The old blood

Hi there

I've been meaning to post a log for years now but never organised myself enough to do so. Somehow I now have enough time to actually log my work and so I present the start of a new project. The old blood.

"By knife, bolt and blood I will oppose you tyrant"

Commander Justinian

The 19th line company of the 4th grand battalion is nothing special. It's warriors and organisation follow the same pattern of every other general purpose company within the Iron warriors. Perhaps it's sole distinguishing feature is the high level of Terran Astarte's that form its squads and officer corp. Upon the onset of the heresy the company was under refit and rearnment upon a garrison world. Upon receiving news of their primarchs new loyalties they set out in pursuit of their traitor primarch to teach him the meaning loyalty.

So I've started out with the calth set like many others and have one half of my army just about assembled. To start things off here's my test legionarie.

Storm captain Nachtfel is the 12th Astartes to hold the position since the formation of the company 65 years prior. He will certainly not be the last...

Next up is the first part of my 15 man tac squad, not much to say asides from them being a rather obvious work in progress.

Finally here's my iron havoc squad armed with missile launchers. Bit of a kitbash unit really, I'm looking at having 7 missile launcher armed iron Havocs and 7 heavy bolter Havocs for the list.

As you can see everything is a bit work in progress currently but I'm hoping to have a picture update with progress at least twice a week. Work, moving home and chasing my little bunny around eats up a lot of my hobby time...

I hope the pictures work alright, I've been fiddling around with them in the hope they'll work.

I look forward to seeing the progress. Using the box to fill out and expand my IW army as well and finish up an all terminator assault force(once I remembered I only needed 10 more cataphracts to do it with)

I think the fluff is funny, simply because I have seen so many people lately starting loyalist IW armies, including my own, that I think we will outnumber the traitor forces.

Yeah I've noticed the loyalist iw popping up all other the place recently its rather bizarre heh

Welp I forgot to add commander Justinian.

A simple but sound stratagist, Justinian was an old Terran through and through. He achieved his command at a young age and took control of a battalion pre unification with the primarch. His concerns voiced at the decimation earnt his primarchs ire and his command was stripped of him. He was eventually posted to an understrength company whose sole purpose was to clog the guns of the enemy.

Obviously the rhino needs a repaint heh

Finally here's the start of my master of signal consul. I have plans to have one of every consul type for my army and fluff them as junior officers responsible for unit sections.

Cool stuff! Loyalist IW are the bomb.

Thanks for confirming the Skitarii head looks sweet on a marine body ;)

That MoS is really cool! What's the base model? Is it one of those 40k masters of the chapter?

You completely correct, the mos base model is the master of marches, I remounted him on a correct sized base, chucked a new head and hand on him.

Thanks for the response everyone! It means a lot to me!

Don't think it's that mysterious really. Iron Warriors have some exceptional characteristics in both fluff and tabletop terms.

Perturabo though, he has an effect on the Legion that is... less than celebratory.  It's easy to identify with the Iron Warriors, pre-unification with him. Doing the dirty jobs well, not receiving much in the way of recognition for that, and persevering in the face of it? I think I just described work life for  a lot of us. Post decimation, there's a nobility to those remaining, and some of the savagery in assault they're known for, pent up frustrations released, is something a lot of folks can identify with.

Loyalist Iron Warriors, are Iron Warriors at the best moments of the Legion, which is not to take away from the malignity they have become in 40k. Their chaos fluff has a pretty good fan base. Their fall is epic.

The color scheme being pretty awesome doesn't hurt any either.

One of the excellent things about the heresy is it allows players to create character's that can appear both in 30k and in 40k in the form of dreadnoughts or chaos champions.

Well not to be left out heres a wip of Justinian a few thousand years in the future... Perhaps obsessing over revenge and justice isnt always quite that healthy.

  • 2 weeks later...

Reinforcement time!

Picked up my second betrayal at calth box today and an ironclad dread.

These two are stock with no further adjustments

However my second set of characters have undergone some minor changes, the chaplain was a simple head swap from a devastator marine while the terminator consul was a bit more involved with carving a power sword arm down and mounting a new set of tassles to him.

And in other news I've had my first few games with my iron warriors, admittedly both times I used 40k rules to represent the army with imperial fists chapter tactics. I'm currently in a mini campaign of sorts with escalating points every game. The highlight of the first game was a rampaging wolf lord who slaughtered my army save for a devastator squad getting mown down in over watch by said devastator squad. Sadly next game said wolf lord butchered around 30 marines singlehandedly.

So in light of my first few battles I thought id write a bit of fluff for each game.

Justinians orders had pragmatic and broad in scope as ever. "You will go to the armory world Vraksoh and retrieve the armaments and vessels stored there, take the cruiser Kryptus's Tear and two hundred of your brothers for this endeavor is crucial to our prolonged survival."

The mission had failed before it had truly begun, upon entering the planets upper atmosphere the cruiser had come under a sudden and brutal attack. The engines had been crippled and the Kryptus had plummeted into the atmosphere of the world smashing through its diseased mountains and spilling its guts over the polluted plains.

Then the wolves had fallen upon them...

"Hold the line!" Nachtfel bellowed as the wolves surged towards him, to the left a squad of terminators advanced under the covering fire of their long fang brothers. To his right a pack of the wolves veterans and the patrols commander were barely being held at bay by the firepower of his iron havocs and tactical squad Alpha. The thwoosh of a missile sounded the advance of the dreadnought Luzan. The machine roared in triumph as the missile blew a terminator to bits, he machines roars were soon cut short as the remainder of terminators swarmed the mighty machine. One was crushed under foot but then the chainfist struck, brother Luzan exploded catastrophically and the shockwave blew Nachtfel to the ground. Pulling himself up he saw the trio of terminators come under a torrent of bolter fire, their forms juddered and within seconds all three had fallen. Glancing to his right he saw the last of squad Alpha cut down. Roaring a challenge he and the surviving members of squad Beta rushed in their blades drawn. Above him perched upon the hill the iron havocs shredded the last of the long fangs in a blistering salvo of heavy bolter shells. The whirling melee gave little chance to show skill at arms, the brutal overpowering number of iron warrior legionnaires quickly pulled down the last of the wolf veterans leaving only the lord standing. "Hold your arms brother! We are loyal to the Emperor and the Aquila." Nachtfel knew as he said the words that the wolf lord would pay them no heed, not now, not with his men dying at his feet. As was expected the wolf lord attacked swinging his ice like blade cutting down three members of Beta before they could react, Nachtfel swung his own blade barely driving the lord back giving the two remaining members of beta a chance to jam their blades into the lords armour. Roaring in pain the lord spun his blade ripping the legionnaires apart. Nachtfel drove his sword straight and true into the lords back piercing the back of his torso. Quick as a snake the wolf lord twisted bringing his blade upwards in an arc. Nachtfel wrenched his sword down in an attempt to block. His blade shattered, he felt a sudden draft of acidic air begin to chew on his torso. The collapse was prolonged and agonizing, his breastplate had be split, a gouge taken out of it as the wolf lord had rammed his blade upwards through his torso. Dimly he saw the lord charging the iron havocs as they frantically poured fire into the approaching figure, the last thing he saw before the pain caused him to black out was the wolf lord falling as the wall of fire punched him into the ground.
