Ulrik_Ironfist
So, I'm trying to figure out what direction I want my guard army to take. I have: Commmissar Yarrick Commissar CCS 1x 5 man Kasrkin squad w/banner 3x 10 man Kasrkin Squads 1x MTCS 3x 8 man MT squads 1PCS 3x IS 2x Mortar Squads 1x HB squad 1x AC squad 1x ML Squad 1x Vet squad 2x PC Armored Sentinels 2x Valkyrie Vendetta Vulture Vanquisher Demolisher I also have a knight that I'll ally in when necessary. I know I want another Demolisher, because I run my armor out of IA1.2, the Armored Battlegroup list. I should pick up a LRBT for my Vanquisher's wingman, and I want a couple wyverns. I also want a Baneblade chassis. I'm also thinking I should pick up 2 more Taurox primes to round out the second MT platoon's transport. I have pretty much decided that I'm going to relegate my Valkyries, and Taurox primes to the one MT platoon that's light on bodies, and run them as a CAD from C:MT. That leaves me a ton of stuff to use, and I really don't even know where to begin. I'm not sure I know what I want my army to focus on, as I've really been trying to keep my lists around the 1850 mark. Help, before I end up with a ton of stuff I don't use! WarriorFish
Sounds like you've got a good immediate plan to me - some Wyverns and another couple of tanks will do you good. You've a great infantry contingent so armour would be the natural place to look next :) So I'd stick to your current new model plans and see how it goes/you feel and go from there. Whether it's looking at that Baneblade chassis or to something else there is much to chose from but also no need to do so far in advance :D Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/318841-what-regiment/#findComment-4293387 Share on other sites
Ulrik_Ironfist
I don't know what list best utilizes my models. C:MT Uses my Kasrkin well as MT Scions, while C:AM lets me do the same plus gaining Yarrick. On the other hand the ABG list gives me access to Russes as troops, as well as single Command tanks with Beasthunter Shells and coaxial guns. The beasthunter shells are really great since they can really screw up an MC, which I tend to face a lot (either my girlfriend playing my necrons, or my tau, and my friend who plays 'nids and Chaos). They can also drop armored vehicles too, which again I also see a lot. The ABG list lets me take my Kasrkin as Stormies, but I don't get Yarrick. Sure there's allies, I can ally in the ABG, but then there's the issue of How to use Yarrick and my Kasrkin. I have a platoon which I can take as vets. Would the Kasrkin be better used in Taurox primes, with Yarrick and then using the Chimeras for vets. The Problem is that no single army list seems to offer what I want. I also want to combine armor with my vulture and my sentinels, for a balanced combined arms force. WarriorFish
You can't always have your cake and eat it, but allies should cover you for the most part. Otherwise you'll just have to get more games in if you want to play with more army types ;) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/318841-what-regiment/#findComment-4299882 Share on other sites
duz_
The exception of tournament or play testing for tournaments I rarely ever play the same list twice With scions if Im taking one squad they'll be an elite selection for my AM any more than that I play them as their own detachment. The thing I enjoy about having more guard than I would want to field in a standard game is the variety I can come up with I guess the point of this is; you don't have to build one list and stick with it. Play test mix things up learn from experience and then change/adapt build and tactics. Sure it doesn't help you narrow down what to buy next but they don't call this plastic crack for nothing! I just bought another box of scions to bring my total up to 30 when I've never fielded more than 15... ;) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/318841-what-regiment/#findComment-4300295 Share on other sites
Truesight
Definitely 2 wyverns to start, they are so good it's criminal to not have 2. I'd consider more infantry as 3 squads seems a little light to me, but if you want all armour all the time then you can work with that. Have you considered Pask Punisher with Executioner squadmate? Ulrik_Ironfist
For whatever reason I don't like the Plasma tank, it's some bad rolls away from blowing itself up. As for the Punisher, it's a solid anti infantry tank, but I have plenty of ways to kill enemy infantry, what I don't have is good solid ways to kill armor and monstrous creatures, unless I use the ABG list from IA1, then it's command vanquishers with beasthunter shells all day long. I like the idea of using my tanks from the ABG list, so I get the fun toys, like Coaxial weapons, and specialty shells, to use against opponents. Then there's the commissar tank's Ld10 bubble that can make a world of difference to infantry. I'm planning on getting a second demolisher for a second troops choice ABG tank, since it's devastating, but short ranged it makes sense. As for using my Commissar Yarrick Model, I plan on just subbing him in as my commander in a DKoK list. He's a great model, and I love his rules, but DKoK seems to be the best way to run my kasrkin, since they just scream to be used as short ranged rapid deployment troops. I also plan on getting a 4th squad of Kasrkin at some point with a chimera to transport them, but first thing's first, a second demolisher and some battlefoam as a carrying case. Then I need To get more super heavy stuff, a second Knight and a baneblade would be nice. As well as a Second Vanquisher. WarriorFish
E Tenebrae Lux is a B&C wide painting competition where the noble and heroic Imperial Forces of the Guard, Sisters, Grey Knights and AdMech combine forces against the other, lesser, parts of the B&C to see who can paint the most models over a set period. It usually runs during the summer at some point. We've done rather well for our small relative size and produce some excellent work :) Last year Ulrik did very well, so the commissariat is expecting an even better display in 2016... ;) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/318841-what-regiment/#findComment-4301018 Share on other sites

