Commissar Ibram Gaunt
Beatiful yellow. What is the recipe if you wouldn't mind sharing? Somerandomidiot
Sure, it's pretty simple. I start with a gray primer, then basecoat the yellow areas in Averland Sunset. Once that's dry, I wash the whole thing in Reikland Fleshshade. When it dries, I block back in the large areas with Averland Sunset, leaving the wash in the shadows. I then mix a 50/50 Averland Sunset/Flash Gitz Yellow and apply it to most of the area that I hit with Averland Sunset, then I do another highlight with 25/70 of the same colors. My final line highlights are with Flash Gitz Yellow, and then on the very highest points (usually the helmet) I'll do some point highlights with 50/50 Flash Gitz Yellow and PP's Menoth White Highlight. On the advice of a friend who's an excellent artist I'm going to try a light orange glaze with Fuegan Orange along the edge of the shadow to bring some more warmth to the scheme, I'll report in on how that works out. Your idea of simple and mine are vastly different it seems. Looking good though. In any case, my secret is to mix versions of each of my paints, so I have a pot of 50/50 and a pot of 25/75. I still end up using a wet pallet, but it saves me from mixing on the fly. Major_Gilbear
Really grwat minis there, well done! I am quite in love with the idea of that giant Choom squad too! :D On the advice of a friend who's an excellent artist I'm going to try a light orange glaze with Fuegan Orange along the edge of the shadow to bring some more warmth to the scheme, I'll report in on how that works out. You know the yellow and bown shading is already warm, right? If you want to add more interest to the shadows, I would suggest glazing a very small amount of purple (old GW Liche Purple, or P3 Beaten Purple) to the deepest parts. The purple is a relatively cool colour compared to the yellow and will make the shading look deeper and richer. The improved contrast with the yellow will make the yellow seem warmer and stand out more. :) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/323337-sons-of-dorn-vii-legion-blog-now-with-100-more-volkite/page/2/#findComment-4447207 Share on other sites

You're correct- what I should've said was that I'm going to use the orange to extend the shade a bit, so I have more color movement on the armor plates. I do like the idea of some purple in the shadows though. Yes it would work, although be aware that because the ink is more transparent than the paint, you will likely get a more "brown" than "purple" result. :) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/323337-sons-of-dorn-vii-legion-blog-now-with-100-more-volkite/page/2/#findComment-4448467 Share on other sites
Somerandomidiot
It's been a while since I posted anything, so I figured I should include my latest work. Unfortunately I've been distracted by another legion... I love painting red, so I figured Blood Angels would be a fun scheme to work with. Neither of the painted models are finished, but the assault marine is much closer. Also pictured is my Moritat conversion, because that new Cypher model is absolutely amazing and characterful.
