Myself and Alpharius came with an idea for a piece of wargear we thought all BoL legions could use: Burning Volkites. I'll start with the fluff and those of you who don't want to read that can just skip to the rules.

The burning pattern volkite was first manufactured on the Forgeworld of Hyrakan. Many believe weapons design to have been created by Dear'dd, primarch of the Iron Bears. While at first only small numbers of Burning Volkites were produced, its armour piercing capabilities were much in demand amongst the legiones astartes. Soon, all manufactorums on Hyrakan had been turned over to the mass production of Burning Volkites. While this satisfied the Legions need for the weapon, the mass produced model had faults which occasionaly caused the gun to overheat, wounding or sometimes even killing the user. Despite this, the weapon was still favoured by some legions over bolters where possible. Of particular note were the III legion who equipped their elite Toxotai veterans with burning volkites whenever possible. While the mechanicum did begin to try and root out the faults in the weapon, before their work was complete Icarion and more than half the legions rose up in rebellion. Heavy losses suffered by loyalists in the early stages of this conflict meant that Hyrakan was soon required to transfer production to astartes weapons and armour to re equip those legions loyal to the Emperor.

Rules:

Burning Volkite. R"9 S5 AP3 Gets hot!, deflegrate. Costs +12 points to upgrade a legion praetor, centurion, sergeant or support marine with a burning volkite.

Edited by Sigismund229

That's the caliver. We wanted to compensate for AP3 and deflegrate by giving it a shorter range than normal. I believe Alpharius and I agreed the culverin is R"12

Thats a bit iffy then since, unless they're all Assault Weapons, the Lower Ap and Range dont make up for 45" Threat Range on Culverins :p

One thing I'd like to know about our eighteen legions would be their color schemes. That's something not really important story-wise, but it really helps visualize the legions.

Mine is in my thread if you'd like to know (Still pretty WIP)

Ok here we go found it

Serpenta R"8 S5 AP3 gets hot, deflegrate, pistol

Charger R"13 S5 AP3 gets hot, deflegrate, assault 2

Caliver R"26 S6 AP3 gets hot, deflegrate, heavy 2

Culverin R"40 S6 AP3 gets hot, deflegrate, heavy 4

Satisfied slips? :smile.:

Yes :tongue.:

My own thread has 2 Color samples for my own Legion.

In essence: Mother-Of-Pearl and MEtallic Wine Red.

Well that took a while to read through and leaves me disappointed at the garbage some professionals turn out for 40k.

Once I have more time and have had a chance to think things over I will give more feedback.

The Grave Stalkers are primarily a pale grey that blends into mists/fog with bone as a secondary and their lenses are a pure black.Something like this:

I would've loved to use army painter to get a scheme for my Marines. Problem is, they ended up looking like White Scars due to the programs limitations :P

...Maybe when I finally buy interference/Opalescent paints will I paint up a Model in that scheme...

..one day.

I'm not really sure of the name, wouldn't Hyrakan-pattern Volkite weaponry sound better ("burning volkite" seems too informal, but could stay the unofficial name, like "space marine" is the informal name of the Adeptus Astartes.)

The colour schemes are nice. I seem to see a lot of red though ? Or is it my imagination ?

Probably your imagination :tongue.: . I think that Torrens pattern volkite sounds good (Torrens is Latin for burning) and, as Thorn said, keep "Burning" as the informal name.

Normally, most pattern names take the name of the forge world on which they were made or the STC discovered (a slight exception being Deimos pattern, which is one of Mars's moons, even if the vehicles were constructed on Mars I believe)

Of course, who says Torrens pattern doesn't exist ?

I'm not a fan personally of the balance of the burning volkites. Deflagrate works in legion lists because it still has a 3+ save to overcome. BS5 with a signum, Wounding on 2's generating another load of hits wounding on 2's and ignoring 3+ saves is rough. Considering they blitz squads already (BS5 is 35ish hits, 30ish wounds, 10 unsaved, 8-9 wounds, 2-3 unsaved becomes a theoretical 30ish wounds, 30 unsaved, 25 more usnaved is 55 dead 3+.

Overkill, sure, but that is 5 dead per marine (including the addition of a signum), meaning a squad of just 5 would kill a tac squad. Gets hot is rarely a penalty (2-3 dead marines out of 40 shots isn't going to affect a squad massively).

I'm against it, unless it is a 1/battle thing, and there is some form of greater penalty than simple gets hot. I can't think of an easy silution to that leading to think that the idea is doomed to the typical 'overpowered homebrew trope'

Sorry

Two solutions:

- Get's hot on 1s and 2s

 OR:

- Get's hot wounds resolved at AP 3

I have to ask. Do volkites need an anti-armour variant? I would say that they are already worth taking on their own merits. I could maybe see a sniper variant which could penetrate armour, but with fewer shots. Would an alternative not be to slightly improve a unit carrying them with say preferred enemy, or sniper over changing the weapon itself?
