march10k
JMHO, but...if looking down at a flier, it should match the terrain below...if looking up, it should match the sky...so get creative...if the world is airless...the underside should be jet black, if the atmosphere is earth-like, blue, but why not violet to represent a non-earth-like chemistry in the atmosphere? Similarly, on earth, you'd want a blue-gray over ocean, but some kind of green over forest and brown-yellow over plains...but on an alien world? Why not blue plains or orange trees? You can't really go wrong in sci-fi!!!

That's why I did my aircraft in grey, because really the only thing you can do is try to make them harder to see...
Captain Caine 24th
I've just primed my new vulture dark grey and have been contemplating a different paint scheme myself. My absolute favorite schemes are from Imperial armour masterclass vol 1& 2. I went with a snow camo for my tempestus and matched the camo for their valkyries. The airbrush is really great for the color gradation but I suspect it's possible to do it with a brush and some flo-aid. Otherwise taping the line off and going dark grey on top and light grey on the bottom might work too. I use vallejo model air USAF dark grey, and I find it's fairly close to Eshin grey (which I use with a sponge for weathering). Administratum grey might work for the bottom, or dawnstone maybe. Do you have a smaller model to practice the camo on? From a realism standpoint I've never cared for the addition of a colored stripe, red or whatever, across the cockpit or wings. But, for the sake of presentation I think it really adds another layer to the paint job and helps it standout. World War II decals on eBay are amazing. You can find full pinup girls, or whatever numbers & symbols you might need to coordinate better with your camo scheme. I always thought the pinup girls would go great with an all green camo and a catachan army.
Lucien Eilam
You'd think that, but the fact is, airplanes just move too dang fast for camo to be effective. RAF ground-matching topside camo in WWII was more about concealing them from the air when parked at airfields than in flight.
WarriorFish
My preference is always for what looks coolest. Never forget the most important and powerful rule in 40k is the Rule of Cool ;)
Jolemai
Well, if Flyer camouflage isn't that popular here, how are you all painting yours? So... when do we see this Marauder of yours Jolemai? It's one of a number of options and if this one wins, I need it painted by February so theoretically, you would see a log of it later in the year. If it loses out to something else, then maybe next year :)
Ceddyn
Well, if Flyer camouflage isn't that popular here, how are you all painting yours? If I ever get to painting mine I'm using the same camo as my tanks (dark grey / ochre stripes) on the topside to keep them in line with the rest of the vehicles. I'll probably do the bottom light grey.
CoffeeGrunt
Mine just get the same stylised desert camo my tanks and other vehicles do, with an occasional white, "belly."
Ulrik_Ironfist
Well, if Flyer camouflage isn't that popular here, how are you all painting yours? My flyers get painted in low vis grey, but I weather the paint a bit, so some have green showing through, others have tan.
Vel'Cona
I countershade my flyers like a shark. Light grey/white belly, dark grey/blue top. It works reasonably well and avoids the mono-color pitfalls.
WarriorFish
Mine are are the same as the ground vehicles as I have them as regiment aligned rather than identifying as Navy.
Dantay VI
I do the same as Vel'Cona, only mine are legion vehicles, so the colour is kinda pre-selected :)
Quneitra
I dunno if this is what you're looking for, but here's the Syrian Su-24 (ground attack plane) camo scheme, that I plan on using in my Tallarn army: http://theaviationist.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/11/Syrian-Su-24.jpg The intentional blurriness is a bit of a pain in the arse, so here's a drawing of that plane. Its basic sky blue underneath, with the very top painted brown and khaki and the radome white. I feel like that could work on multiple worlds, though depending on where you envision your guys fighting, that can be easily changed.
elmo
I went for this pattern on my Valkyrie... the upper surfaces are the same pattern as my vehicles and the underside is light grey. At the end, have a look at as many examples of aircraft camouflage, pick one you like and go for it ;) http://pre13.deviantart.net/6b0e/th/pre/f/2014/248/e/d/_812____aces_high__by_elmo9141-d7y1e67.jpg
