No Foes Remain
Hey all, So I ordered two boxes of the new HH box from GW and chose to paint them as Ultramarines, but I want to paint them with a metalic base. My idea is black primer, mechanicus grey, leadbelcher then iron breaker and then was thinking of a blue wash but I'm not sure what wash to use and was wondering if anyone had used such a technique and had any advice. Thanks, Ventris. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/315839-metalic-ultramarines/ Share on other sites
Aspecti
I wouldn't bother with the grey layer, nor leadbelcher. Prime black, paint the model with your brightest silver, wash with nuln oil and let it fully dry, then apply 2-3 coats of drakenhof nightshade.Or buy Vallejo's metallic medium and mix your own metallic blue and save lots of time :) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/315839-metalic-ultramarines/#findComment-4220703 Share on other sites
No Foes Remain
I think runefang steel is my brightest, and I may have some nightshade... yep a full pot. Cool, will find a 'volunteer model' and test it out. Thanks, I'm not a great painter so I lack the knowledge when it comes to painting. Aspecti
I did a couple of test models like that a while ago and they turned out pretty decent. Just be patient and let the washes really dry fully before applying another layer. No Foes Remain
How long would you say to wait fully for the washes to dry, as I'm not really good at judging those sort of things. Bung
Best way for that would be using an airbrush, you could have the look of FW brass scorpion, but in blue. Lucien Eilam
I'd look outside the Citadel range for this. The matt finish of Citadel Shades/Glazes will work against the metallic finish you want. I'd use one of the bright VMA metallics like Aluminium, a wash of Tamiya Clear Smoke to shade, followed by a couple of glazes of Tamiya Clear Blue. Here's a blog post about some Japanese robot thing painted using this sort of method (minus the Smoke stage): http://www.graemenattress.com/wp/vf-25f-172-armored-messiah-alto-custom-part-2/ He's laid it on quite thick there, you can build up the depth of colour gradually with multiple thin layers if that's too dark, or add a drop of dark blue/black ink if you want it darker. I would, but I have never used an airbrush and I'm kinda old fashoned and prefer to paint by hand. I'd look outside the Citadel range for this. The only reason I didn't look outside the GW range is because I didn't really know what colours to look for nor, esspecially since its hard to judge what the colour will come out like in person. Well, the Airbrush was invented at the end of the 1900 century to work on photographys so its not that new for painting. :D Maybe look up the Alpha Legion models from Forgeworld, you could go the same way just with blue and have a real good metalic look. In my opinion it would look better than simply wash the model. Grotsmasha
B&C to the rescue, enter Viva Metallica, http://www.bolterandchainsword.com/topic/151098-viva-metallica/ I recommend grabbing a test marine and a couple of different Shades/Washes and try them out on different parts of the body and see how each looks. Kaedes Nex
If you want an even easier time, simply grab Army Painter's brightest silver primer, then use Tamiya Clear Blue.
