Jolemai
I'm sorry to report that the final Griffon has rolled off the production line as the Vanaheim-pattern Griffon is no longer available. I started the game during the second edition and recall seeing lots of Griffons back then in stores and various promotional articles, so to me this is a shame to see :( I know they became obsolete a while ago due to competition from elsewhere but did/do any of you use these little gems? Guilloom
I plan to convert at least to Chimera into Griffons due to how expensive they are on FW. They might not be competitive, but they look great, like every heavy mortar on tracks actually. Formerly Wu
That's a shame. I'm hoping a plastic Griffon/Salamander combo kit is on the horizon from GW- it would satisfy their current trend towards classic kit revivals. RADU LYKAN
the only problem with that is to make people buy it when it competes with the wyvern, unless it gets even more powerful rules or the wyvern gets toned down i am not sure how well it will sell? WarriorFish
The Griffon has been gone for a long time in practical terms Gone but not forgotten, I'd like to imagine GW will replace it with a plastic one but with the Wyvern I can't see it happening. Akrim
Absolutely, great little artillery tank back in the day. Mine has been in the armoury storage for many years now though Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/321577-griffon-no-more/#findComment-4368947 Share on other sites
Formerly Wu
I feel like a toned-down Wyvern and a slightly buffed Griffon could fill different roles. Perhaps give the Griffon specialist shells- Blinding shells, Concussive shells, poison gas shells. Even if it's not particularly impressive though, if it shares a nice combo kit it'll still see sales. Cap'm Heckus
My most fond memory of the griffin was in 2nd edition. It used "guess range" rules and I called the exact distance with a melta shell and dropped it right on the named space wolf chaplain's head killing him out right in turn 1. Good times. Toxichobbit
I love the Griffon, even if it has no practical use in games. I feel sad that they're gone and I still don't own one, might have to scour eBay for one now. Tallarn Commander
The griffon (and hellhound) were the first 2 IG tanks I ever used. I used it less and less frequently over the years. However, when the 2009 IG codex gave our griffons the light artillery re-roll I went back to using them quite a bit. Sadly, as you all note, when the 2014 codex came out the wyvern was far superior. So I ripped off the heavy mortars off my 2 Griffons and replaced them with counts-as wyvern stormshard mortars (photo below). Sign of the times I guess. http://i1066.photobucket.com/albums/u420/tallarncommander1/Mobile%20Uploads/20150904_145647.jpg Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/321577-griffon-no-more/#findComment-4370991 Share on other sites
WarriorFish
Using Griffon's and their special rule to spot for the Bassies in the squadron... good times. I'd not have changed them at all Tallarn, just said "this is a stormshard mortar now" and carried on  Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/321577-griffon-no-more/#findComment-4371021 Share on other sites
march10k
Yup, I use them as wyverns whenever I use them at all (rarely), using the elevated targeting optic for (two-way) LOS, it's about the same height as the top of a wyvern.
