Recently did this in between working on Aztec land speeders and other commercial jobs. Good practice for my sculpting, which although still fairly poor is getting better. Quite pleased with the hammer.

Captain Mal Bann, Deathwing Master of the First Legion

A Terran veteran, Captain Mal Bann earned the rather inglorious sobriquet of 'Mal the Bastard' in the closing stages of the Unification of Terra. The newly formed First Legion had been deployed to the Northern Conclaves of the PanPacific Empire to support the wider Imperial Army. Still few in numbers at this early stage, small teams of Legionnaires were deployed behind enemy lines to conduct 'butcher and bolt' operations against vital enemy positions. This in turn would put pressure on the Conclave rulers to come to terms with the Emperor's vision of Unity. The destruction the newly formed Legion wrought terrified the Conclave into suing for peace for fear of their imminent extinction at the hands of Emperor's newest genhanced warriors. As Conclave emissaries began to arrange talks with their Imperial Army counterparts, large numbers of troops were stood down.

Then Legionary Bann, having orders to attack Conclave infrastructure under his own recognisance until receiving vox orders of enemy surrender, took advantage of the situation. Conclave troops, weary of the one-sided campaign and glad to merely survive with their lives in the face of the Legion, were butchered unawares by Bann and his squad. Despite being only hours away from being Unified under the Emperor's flag, Bann carried on slaughtering the broken soldiers of the Conclave until their rulers' surrender was officially declared.

Upon returning to Imperial lines, Bann's unwholesome tactics were met with disgust by Imperial commanders. One loudly proclaimed Bann as an 'evil bastard without honour' - which must have taken considerable courage in the face of the newly forged Legion - and the name stuck. Bann's only response was that his honour was his duty, no matter how distasteful, and if the pressure maintained by his continued attacks brought Unity more quickly then his duty was done.

This distasteful reputation would mark Bann's career and did not make him popular with other Imperial forces as the Great Crusade launched and went on. Bann, however, was never marked for censure and, indeed, was recognised for his courage in executing his duty no matter the cost on a number of occasions.

Bann rose to the rank of Captain, or Master, in the First Legion's Order of the Deathwing by the time of the Horus Heresy. Whilst never a favourite of the Lion's, 'Mal the Bastard' was considered an effective commander and was trusted with winning a number of important campaign's during the Thramas Crusade.

His ultimate fate is unknown and, post the Scouring, no records of his service remain.
