Red Butchers 'Raving Madmen' rule

The text for this rule uses the phrase "hits them" with "them" referring to the red butchers when it describes that everyone hits them on 3s regardless of weapon skill. In a mixed unit, say Khârn and an apothecary are with them, any idea how that works? Majority weapon skill in the unit was 5 but you hit "them" on 3s. We ended up splitting the rolls so those in base contact with the butchers hit on 3s and those in base contact with Khârn and the apothecary hit against thier WS as normal.

If it said 'A unit with this rule is always hit on a 3+' then Khârn would be affected.

 

But as it says 'them' it's just the Red Butchers that are affected.

 

In close combat when an enemy attacks your unit you get to pick which of your models are attacked, but I think that's after rolling To-Hit.

 

If Khârn is in a challenge then he's somewhat seperate, which avoids working this out haha.

Ya, on a combat you get to chose how wounds are allocated so that is after the to hit rolls.  Khârn had murdered his way through the character in the unit so he was out of a challenge, which is actually what prompted the question.

It would go on the majority unit.

 

If the combat involved 10 Red Butchers and Khârn, and no challenges, the Red Butcher unit will be getting hit on 3s.

That makes sense. I think by the time Khârn got out of the challenges I was only down to two butchers, Khârn, and Surlak so I guess at that point the hits would be normal rather than 3s.
