[WIP] Wuls XIIIth Legion Ultramarines

Recommended Posts

Hi all, I've had a thread over on heresy30k for a bit showing my WIP ultras force, and have now decided to bring over to the BnC! I had been making slow progress with the army for a while, but with the release of B@C last year it has really jump started me into finishing it (Is any army ever really finished? msn-wink.gif ). I don't have any fluff as of yet, but it is something I am working on and I have a few ideas swimming around in my head at the moment.

My current plan is to have the 2000 point list I have planned painted up and ready by April time, which I think is an okay goal. I will post the list up for any interested, however it is not super competitive as there is no Heresy scene where I am, and not much of a decent 40k scene either as far as I am aware. The joys of living in the countryside!

Anyway, without further ado I shall start posting some pics of what I have completed so far!!

This is the first painted mini so far, showing off the color scheme and effect I am going for. As you can see, I'm not a fantastic painter and I have never claimed to be one, but I hope as this army progresses, so shall my ability with a paintbrush!

This is the Praetor that I have converted up using Krom Dragongaze and various other bits.

A simple librarian conversion using the B@C chaplain.

And finally for now my favourite figure so far. I'm thinking about using this guy as a Legion Champion but not too sure yet. This is the first time I've played with magnets as I am slowly converting my own MK IV Suzerain counts as squad, but I want them to be magnetized so I can use them as other units if so desired.

I currently have a tactical sqaud, contemptor and cataphractii squad all currently drying from a glaze/wash, so once they are dry I will post them up as well, likely some time this afternoon!

Cheers for looking, James happy.png

That praetor is a nice kit bash, what sword has he got? Hard to see from the angles. And the suzerain though sorta steals the show :p Looks so cool just prowling the battlefield. Liking your scheme, the gold is particularly nice and it's good to see marines battered up too. Looking forward to seeing that Suzerain go blue.

Many thanks for the comments!!

The sword is from the Red Scorpion Vanguard kit: https://www.forgeworld.co.uk/en-AU/Red-Scorpions-Vanguard-Veteran-Upgrade-Set

Here are a few more pics as promised!

I have a black primed Veteran squad, and another tactical squad to "blue up" yet.

And I'm currently waiting on some boarding shields from FW for my suzerain conversion which are mostly built, but I'll post these up once the shields have arrived.

Cheers for looking, James!

Thank you for the comments!

Im glad you like the paint scheme, I will be honest and say I have stolen it from here: http://battlebunnies.blogspot.co.uk/2015/07/kaelo-pre-heresy-ultramarine-paints.html?m=1

I have modified it slightly, making the gold a bit darker, adding battle damage and just a few other little bits. Being a bit of an amateur painter I have to borrow schemes as I dont have the ability to make them myself!

In other news my boarding shield upgrade set has arrived so expect the Suzerain conversions to be posted up within the next few days. I have also ordered their LR transport this morning, so that should arrive within the next day or two as Element Games have incredible fast delivery.

Many thanks for looking, and I hope to have a few more updates to show you shortly!

James

Apologies for the double post but I have a small update.

First of all my Land Raider arrived in good time so will start building that up within the next few days. Now for the more interesting bit (in my opinion msn-wink.gif ), my boarding shields arrived from FW and so I set about converting my Suzerain counts as! This is where they stand now, all shields are magnetized and the two with gladii and the guy without a right hand are all magnetized so that I can swap between Gladii or Legatine Axes depending upon whether my opponent is uptight about WYSIYG regarding the Legatine axes. The bloke with no right arm is waiting on a banner I have yet to order!

Thanks for looking, James

Never mentioned how much I like the pose of the Praetor. And the efforts into making multi-purpose-Marines are commendable. Nuts, but commendable laugh.png

Cheers! The marines are magnetized mainly due to fluff reasons, in my head they are the Veteran squad that my captain is most often accompanied by, and therefore if one day I felt the need to not use them as Suzerains, I can run them as something else!

I've been painting a few more marines, and also started building my land raider, but ran out of glue half way through so will need to go out and get some more!

These are what I've painted so far!

And a group shot of the pathetic amount I've finished so far! tongue.png

I've also been working on some fluff for my marines. The theme I am going for stems from the germanic peoples that the Romans encountered during their time, some of which actually ended up living alongside the Romans and also fighting for them as Auxiliary forces. With the Ultramarines obviously being based upon the Romans I'm surprised I hadn't seen something similar done before, but I'm really interested in the Germanic peoples and so I have set about doing it. The obvious thing I'm going for are Ultramarines that are more barbaric in nature compared to those that come from Macragge and Calth etc.

