SW1
Work let half the staff go home early and then it got busy. Seems our resource an planning team don't know how to factor in football matches into demand requirements. :( Managed some very rough sketches which give a feel for at sort of shapes that work. If I'd realised work was going to be numpties I would have done more of the basic shapes rather than having fun tryin to remember the Arbites symbol. http://www.bolterandchainsword.com/gallery/image/164983-image/ http://www.bolterandchainsword.com/gallery/image/164984-image/ Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/312809-diy-board-suggestionstips/page/2/#findComment-4158877 Share on other sites
treadhead
Heres some of my old foamboard buildings (last post on the link for the piccie) from back in the early days I'll try to dig out some of the newer bits and do some pics if you'd like? http://z11.invisionfree.com/Work_In_Progress/index.php?showtopic=243&hl= some good stuff by other posters in there for inspiration as well Foamboard cubes with some wooden kerbs not the prettiest city but the idea was early colony with pre fab buildings so no major architectural works yet (or in other words i was feeling lazy) but the basic buildings were very easy to make 8" (x 8") x 4" tall with a inner parapet height of an inch or so and around 2" of floor/ceiling on the inside of the upper level supported everything from metal dreads through to gretchin hordes while still letting you get in the building to move models Couple of tips Save your offcuts from door ways, windows etc even if you're not going to make doors the bits will be usefull for bracing floors / walls / corners Keep a scale figure nearby throughout I use an imperial guardsman called Bob Remember to leave plenty of room to get your hands in to move your models around during the game, I had to junk my second biggest building (2 levels 16" wide by 8" deep by 7" tall) for this very reason Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/312809-diy-board-suggestionstips/page/2/#findComment-4159029 Share on other sites

I've got a bag of offcuts I dive into when I need to brace something. Remember a small triangle hidden under the floor helps keep things square/rigid. I've also been trying to find a guide to joining boards together. Finally found it ... http://oinksterrain.blogspot.co.uk/2011/12/working-with-foamboard-joining-basics.html?m=1 Give it a good read and for basic builds I'd recommend using this type of joint to save having to do much work hiding joints on the corners!!! DiscipleOfTheWord
@SW1- thanks for the sketches and the joining guide, any idea how to make the Arbites symbol? @treadhead- now I have an idea of what a finished building should look like, also thanks for the tips. I'd like to see the new pics too if thats possible Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/312809-diy-board-suggestionstips/page/2/#findComment-4159191 Share on other sites
SW1
I'd draw out the symbol on cardboard and cut out the shape which I'd then glue down onto the building surface. Maybe do a second layer on certain bits to give more of a relief to it. It's a mailed fist holding a set of scales with a stylised I sign. DiscipleOfTheWord
It's a mailed fist holding a set of scales with a stylised I sign. Yeah I know (saw it in your sketch) but how do you actually make one? You need to break down the shape to an outline. Cut out this outline in card. Then add an extra layer on where you want to build up more. SW1
Something possibly like this? http://www.bolterandchainsword.com/gallery/image/165020-image/ Really rough looking but gives a better idea than trying to explain by text. DiscipleOfTheWord
Looks quite complicated but I'll give it a go. SW1
They look great. The main trick is keeping to the same scale on all the pieces. Can't wait to see the board. :tu: Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/312809-diy-board-suggestionstips/page/2/#findComment-4160472 Share on other sites
treadhead
Nice set of ruins there already look much better than my early stuff. Onto some piccies I'd like to introduce Bob http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b264/treadhead2/DSCF0655.jpg He's been around for years dodging paint, shards of plastic and various forms of foam http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b264/treadhead2/DSCF0654.jpg Here he is showing the offcut bracing method http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b264/treadhead2/DSCF0653.jpg And the newer stuff http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b264/treadhead2/DSCF0638.jpg pump house and pipeline http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b264/treadhead2/DSCF0643.jpg Bob managed to doge this shot http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b264/treadhead2/DSCF0648.jpg Foam board with a thin(ish) card layer and some pvc plumbing pipe and some more card for the collars with an extra layer of card for detail on top of the collar http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b264/treadhead2/DSCF0645.jpg And the cod tavern http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b264/treadhead2/DSCF0665.jpg http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b264/treadhead2/DSCF0662.jpg Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/312809-diy-board-suggestionstips/page/2/#findComment-4161178 Share on other sites
DiscipleOfTheWord
Wow, that pumphouse looks amazing, as does the multi storey building Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/312809-diy-board-suggestionstips/page/2/#findComment-4161981 Share on other sites
SW1
Have to agree. That pump house is a great example of repeating patterns bringing models together. Have you any updates on your scenery? DiscipleOfTheWord
Here is an example of the floors, with a renegade enforcer for scale purposes: Here is the board layout so far, obviously very WIP, vindicator for scale: My idea is to have the WB's and cultists coming on from the left in a quarter-circle around the bottom left corner building, with cultist sharpshooters in the other 2 buildings Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/312809-diy-board-suggestionstips/page/2/#findComment-4162864 Share on other sites
