Darrens XIII Legion Ultramarines

Snakes of Ithaka

Recommended Posts

so after a while of looking around the threads i thought i'd start one for my new army some 30k ultramarines, i have toyed with starting a 30k force before and purchased a few bits from forge world with the intent of doing a salamander army, i did a ten man take squad then kinda got side tracked with my bolt action army however as soon as i saw the Guilliman model i knew that that it was time to start my ultramarines (my 40k army is the 4th company ultramarines).

So i picked up the tempest book and have started by stripping the models i had painted up as salamanders, so here's the first of them painted up as ultramarine's.

not the best painter in the world but quite happy with how he turned out, the plan is to do the rest of the now cleaned marines, once they are done i'll probably pick up some new bits from forge world.

now i need to spend some time thinking of some background for the army thinking i might have them as the 104th company.

until next time comments and criticisms welcome

thanks for the comments, the head is from the finecast sergeant chronus, i used the body for a conversion a while ago and had the head laying around spare, i'm about to raid the bits box to see if i can make a suitable looking Praetor

thanks for the comments guys

Your mini looks nice. How about doing something about the helmet lenses? Maybe paint it black since its probably switched off.

that is a great idea, i have since gone back and painted the lenses black and it looks so much better, so i have spent the last couple of days paining up some more troops for the tactical squad also decided to use standard GW shoulder pads for my MK4 guys .

not the best pic as having to use my phone at the moment will have to dig the camera out and take some better ones, still trying to decide what bolters to give them. I'm basing a lot of my scheme on the pictures in tempest but i'm torn over if i should use phobo's or tigrus.

So i have worked out a shopping list from forge world that i hope to get in the next few weeks, which should allow me to build another 10 man tactical squad and a 5 man locutarus storm squad along with the Ultramarine transfer sheet.

i managed to pick a few of these up from ebay last year i have used some on my 40k army and i have been using them so far on this project as i think they look quite good.

until next time

I think the Tigrus pattern look good with MKIV.

I've been thinking of using some brass etch to tart up a squad of Locutarus.

Your MKIV marines are looking good, did you make the bases?

thanks Jud, i have some of the forge world brass etch as well and they are easy to use and they do help to add to the overall look of a model, i wish i could make the bases would save me a bit of money as i got them off ebay.

right here's my bit box attempt at my legion centurion, hes currently held together with blue tac

not 100% sold on him at the moment think he looks a little to 40kish, what you guys think?

I'm going to have a play around and see what else i can come up with, also hoping to finish my tactical squad only 4 left to paint up.

comments and criticisms is welcome as ever.

Nice work man, only thing I can think of to make it better would be to find some MK4 legs in a similar pose or convert the knee pads to resemble MK4. Love the 40k upgrade kit I bought one a while ago and will be using it to customise the Praetor model. Once the legs are sorted a lot of the 40k look will fall away.

Beautiful Centurion! As the others have said, changing the legs would be a good start to make him look a bit more HH. If you can't find an appropriate set of running legs, you could just give him a regular standing pair and turn his head to face his right.

cheers for the comments, i managed to find a spare set of mk4 legs in my bits box so i'll have ago at adding it to the rest of the model, i'll hopefully get some pictures up later when i get home from work.

as well as trying to finish of the tactical squad i have started kit bashing apothecary to go with the mk4 apothecary i picked up off of ebay, thinking i'll do the kit bashed in the standard ultramarine scheme i'm using for my army and the mk4 i'll attempt to do the scheme soon in tempest, which involves painting white which i'm not particularly good at so will be a handy lesson.

Also i'm thinking about getting some of the citadel air paints so i can airbrush the macragge blue and speed up the time its taking me to paint, has anyone one used them if so what do you think of them?

so have made son progress finishing of the legion centurion, i managed to find a pair of mark 4 legs and yeah the changed really worked and help to make the model look a lot less like a 40k model, i'm pretty happy with the out come and think its one of the best minis i have painted so far, still need to pick up some more bases so i can finish him off.

so with them completed i have placed an order with FW so hopefully they will arrive early next week so i can get cracking on them, as to regards with the fluff for my force i have been reading through tempest and thinking of changing them to the 14th chapter, i really need to get some stuff down on paper.

until next time.

thanks for the comments, as i said really pleased with how he turned out hoping i can keep that level of painting going with the rest of my army

Oh gosh he looks amazing.

The only way you could make me like him more is giving him Maximus-pattern arms instead of crusade ones. biggrin.png

What kit does this gorgeous aquila shoulder pad come from?

the aquila shoulder pad is from the sternguard box set

How did you do that gold?! I must know!!!

i have used four colours on the gold they are:

vallejo game colour extra opaque heavy brown

GW Retributor Armour

GW Liberator Gold

GW Agrax Earthshade

i start with a base coat of the heavy brown, followed by layers of retributor armour then liberator gold then just washed back with agrax earthshade so nice and simple really.

Having to say that i really love the 2 new GW golds that they released with the age of sigmar, they fit perfectly for the vision of have for my ultramarines in my head.

on another note this little lot arrived today smile.png

so plenty to be getting on with.

  • 4 weeks later...

so been a while since i posted an update, works been keeping me busier then usual but have made some progress so here we go:

as soon as i saw this model i really wanted to get a deredeo pattern dreadnought, still need to pick up the aiolos missile launchers for the top.

http://i909.photobucket.com/albums/ac299/Ventris6405/20151025_131719_zps6wpawotv.jpg

http://i909.photobucket.com/albums/ac299/Ventris6405/20151025_131714_zpsqeylvkdi.jpg

still need to do a few touch ups as well as some weathering on the feet.

my first tactical squad has taken me forever to paint as i tend to be slow painter but finally only have one marine left the tactical squad mixed a few parts and added a couple of mk 3 suits into the squad, mainly as i've said before there are all made up from my bits box.

http://i909.photobucket.com/albums/ac299/Ventris6405/20151025_131615_zpsrqoavytz.jpg

and finally a group shot of all my legion assets so far

http://i909.photobucket.com/albums/ac299/Ventris6405/20151025_131853_zpsf8tg9sr5.jpg

so making some progress, i currently have another tactical squad on the work bench at the moment this time i'm using the FW praetorian upgrade kit for them, now thinking about what i'll add to the force next maybe a sicaran i would like to added Guilliman but don't think id be able to do him justice  as still not very good at painting faces, so more practice required on them.

as for fluff i have settled on doing the 14th company during the Calth conjunction where they were stationed at the Dainhold's manufactoria, hoping to get something written up for them soon and ill post them when its done.

until next time
