Valkyrie's Ultramarine WIP

Recommended Posts

Hi All,

After alot of planning I've decided to finally paint up an army other than my original army of Black Templars since having 7k+ points starts to get unmanageable. However since I went for the 3rd edition starter army way back when and never deviated fully except the odd test model, I began planning an army that should take me a long time to collect all the bits I will need and plan how I want it to look and feel. Having always been drawn to ultramarines as a potential 2nd space marine army to have, I finally decided to try my hand at them.

As a warning I'm not a brilliant painter but having spent the last few weeks reading almost all the WIP and HOH posts, I feel inspired to delve into this project.

Having thought about what company to do, I decided to go with 3rd company as I quite like the red contrast with the blue and gold of their armour. So here is my test model.

The base isn't the final one. Also this is the first time I've used magnets so I can change the loadouts of the models. I also have the backpacks and heads magnetised for full aesthetic and customisable army. Still need to detail the test model as well but the basics are done.

Hoping to have more done soon.

Looking really good! Love the way you have done the cloth/parchment tabard.

All your painting is very neat too which is great. I'm guessing you are drybrushing the armour? I would suggest trying out edge highlighting because it looks like you are good enough to do it, just my opinion.

Also feel like the helmet mask (for want of a better word) could maybe be picked out in gold?

Nevertheless, just my two cents, looks fantastic. Hope to see more soon!

Done a little bit of work of the original mini, taken your advice and tried doing some highlights which made it look alot better! However as I'm just doing a quick update I didn't take the best pictures so it may not show below :( I'm going to wait to paint the unit markings etc. until I have more models and a firm idea of how I want to proceed with it. Thinking I will try free-handing all the markings which I've only done once before but you have to start somewhere I guess!

While I was looking though some old minis I actually found my original test mini for this army from back in 2013. I may find a way to use him in future but I like to think I have got better as a painter since then.

Much prefer the way I have gone with my new minis but thought I'd share the beginning of this idea for me. I also have the next 3 minis ready for spray now!

Those nipples from the sanguinary armour had to go! But looking forward to having a few of these done. Also planned out a roadmap for how I want to go afterwards but its not finished yet but I will share once its finalised. Hope to keep going on this project as I have a habit of start/stop progress normally.

  • 4 weeks later...

So the first combat squad is almost done. Just need to finish off the head of the left most one and as well as add a pauldron onto the right side of him, but overall I'm happy with the outcome. Need to start thinking about basing ideas but might wait until I have a few more units lined up for this army before committing to a theme.

Sorry for the picture and lighting quality but still trying to find the right set up currently.

However at the moment I'm going to switch to a couple other small projects to prevent burn out on this project as they took me a while to get done. Lined up some Black Templar Sword Brethren and possibly a test mini of a random chapter to practise my freehand skills before committing unit markings to the UM figures.
