Emperor's Children ...... Land Raider/ Name the Legion

I’ve decided to split my WIP logs, to make it easier to follow, rather than posting Night Lords and Emperor’s Children in the same topic.

 

I’ve long held a fondness for the III legion since the old days of Rogue Trader. The Index Astartes article prompted me to get back in to 40k. However I was struck by the tragic nature of their fall. Then the Horus Heresy books came along, and how could I not love the Fulgrim novel. I actually liked the ending – it is now a bit anti-climax given Fulgrim escaped the painting… but that is for another post.

 

I’ve been pondering it for a while, but I have finally got around to starting a pre-heresy force. I am basing it before the events of Istvaan, so it is whilst the legion was still loyal, however I will add in some specific traitor units whilst keeping the bulk ‘either way’ in appearance. I also think it will be fun to convert up some of the characters. I am much more of a painter than a gamer, so shall probably concentrate of what I want to paint, as opposed to what I ‘should’ paint!

 

My initial thoughts were to base it around Marius Vairosean’s third company, but as mentioned about by swopping the Captain/Command it can easily be another company, such as Solomon Demeter’s Second…..

 

So far I’ve got a paltry 4 Marines and 1 Sergeant – but there is more to come….

Anyway… I’ve been greatly inspired by Brother Heinrich’s Night Lords and jumped at the chance to ‘enlist’ in the 15^th Company in the form of an alter ego…. I felt it only appropriate to return the favour, so here is what everyone’s favourite Night Lord would look like if he wore purple….

Here are few quick pics I floated by Brother Heinrich to see if he was ok with the plans. I have since magnitised the Phoenix Spear and pistol, to allow for them to be alternated. The back pack is also magnetized, should I want to add a jump pack at a later date. Any comments and criticisms all appreciated – it’ll help me improve.

I am going for Longitudinal crests for SNCOs and Transverse for Captains. Obviously as the crest on the First Sergeant is more elaborate than a standard sergeant.

 

I’ve also posted my version still WIP of Marius Vairosean previously in the Heresy forums, I’m debating what to do with him now, as I am not convinced he looks ‘heresy’ enough……

He's had the Eye of Horus replaced with a brass etched one, so it looks less chaosy and has been painted purple, but I'm not feeling the love. It is mainly the chest that I'm not liking. The body might end up being relegated to a Lt or something.

 

Any comments here will be appreciated.

 

I've got a few more line marines to finish the squad off - sadly they'll need to be re-photo'd as they are too blurry.

I've been plodding away with these guys (and some Night Lords), so there will be more updates in due course. I've done a few step by step pics of the tactical marines.- just need to decide what to upload. I have 3 pretty much done, just need to get the bases finished, so will post them up soon -- i just keep getting distracted.

 

Anyway - I've got into the BaC stuff and have been pondering how to 'bling' up the terminators; here is a very early WIP; I'm trying to recreate some of the artwork for the ECs in heresy card game. I'm thinking the topknot might need to be bigger and the helmet might need to sit lower.

I've completed the 'purple' elements of the armour on Sgt Henricus - however as I've not used a aquilla breast plate, instead using a palatine blade claw torso, I can't help looking at it and think 'its a little too purple' especially compared to the other marines.

 

The gold is only base coated - so it will look a lot brighter when it's done.

 

I'm doing his shoulder pads and face plate a very bright silver/platinum colour to signify he'd be a palatine blade. I am just thinking should I do the torso in a silver too? Any suggestions/ideas?

It's been a while but I've made a concerted effort to finish my latest batch of EC's. My squad is pretty much done - just need to finish basing them before I add the pics.

 

I've tried my hand at light box as I wasn't happy with my normal photos. Hopefully you guys will see the difference!

 

Anyway, if any of you wondered what Brother Heinrich would look like as a member of the III legion, behold - First Sergeant Henricus Vestalis. He is still in need of basing and a little fine detailing (spotted a bloody mould line on the backpack too! Grr). He now comes with added Choom!!

Here is a little experimentation with white on my Apothecary pledge for the L&T- it actually has a little pearlescent effect, which doesn't show up on camera sadly. Still held together with BluTac, so the pose will probably change a little.

Why thank you --- he still needs finishing off, but I do think it is worthy of Heinrich!!

 

This is the one of my Emperor's Children veterans for L&T; in game terms giving them power weapons and volkites is probably not the best idea, but it looks cool! I really wanted them to look 'uber' flash as is befitting the III legion! I think white accent for veterans works well, so well intact the Ultramarines stole it.....

 

Kitbash of the Sternguard set, with other bits and bobs for good measure. I'm going to add pouches, pistol holsters and maybe even a slung bolter. 3 more of these guys to come, then I need to figure out how to do the Sgt! He's held together with a blu-tac and there's still a little more work to do on the sword, but I wanted to get posting!

Well it's been a while, a lot going on in the real world, but I've been plodding away with the veterans, two are pretty much finished bar the basing and two more just need a detailing.

 

I've also been working on an exciting Stormbird build, so if you've not seen that, please check it out and offer me some pointers!

This is my proposed mock up of Solomon Demeter; I'm planning on using him as a Breacher Captain. I'm going to replace his hammer with a huge chainsword so he matches the fluff. Any suggestions or amendments welcome, really want this to be something special! I'd been pondering Demeter for sometime, thinking the 2nd could be show cased as 'less' favoured with older armour MKs. I've posted it on Facebook, and the ornate bolter from the command squad has been mentioned, for his 'enhanced' bolter.

 

He is held together with blu tac - so excuse the minutae of the pose and the head, it does sit below the gorget normally. I am thinking of swopping out the left arm with Eidolon's.

No, it's from the Hell Striders kit, and is as rare as hens teeth on bits sites....

It's been a while since an update, mainly due to a hectic few months in the real world. Plus - I was booked to attend an MKA course, which meant I kind of didn't want to paint anything until I'd learnt from the masters..... So the Loyalty and Treachery thing failed miserably...

 

I have to say, the course was worth every penny and well worth not painting anything, as it's improved my skills no end. Hopefully the pictures will bear out the proof!!

 

Of course this does kind of mean the existing ECs may be in for a dettol bath or at least a few touch ups....

I'm really happy with the purple, much more vibrant than I had before, which I feel works well for the EC - I've some marines to go with, they just require a little finishing and basing.....

 

Looks like the ETL will be the ideal opportunity to re-do a few of my existing models and put some paint on a few resin goodies......

Here is the first offering from the MKA infantry course - I didn't finish the bolter on the course and they were unbased, so these guys have been sitting idle for a while. Took the chance to add a few more details and do the scenic base. Am considering adding a bit of snow (I just love using it).. or will that be too much!?!?!?!

 

So this is just a basic tactical marine (got to start somewhere) - I really think I should start to devise some background/fluff for these guys! The purple is much more vibrant (in real life) than compared to my existing ones. Anyway, really looking forward to re-starting the army.....
