Jarl Kjaran Coldheart
As a Wolf player of 16 years, it's not the worse release from BL but it's far from the best. Bolter porn would be a fair description Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/320623-the-lost-king/page/3/#findComment-4414021 Share on other sites
Apothecary Vaddon
Well I think a huge part of the problem is that it's serialized. idk if it'll have more or less bolter porn than previous novels we've seen but it'd be easier to judge if we had the whole novel Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/320623-the-lost-king/page/3/#findComment-4414024 Share on other sites
DarkChaplain
I'd say that the reliance on action scenes really is down to the serialization format. It was the same with what I read of The Black Rift of Klaxus and the Legends of the Dark Millennium: Space Wolves stories. Every piece had to contain a big action setpiece. They're trying too hard to keep the reader's attention that they're pushing out what makes people interested. The Darkness of Angels, for example, the 5th of the 8 Space Wolves stories, was set entirely in a Dark Eldar arena in Commoragh, with Krom fighting more and more stuff. The previous part at least had some developments on the side and through the battles, but that one was pure action with very little going on. In most straight up novels, you'd have a few battles or smaller engagements along the way and one big climax, and can actually build things up and ramp up the stakes, because you can actually afford the downtime. It is fine to take one or two chapters in succession, out of 20-30, to do something calm and composed, but when you only have 8 pieces to work with and don't get to denote chapters because every piece is supposed to also work as a standalone short story without the rest, things turn to dreck quickly. That being said, I have disagreed with Heritor before on what I'd classify as Bolter Porn, and haven't read this series properly myself yet. I'll reserve judgement until I do. HeritorA
I better took 1 story in months, then that bolter-porn, daemon sludge abomination which is Wulfen and SW subscription wow. I'm about to start the series. Is it that it seems to you like mindless bolter porn or does it attempt (fail?) at character development? All critiques are welcome but since this one has such a strong reaction I'm just curious, that's all. thx It is horrible written. Prose is very bad- I know that it's not Wraight or Abnett, but it's a fanfic, not a BL level. It is mindless porn about Space Wolves vs daemons - chop chop slash slash etc.etc. Inquisition and DA are just brainless clones at background. Just to have something in story, except for the unkillable space puppies.
