I've fallen into the same problem as a lot of other gamers... there are so many armies I'd like to build and no way to afford them all. Thus, I got to thinking about having one army I can use for any situation - Alpha Legion. I can use them for 40k or heresy, or play traitor or loyalist, all by just shuffling a couple units around.

Awesome! They do fit the bill for almost any astartes army. Plus, I am sure many legions, chapters, and warbands are just Alpha Legionnaires in different colors

 

Also, how did you do the metallic paint? I like the way it came out.

The effect was done thus:

1 - airbrush 1:1 boltgun metal and chain mail

2 - airbrush a light layer of mithril silver straight down from overhead

3 - airbrush 2-3 light layers of 3:1 Tamiya clear blue and clear green

4 - thin Tamiya clear green to a glaze and touch up the topmost parts where the most light will hit

5 - thin Tamiya clear blue to a glaze and touch up the lowest parts where there would be more shadows

 

I'm sure some people could airbrush steps 4-5, but my airbrush is a siphon feed so it needs too much psi to do tiny details like that.

They are Hydra Knight and Shadow Knight from Kabuki miniatures. I'm not sure if their scale is right, as they are twice the size of the marines.

UPDATE TIME

 

After taking a break from GW stuff and getting hopelessly pulled into Kingdom Death, I have gotten back to work on power armor. I have a new digital camera that shows my painting skills (and mistakes) a LOT better than my old POS. I've also found a better way of painting AL armor that is quicker and I think looks 5x better. The primarch(s) are still the previous Tamiya scheme, while the rest use my new scheme.

Using an airbrush I base it with Vallejo Air Steel over black primer, then cover it with 1:1 mix of Createx Pearlized Blue / Createx Iridescent Green, then I do a zenithial highlight of 3:2 mix as above.

It's been a year since I updated this, but with the new pledge thingie going on I guess it's time to polish some scales. I have both of the HH boxes to really get into, as well as some extras. My current planned army list is thus:

10x Mk IV assault (2x plasma pistol, sgt with plasma pistol and thunder hammer)

10x Mk IV tactical (comms, vexille)

20x Mk III tactical (comms, vexille, sgt with power sword and combi-melta)

5x Mk IV recon (sniper)

5x Mk IV heavy (heavy flamer)

6x Mk IV heavy (heavy bolter)

First half of a Mk III heavy support squad with volkite culiverns. The guns didn't fit perfectly into the Mk III right arm because of the flared vambraces so I will have to putty a little. I'm not looking forward to heating and shaping the cables...

Laernan terminator squad primed and ready for paint. I had to cut the hands off the volkite chargers because the PA hands are too small for terminators, then cut the hands off the combi-bolters and swap hands.