Money and Work permitting of course. I plan on at least 2 Leman Russes and a Baneblade, maybe another Knight and some wyverns. Maybe some more Kasrkin and a chimera. WarriorFish
Without going too far astray, the ETL allows up to five vows for your chosen faction. Here's the previous year's Guard strategium. duz_
Given Pasks rules, in a punisher he is actually a really effective AT option He can even take on AV14 I agree with the executioner when I first started running it I would run it solo. It was hilarious watching it blow itself up first few games then that got old. Nos I only run one as pasks buddy. A highly effective tank if you can give it PE Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/318841-what-regiment/#findComment-4301317 Share on other sites

It was hilarious watching it blow itself up first few games then that got old. Nos I only run one as pasks buddy. A highly effective tank if you can give it PE I'm not disagreeing with you, I just find that pask doesn't quite fit my needs as well as the ABG Company Command Tank does. As for the Executioner, I can see why people like it, and I can understand its use, but when everything in your army has a job to do, the risk of it blowing itself up is too detrimental, especially when you're dropping 195 points on the thing, to really make it mean (plasma sponsons, dozer blade, and PMHeavy Stubber). At 1850 that's more than 10% of your army. While it's nowhere near the single cost of a land raider, land raiders don't tend to explode. I'd be pretty upset if 10% of my army just exploded itself. I really just like the the Demolisher, Vanquisher, and Battle Tank variants. The other variants just don't do it for me. Besides, I have armored sentinels for plasma cannons. Ulrik_Ironfist
So, with my army, I'm trying to do a combined arms approach, sort of a combination of armored/mech regiment, and drop regiment. I need some help to figure out how to get all of it into my lists. I found out that mechanized stormies don't really work, unless it's in their taurox primes. I've been toying with the idea of using D-99 to get better valkyries and vultures, as well as some decent troops, but I'm struggling to get everything into a single cohesive list. I wanted D-99 to be my Airborne component, with stormies being the bulk of my force, with a couple tanks and walkers supporting them. I'd be using Taurox primes to move 2 squads around the board capping objectives, while a third squad of stormies would be securing backfield objectives and killing anything that dropped in. I'd use the Combat drop rule to get my D-99 vets up the table and plunk them on a mid field objective, while my tanks take care of infantry and enemy armor. WarriorFish
With the D-99 airborne, going full ground pound with the Scions makes sense. Get lots of mounted squads and keep mobile and shooty, hopefully with the Elysians dropping in at the right time! Ulrik_Ironfist
The Elysians would be dropping in first turn, with the combat drop rule. I'd almost certainly prefer to have a solid infantry core. I'm going to see if I can make it work with Kreigers as a core. I've begun working on a D-99 based army list, because I like their fluff. Ulrik_Ironfist
D-99 vets come in 5 man squads as a minimum. I was thinking of using them as MSU heavy weapons fireteams. Heavy weapon team, special weapon trooper, and a vox-caster, and spam those as MSU's. I have also built an army list based on the D-99 list, pretty much renaming the inquisitor character, adding Elysian Stormtroopers, and adding in a Lord Commissar character. Aside from that, there are really no changes, and function very much the same as the basic D-99 list. I made some minor changes to make it a fluffy list, like having the LC move stormies from elites to troops, and I basically just renamed the command squad special character. I also gave the stormies the same preferred enemy mechanic that the rest of the D-99 detachment had, so that it wouldn't be unbalanced. Ulrik_Ironfist
So, I've done some thinking about how to run my lists, and the current list I have is this: 1850 points Commissar Yarrick Veteran Squad (2PG, Grenadiers, Vox, Krak Grenades, and a Chimera) x3 Infantry Platoon -PCS (Vox, 2GL, HF, Tallarn Desert Raiders) -Infantry Squad (Vox, GL, Tallarn Desert Raiders)x3 Armored sentinel Squadron -Armored Sentinel (Extra Armor, Plasma Cannon)x2 Vulture (TL Lascannon, 6HKM) Vulture (TL Multilaser, 2xMRP) Leman Russ (Extra Armor, Pintle Stubber)x2 Wyvern (Enclosed Crew compartment) Is there any regiment style that does all of this? Am I just a Cadian at heart? Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/318841-what-regiment/#findComment-4337613 Share on other sites
Emicus
Are those Vultures a Valkyrie and Vendetta? Otherwise you might consider getting 4 more Sentinels for the Formation. Preferred enemy against a unit of your choosing is pretty neat for Plasma Sentinels. Though I wouldn't take that configuration on all 6. march10k
Looks like we have a lot to look forward to Ulrik, I'm hoping you'll save the big stuff for the ETL Ooh...good point...starts in May? I'll hold off on the missile-primes (4x110 points, missiles and smoke) and 4 squads for my ground-pounding kasrkin till then...and maybe some MOAR TANKZZZ...sadly, what really needs painting is mobs of conscripts, but that's a terrible ETL pledge...500 hours later, you turn in...20 points worth of models Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/318841-what-regiment/#findComment-4337818 Share on other sites
WarriorFish
The ETL usually runs around Summer time, so save the tanks for then march.
