly pleased with his little wrist-mounted melta device. It's the combiweapon portion of a combi-melta. The first step to veteran status in my chapter is assuming the maintenence and fabrication of your own wargear, and most opt to prove their mastery by constructing a one-use-per-powerpack plasma, melta, graviton, or flame weapon using parts from the chapter's stores of salvage and ruined wargear. For the sake of using awesome bits, I decided to construct it from a meltagun and an Angelus boltgun from the BA Sanguinary Guard sprue. (Originally I was going to use the inferno pistol bit from the same box, but I accidentally ruined it and was forced to improvise. I'm happier with my improvisation than I would have been with the production bit.) http://i.imgur.com/cdQASDB.jpg For the chain holding the right sergeant's Volkite caliver, I actually used a found jewelry chain from my wife's jewelry kit (with permission, of course! My wife, among her many hobbies, creates her own jewelry pieces). I'm going to use another length of the same chain for the other sergeant's weapon. With luck, I can get it to hang freely after painting it. I'll have to file away the BA insignia on the soles of his boots and replace it with a more standard tread, I actually just noticed that now. http://i.imgur.com/PHNWWRS.jpg Here you can see some of the detail on the melta devices. Some greenstuff paint will be required to fill in some of the gaps between the wires and the forearm armor. These models are also missing their final left shoulderpads, though for the right sergeant I placed a pauldron from a box of Blood Claws to ensure that his weapon's sling wouldn't obstruct the final Deathwatch pad. Nice Kit-bash look forward to seeing more. Thanks! Fire Golem
The scroll/loincloth thing looks a bit long, but everything looks really cool. Are the Volkites going to count as plasma guns? Res Ipsa Loquitur
As matter of semantics, if they're restricted to minimum iconography how are they unfettered?
