Wolf King has almost arrived

Got mine today - you're not missing out on the colour sections. It's your typical fold out that reveals a larger version of the cover, there's a two page stellar course / timeline, a visual of Russ' flagship (and it doesn't look too different from a regular battle barge) and a page with Wolves in older marks of armour. There's no other illustrations I can see from my cursory glance.

I have a potential timeline issue. Someone please point me the correct order of things.

In Deliverance Lost, we see that Alpharius (the real one) stayed with Horus aboard the Alpha after Isstvan V (which started 556.006.M31) and for quite some time too because the events of that book took some time to unfold. Possibly up to 008.M31. During this whole time Omegon was infiltrating the Raven Guard.

Immediately after Isstvan (still 006.M31), main bulk of the Alpha Legion assaulted Paramar. Perhaps this excluded the twin primarchs.

According to The Serpent Beneath, in 006.M31 (close to 007), Omegon was able to destroye the Tenebrae installation (though not himself being present, he was controlling the operation which would be difficult being infiltrated to Raven Guard...)

At the very start of 007.M31, a big Alpha Legion fleet encountered the Space Wolves (and White Scars briefly) and followed the SW fleet to Alexxes Nebula. The Alpha was within this fleet, apparently with Alpharius. Sources: Scars and Wolf King.

So, what did I miss? Did Deliverance Lost just just take place within a few months? Seems unlikely with all the travel and raising up new legionaries. Still, it's been a long time since I read that book.

The Twin Primarchs weren't at Paramar. And Deliverance Lost did only take a few months. That was the point of the revolutionary new way of implantation. It took a process that normally took years(months if you cut corners) and made it take days, weeks at most. So a lot actually got done in a pretty short amount of time.

And yet, it took 98 days for Branne to come to pick up Corax from Isstvan. During this time, did Paramar already happen? Perhaps, could be plausible. Paramar is said to take place 673.006.M31, that is, 38 days after Isstvan V.

After that, they take detour to Terra, then back to Kiavahr, figure out the secrets of the gene tech, implant it to new initiates etc. Oh and they also invade Cruciax in-between. Usually warp trips between far corners of the galaxy take months.

Alpharius, along with the fleet and the flagship Alpha need to be at Alexxes by about 108.007.M31 (start of Scars). From rescue of Corax this leaves about 3 months for all this to happen.

Sounds a bit cramped up there in the timeline.

Timeline is becoming more of an issue with each HH novel/novella which cope with different events. Till the Siege of Terra it would be completely broken.  Different authors; different Legions a lot of cramped data - as could be expected from a serie of 100 books

I'm re-reading the novels currently, sorting out the timeline as best I can, and Deliverance Lost is one I haven't reached yet, so I only have my memory of originally reading it, plus a few notes, but from what I do have:

The First Battle for Paramar V occurs 38 days after the Dropsite Massacre. From what I recall there's no indication that either Alpharius or Omegon are present there.

Corax is rescued from Isstvan V 98 days after the Dropsite Massacre. It appears that the traitors are preparing to depart the system around this time (late 006), and Alpharius is still there. Omegon appears to be on Kiavahr already by this point, and does not leave until the end of Deliverance Lost. While I don't have notes of an exact time for this, it is supposedly more than 300 days after the Dropsite Massacre when Corax finally meets up with the Emperor, before leaving Terra. Even allowing for a quick journey to Deliverance and the rapid creation of the new marines, this puts the end of Deliverance Lost somewhere in the later half of 007.

The attack on Tenebrae 9-50 is, I believe, early 007. I know it takes place just before Scars, but Scars is another I need to re-read more closely for date references. But I think that's where it is. Both Alpharius and Omegon are seen, but neither actually takes part in the attack, so they could be anywhere at this point.

Alpharius is seen in Wolf King during the last engagement between the Space Wolves and the Alpha Legion, which occurs near the end of 007 (805).

Alpharius doesn't really present a problem. From the above, it can be taken that he remains in the Isstvan system for a few months after the Dropsite Massacre, then departs, and later fights Leman Russ in the Alaxxes Nebula.

Omegon is more tricky, since Deliverance Lost seems to tie him to Kiavahr for a long time, including the time when Serpent Beneath occurs. While he could conceivably orchestrate the attack on Tenebrae 9-50 while there, he also appears to meet up with Alpharius in person. Here we seem to have to either stretch plausibility about Omegon's flexible movements during Deliverance Lost, or assume more Alpha Legion trickery regarding who is who and who is where.

That's the best I've got for now anyway.

  • 11 months later...
  • 3 weeks later...

It just leaked like every week's releases a few days ahead of time. Oddly, it doesn't seem like they put out an audiobook for it along with the hardback, which they've been doing for all but Brotherhood of the Storm. With BotS, they held it back til it was collected in Legacies of Betrayal, so that might indicate that it'll be collected sooner rather than later... or not.

Probably much sooner than we think
