TG's Deathwatch Plog

Hello brothers. My Long Vigil has begun. I don't have much to share but the start of a Librarian in Terminator Armor:

I apologize if the picture is no too great, as I find an almost black miniature very difficult to photograph.

Currently I have three kill team boxes, one vanguard box, a black star, and the Kill Team Casius box to get me going.

I will update as I have something meaningful to share. Please feel free to offer help and advice. I appreciate it.

For those who care, the armor is Vallejo black primer, then a cost of Abbadon Black. Then I airbrushed the the highlights with Tamiys German gray. Then a glaze of 50/50 Nuln Oil and Lahmian Medium. I still have an edge highlight of Fenrisian grey to go.

I've long enjoyed the Deathwatch background material, and I intend on making this a as characterful army as I can.

Thanks for looking.

Will

welcome aboard Thunder,

I,like you have really liked the deathwatch fluff and look ever since i saw that index asartes pic in the old white dwarf wub.png

i'm really going to try similar and make each model as characterful as possible...see Vash's plog in this forum for some very nice individual models

Look forward to seeing more of your work!.

cheers, Mithril

p.s when you photograph the model put a coloured piece of paper in the background to bring out the black msn-wink.gif

Off to a great start! I'll second the coloured paper tip (I like white paper myself) and add that lighting is huge too. Turn off the flash (unless you want to take pics outside) and get a soft white light as straight on with the model as you can (it helps with shadows). In either case, I'm looking forward to seeing more! happy.png

I'm still struggling with the pictures, but I'm getting there. Thanks for the feedback on improving my images. My basement needs better light all the way around.

I got a bit done tonight. I've decided against the line highlight, as I just don't care for it. Looks good in Duncan's Warhammer TV tutorial, but it's just not me. When I tackle my squad for my vow, I think I'll airbrush an additional lighter highlight.

Here's tonight's update:

I still have a bit of clean up and details to finish. Overall, I'm pleased. This is the most complex mini I have painted in a long while. It's making learn new things.

And yes, I did go old school on the yellow & black warning stripes on the cable! It needs a little cleaning up, but it's a nod to days gone by. I just may have to do an Ultramarines army in 2nd ed colors one day, but that's for a different blog!

Later.

Ok, did something I've always wanted to try but never have before: my librarian has glowing eyes.

It's not the bolder representation of the effect, but it works for me. To be honest I was a little afraid of painting over a face I had labored so much on to reach a serviceable result, but I like it.

Also, here are the unopened boxes for my Vow:

A Kill Team & a Corvus Blackstar

Great stuff,

i fully understand the "Do i Paint over this finely done face that i have here with a new untried techniqueohmy.png "

Thankfully your bold commitment has paid off cool.png , well done. i do like your golds...very rich and nicely contrasting on the red pad thumbsup.gif

OOOh the new goodies you have make me jealous drool.gif i want to see a corvus done by someone here and not just GW's version (B&C Frater always seem to have better paint jobs than GW most times)

Get Painting Man!!!

Mithril

Thank you Vel.

This guy is getting closer to being done. Just odds and ends to go.

As soon as he's finished I'll be moving on to the Veteran Squad for my vow.

Wow. Looking great, and it shows off the model nicely. Some people dislike the glowy eye thing and maybe sometimes people go too far with it, but I love how you've done. I only had the guts to do it once to one of my Grey Knight Libbies. I think you pulled it off nicely.

Yes, the background is awesome for the army. I just started up the latest novel last night. :)

Looking good mate.
The gold is looking sweet.

For the base I could recommend the technical paint Agrellan Earth. But it requires some previous experience to get it right. The layer/thickness is the key part of that kind of technical paint.

The new scenic bases I am using my self. Wasn't to impressed with the 32mm bases, compared to the the 25mm and 40mm. But once I got 5 models up and ready standing next to each other in a unit, it started to look much better even with the 32mm.

Update time:

First a group portrait of the 5 man kill team for my vow:

3 are built and 2 to go.

And one of the Librarian, almost finished

And now for a bit of a rant. As I have been building these guys, I have realized you were very limited with poses and what you can do with their arms. You really have to start mixing and matching with other marine kid and now for a bit of a rant. As I have been building these guys, I have realized you were very limited with poses and what you can do with their arms. You really have to start mixing and matching with other marine kits if you want to have them in the traditional space Marines firing pose. And when you do that do you miss out on the cool bio cuff and the deathwatch emblem on the other arm at the elbow. The inclusion of a few set of arms holding the bolter in the classic space Marine pose would have been wonderful.

Ok, rant over.

I should have the last guy is finished in the next day or so and then we can begin with painting.

Looking great mate!

I hear you with the limited poses, specially with the arms.

Had to combine them with other marine boxes. And since I dont play Marines otherwise, I had to invest in some extra boxes.

The Sternguard veteran box adds a lot of options. More combo-weapons and heavy weapons not included in the Deathwatch box.

The breast plates and bits really works good with the Deathwatch kit. And you also get some guys holding the bolter with two hands!

The baby's napping so I snagged a little modeling time!

Here's the last two veterans for the squad:

I've added the chest straps to the second marine after I snapped the photo. He also has the auspex now. Later tonight I'll go over them looking got missed seams and lines, then get them into the spray booth.