And so here is the first bit of background/fluff! As you can see, I'm no great writer but I try my best. happy.png

Wotan, a harsh planet located on the fringes of the Ultramar sector. A forest world of bitter winters and humid summers, it was home to various tribes and families. Pale of skin and dark of hair, the people of Wotan were hardy, and warlike by nature. Feuds between the tribes were commonplace before the arrival of the Ultramarines, many having ended in battle and bloodshed. A garrison of the XIIIth Legion had been present on Wotan for many years, not long after Guilliman had taken command of the Legion. This garrison was comprised of members of the 132nd company, and usually numbered 200 Astartes at most, a fraction of the company. It was not uncommon to see higher-ranked legionaries accompanied by large hounds, many a gift from the people of Wotan, whose love for hounds and hunting in the wilds was second to none. Due to the lengthy time spent garrisoned there, many of the 132nd originated from Wotan themselves, and those that werent had accepted the culture into their being. Legionaries openly displayed small tribal fetishes such as runes and animal teeth, a custom among the tribespeople. Many grew thick beards, and had unkempt hair, a stark contrast to the regal blue and gold of their battle plate. These practices lead them to being shunned, and to be described as savages by many within the legion.

Many thanks for looking, comments/criticism is greatly appreciated!

  • 2 weeks later...

So.... Its been over two weeks since my last update and I've hardly made any progress so far.

The Land Raider came, and it has since been built. No pics however because it is pretty much just a standard LR, not very interesting.

I just find I am having trouble knuckling down and painting, I find it very daunting I'm not sure why. Everything in the Army is basecoated blue pretty much but thats about as far as I am with the painting. The army is pretty much bought, built and basecoated aside from three rhinos and a leviathan dread that I am yet to buy!

However, I do have a small update to show. When images of Deathwatch were first leaked and I saw the cassius figure, I knew I needed it in my life. And so, with Cassius arriving today, I browsed my bits box and set to work.

And so I present to you the newest marine to my collection:

What he is meant to be I'm not sure, I seem to build things I think look cool and then spend hours trying to figure what to actually use him as. Currently I am toying with the idea of making a kill-team of sorts, and he would be the leader. I've always loved the idea of kill-teams, and so I think it could work!

Many thanks for looking!

Apologies for the long delay in updates!
You know how things are, life gets in the way, lose interest etc...

Anyway, I'm back! Not a great deal has happened since I last posted, however I have made some purchases. I scrapped the counts-as suzerains guys and just decided to bite the bullet and buy the real thing, after seeing a squad on ebay, managed to grab them for £45, bargain! I've also bought a Sicaran, which was despatched from FW yesterday so should be here within a week hopefully! The last thing I've ordered was some Attack bikes, just to fill a small gap in my planned army list with a bit of extra AT.

Anyway, thought I would take a pic of the army as it currently stands!http://i.imgur.com/wCCp7cy.jpg?1

The dude in the bottom left is my new vigilator that I have converted. I love the fluff for Vigilators so decided I wanted to have one, whether he's any good on the table remains to be seen but I like him!
Heres a close-up, still need to greenstuff a strap for his bolter!

Three rhinos will finalize the army to 2000 points, but I'm putting it off because I really dislike the thought of paying so much money for what is essentially three little boxes worth 35 points each.  :(

Heres my 2000 point list for anyone that is interested:

+ HQ (775pts) +

Legion Centurion (125pts) [Artificer Armour, Melta Bombs, Power Weapon, Refractor Field]

+ Troops (430pts) +

Legion Tactical Squad (215pts) [Legion Rhino Armoured Carrier, 9x Legion Tactical Space Marines]
····Legion Tactical Sergeant [Artificer Armour, Melta Bombs, Power Fist]

Legion Tactical Squad (215pts) [Legion Rhino Armoured Carrier, 9x Legion Tactical Space Marines]

Many thanks for the likes + comments, its greatly appreciated!

Finally managed to get around to painting some more marines, so the total so far is 5 guys painted (still require transfers though!!)

And this beauty arrived in the post yesterday, so been piecing it together these past two days slowly.

I'm also not keen on the original fluff for my company with them representing the Germanic auxiliaries of the Roman Empire. The only real way I could really portray them as such would be with bare SW heads etc but I'm really not keen on both the heads, and marines without helmets. I'm currently thinking about rewriting them into a majority terran veteran company that feels Gulliman has given up with the original imperium after he announces imperium secundus. Any thoughts on this would be fantastic!!

As usual, thank you for looking, and I hope to get some more updates in soon, and to figure out a better photography set up.

James

Cheers!

No update today but a question. Ive got 30 resin MK IV and 5 resin Cataphractii from a previous project that need stripping.

I can't decide between adding them to my ultras as 10 man choom squad, 10 man breachers and 10 of something else, or starting a small blackshield project?

Thoughts on this would be appreciated!! James
