Jolemai
Elastic (rubber) bands. Love them or hate, we all have one knocking around be it on some mail, in a ball, near your stationary, etc, etc. Of course, over time, these snap and 99% of the time they go in the bin. However, I can't help but wonder if there's another use? Many of us sculpt (or try to sculpt) straps on weapons and so on. Would an elastic band work? How well do they take glue and paint? Has anyone tried this already? The smaller ones could even be twisted into a rope effect... no? Venerable Jazzman
If they're new, they take glue and paint ok. The problem is that they'll still dry out and crack over time, so the end result won't look great. I'd use plastic card for straps, and wire for ropes & cables. You can get really thin plastic card from things like yogurt pots, so there's no shortage of it, ever. Jolemai
No real way to "seal" them? Interesting reply though, thanks Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/314843-elastic-bands/#findComment-4195799 Share on other sites
Gurth
I wouldn’t use them, for the same reasons Brother Jazzman mentioned. You’ll be far better off using a more stable material, such as plastic card, metal sheet or (thick) foil, insulation tape, or even ribbons as used in gift-wrapping. Gordon Shumway
Insulation tape is actually a really good idea, specifically electrical tape. Fold it over on itself for added thickness and to make the sticky side a non issue. Gurth
Been used by military (and probably other) modellers since the ’70s at least You can get the adhesive off with white spirit or similar, but I tended to leave it on so the tape would stick to the model where I wanted it to before fixing it in place with superglue.
