Red Talons WIP - 40k Morragul Clan Successors

Hello, I'll be doing a small force of fluffy Red Talons. It may be a gamble to do a 40k force of them now depending on whether Forge World really goes ham on expanding Clan Morragul's lore in 30k in the future, but it's a gentle way of easing me back into the saddle of painting - my eventual big goal being comfortable enough painting to do a full 30k Word Bearer army (my favourite 30/40k faction ever).

It was a toss up whether to choose between Crimson Fists (extremely wide Forge World/GW range to customize with, great colour scheme but 0 fluff interest), Minotaurs (adore the fluff) and the Talons - of whom I also love, my taste steers toward morally ambiguous characters. Also dropping a moon on a World Eaters' recruiting planet, blowing up "liberated" Gethsamaine cities and in general being too unstable and eccentric for even Ferrus. But I went with my gut and here I am now painting Autek Mor's great clan. They're also a bit rare and obscure, which is a plus for me. Being Iron Hands descendants I'll be mixing in hopefully lots of augmetics and cyborg-y bits, with a good range of Heresy-era MKs cannibalized to suit a Second Founding chapter.

Here are the first 2 I've done, more will come:

Thanks. I'm thinking the Iron Hands FW Legion transfer sheet should do for now. Any bigger models like vehicles that will need big Red Talon symbology stuck on I'll get round to making stencils for.

Great start and lovely painting! Really nice and crisp work that's always a pleasure to see. :)

In fact, the only suggestion I have is to perhaps consider the bases a bit more... I feel that the blue-grey drybrushed sand looks rather lower-quality work than the models on them. What effect/terrain were you going for?

Sorry for the wait. I'm far too leisurely with production, two more tacticals done.

Thank you. Yeah, the GW texture bases are bland an unimpressive - I'd figure I'd focus on just practicing my model-painting rather than go full bore into every detail. Ice-world is the idea, vague and basic. For my next project I'll definitely take up on doing proper greenstuff'd tile flooring and intricate base-work rather than slapping on default GW stuff. Thanks for the critique.

Dude! That is some impressively neat paint work. Really great stuff :tu:

The only critique I have is that the bases don't really live up to the excellent quality of the minis. If you want to go basic and easy to do, desert bases would probably look better and be easier to do.

Looking forward to seeing some more :)

Not to hijack your thread, Qadash, but I've been thinking about what chapter to play, and one thing I was bandying around was playing a Fist of Medusa with an Allied Detachment of Flesh Tearers. Maybe Red Talons could work as one chapter doing a combination of both - marines who've kept rigid and logical in line with their forebears, and a contingent of unhinged marines consumed by Ferrus Manus' rage.

Also I wanted to subscribe to see more cool minis. Nice paintwork, very crisp!
