Skitarii Allies, vanguard and ranger options

Hello there!

I've just gone and bought myself 2 boxes of skitarii to use as an allied detachment. I'm normally a DA player, but I recently finished a lovely knight errant and wanted some skitarii to escort it into battle.

I know skitarii loadouts have been covered already but my loadout ability is fairly limited as I don't intend to purchase any more skitarii boxsets.

I aim to make one squad of vanguard (10) and one squad of rangers (10), but given each box only has one arc rifle and one plasma caliver my choices are few.

I've read that rangers are better just with their stock weapons as specials have reduced range compared to their galvanics, and I'm not sold on the arquebus as most vehicles in my meta are AV12+. vanguard rad carbs look good too, and I can see them using arc rifles well, but would they be better with the plasma despite the points cost of them, or better left alone?

I'm probably not going to be in a position to take an Alpha as a warlord so Preferred Enemy might not come into play for plasma calivers to get max efficiency out of them.

Is there something I'm overlooking/ should reconsider?

Any help would be fab biggrin.png

As Commodus says you reroll 1s for your first two turns so you get 3 turns out of them which is great. You'll have two and 1 squad with 1 or two works perfectly.

1 ranger squad with an aricubus.. Is OK.... I really don't think they are very good.

Arc rifles are money.

Also you can just call both units vanguard even if one has ranger heads. It's just the guns that is the problem.

Vanguards rock so I'd personally make both vanguards, but I'd understand if you didn't ^.^

And I have to agree with mmimzie.  Rangers are ok, and it looks interesting to have both types of Skitarii on the field.  That being said, I get far more mileage out of my Vanguard than I expected.  Between Rad Poisoning and their Radium Carbines, I'd go so far as to say that they're the all-round best basic Troop option available to the Imperium.

All sounds great advice, I'm trying to weigh up the plasma still. As I run dark angels primarily, I have easy access to cheapish plasma, and not sure the need for an 18" assault 3 for 15 points more than a rifle cuts it, but I can see the doctrines do make it much more appealing.

maybe I could turn 5 of the rangers into an additional 5 man vanguard squad, but I think I'd need to work it all out on paper.

Arc rifles are a dead cert. I will use probably use both of them on a vanguard squad thinking about it. getting up close and personal with rapid fire range sounds best. could always assault with them too seeing as they're radioactive :-)

Yeah, as I take Skitarii as my main infantry alongside my Knights our experiences are going to vary quite a bit.  The Plasma Caliver is my weapon of choice, as I'm usually pointing my Vanguard in the direction of massed MEQs.

I can also vouch for the viciousness of the Arc Rifle.  I recently played a few matches against an AM Armored Company.  I had one ten-man squad with Arc Rifles and they chewed up everything they came across.  Rapid-fire Haywire is an ugly thing.

The only utility i get out of the Transuranic Arquebus is picking out specialists and Characters.  I rarely take my Rangers (which I equipped with the TA) and when I do they're mostly relegated to harassment and objective-holding.  Single-shot sniper rifles are a Hail Mary pass and against even light vehicles, S3 with Armorbane simply can't be relied on.

basic rangers are brilliant support troops the vanguards are close in support why not break it to 4 squads of 5

2 screening squads of van guards plain then 5 vanguards with 2 plasma and a omicope

and 5 rangers 2 arc rifles omniscope

plonk the knight in the middle

not only will you be able hit more targets each round but also the enemy will waste fire power on the smaller squads

Since the plasma is sooo expensive. It's quite reasonable to take 1 squad with a single caliver. Three calivers double the cost of the unit with out making it any hardier. So it turns the unit into a glass cannon.

If it were me I'd make 2 vanguard units with a single plasma each

If you are bringing them as allies, you really want those arc rifles. Everyone has access to AP2, not everyone has Haywire.

I frankly wouldn't bother with Rangers at all if I were you. Take a small Vanguard unit, two arc rifles, and an arc pistol, put them in a drop pod to go after a vehicle. The take a large one with two calivers and do the same thing. I have a unit of rangers only for Convocation.
