Nomus Sardauk
Hail and well met Apologist! We welcome thee to this Brotherhood of the Lost and Forgotten, of legends and nightmares that never were. Abandon all logic and reason, for only madness shall ye find in this place. Enjoy your stay. http://image.bolterandchainsword.com//public/style_emoticons/default/msn-wink.gif Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/325302-art-modelling-the-brotherhood-of-the-lost/page/2/#findComment-4484737 Share on other sites
bluntblade
My personal preference would be Grave Stalkers first, then the Scions. I still struggle to visualise their armour a little, and I'd also just love to see them rendered in resin and paint. Sigismund229
It could just be because I wrote a lot of their fluff but I actually have a fairly strong image in my mind of the Grave Stalkers Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/325302-art-modelling-the-brotherhood-of-the-lost/page/2/#findComment-4485248 Share on other sites
Grifftofer
Just looked at a preview of the model from Apologist. He looks great. The only downside is that I'm feeling tempted to attempt some truescale models myself in the future. apologist
Okay, thumbs-up from Grifftofer, so here's the basic model. I'm aiming to paint him tonight: + Legionary Ahluic Xbalanque of the Grave Stalkers + The result takes some inspiration from pop culture Vietnam – traumatised soldiers doing abominable things – mixed in with a bit of Predator and a hint of Boba Fett – both feared trophy hunters. There's a more complete write-up on Death of a Rubricist, but I hope you like him. Kelborn
I already got me with Predator and Boba Fett but the mini is really awesome! Can't wait for the first mini of my Legion as they as well are influenced by the Predators. ;) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/325302-art-modelling-the-brotherhood-of-the-lost/page/2/#findComment-4485276 Share on other sites

apologist
Fantastic work – lovely and dynamic. :) On a general note, I find creating models a great way to explore the background of a force, so I'd encourage anyone who has any figures to post them somewhere. This thread seems as good a place as any, unless there's somewhere more appropriate. +++ Grave Stalker I'm looking forward to getting to grips with painting the Grave Stalker. I've got a couple of questions on specifics: 1) Does the faceplate being a different colour symbolise anything, or is it purely decorative? 2) My impression is that the Grave Stalkers would appear relatively battle-scarred and weathered – correct? 3) The main colour is a matt grey. Is it a flat, neutral grey, or a cool grey? 4) Are you happy for me to pick an accent colour? +++ Drowned From the sounds of things, these are the other Legion that doesn't have any models yet, so if the muse strikes, I'll start on these chaps next. The following would be helpful :) * Thumbs-up from the creator (whose are these?) * Colour scheme (MikhalLeNoir's image is very useful, so I can use that if necessary)* Legion symbol* Relevant logos or markings* Notes on particular things to bear in mind – e.g. 'the Legion generally uses Mark [X] armour, and never uses Mark [Y]. They tend to favour [X] boltgun.' * General 'real-world' theme (if applicable) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/325302-art-modelling-the-brotherhood-of-the-lost/page/2/#findComment-4485359 Share on other sites
bluntblade
HeshKadesh is the man for The Drowned. He can be hard to get hold of but he'll probably be keen, and the colour scheme is on his avatar. They're inspired by the Ironborn in GoT. Having been the preeminent underwater fighters before the Scions Hospitalier came into their own, they're now general hostile environment specialists. This might just be my impression, but I believe they favour heavier marks of armour in contrast to the Scions. As for their aesthetic, Hesh put a lot of detail in this page and explains it better than I could: http://www.bolterandchainsword.com/topic/312574-brotherhood-of-the-lost-the-drowned/page-4 Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/325302-art-modelling-the-brotherhood-of-the-lost/page/2/#findComment-4485369 Share on other sites

Grifftofer
I can cover the Grave Stalkers. The bone coloured faceplate was initially from a limitation of the various army painters. I had thoughts of a skull motif (possibly in a tribal tattoo style) being painted on there, but didn't want to overlap with the Night Lords too much and finding an appropriate image proved quite tricky. So at the moment that has has been put aside to possibly be considered again in the future. So it is mostly a decorative thing at the moment. Battle scarred and weathered is how I would categorise them too. The exact tone for the grey has proved elusive. I know that I envision it as a somewhat 'ethereal' colour and that it should fall in between the Lightning Bearers' 'off-white' and the Space Wolves. Administratum Grey would probably be my chosen base layer with highlights and shading spreading from that. Feel free to pick an accent. Sigismund229
In their fluff, the pre K'awil XVth, th Phantoms, used to paint their faces to resemble skulls and fught helmless in order to take full advantage of how unnerving normal humans would find their appearance. Perhaps the bone white could be a homage to that? ~Drakzilla~
Hey Apologist, I know that you're a GOD when it comes to freehand, but here's a simplified verion of the Grave Stalkers symbol I made that may be easier to paint on a shoulder pad: https://www.dropbox.com/s/8xlrr1ubpy0rrgn/Grave%20Stalkers.pdf?dl=0 And here's one for the Drowned: https://www.dropbox.com/s/yx1dqcrrybfmjtl/The%20Drowned.pdf?dl=0 ^That one's still gonna be a pain in the neck to freehand, but if anyone can do it, it's you. apologist
Very kind of you, but let's not go too far – I'm a journeyman painter at best; just wanted to help out if I can :) That's a great resource; thanks for the heads-up. apologist
+ Legionary Ahluic Xbalanque + Any man's death diminishes me, because I am involved in mankind, and therefore never send to know for whom the bells tolls; it tolls for thee. + John Donne + +++ Bone and grey are two light-toned colours that caused a little consternation when I tried to use them in combination – low contrast schemes tend to lack impact. To offset this and create some visual interest, I included some deep metallics, rich shading and incorporated deep red as an accent colour. Red was already used in the Legion symbol, so it made sense to extend across the armour in places. Sepia ink was also used to add depth and a hint of dirtiness – the Grave Stalkers look after their equipment, but are resupplied infrequently. I wanted to reflect this by having them look a little battered. This marine was an exercise in freehand detailing to create more of a sense of shape to the very pale, plain silhouette. I took some inspiration from Mayan border designs to add red markings across plates of the armour – most noticably on the torso and shoulder pad here. The faceplate has a skull honorific – as I understand things, the bone faceplate of the Legion is intended to reflect an old practise of using warpaint. I decided this marine would be a veteran (perhaps a Seeker specialist?) and developed the colour into a specific marking. Hope that's alright. If not, I'm happy to repaint it in a more plain manner. The Mayans also provided the inspiration for the squad symbol I added to the left forearm – this is a numeral for 13. Grifftofer suggested that the Grave Stalkers would duplicate their Legion symbol over their primary heart (the left side of the chest), which was an enjoyable challenge. It's quite an intricate design, but a clenched fist is so iconic that it still reads well at a small size. The figure was still looking a bit muted at this point, and the trophy decorations (skulls and bones) weren't helping matters, as the bone white blended in with the rest of the figure. I had a brainwave and decided to try them in the red accent colour – perhaps they are ceremonially dipped in red ochre, painted or otherwise coloured as part of a lodge ritual? I like the tribalistic feel (and hope you do too) – it gives a hint at the Mesoamerican influences without going all-in; and remains feeling more 'Space Marine' than anything else. +++ Anyway, hope you like him. He was an enjoyable diversion from my main projects – thanks for the invitation and opportunity. I love the red accents and darker metal that you've used. And all the freehand stuff you've done looks absolutely fantastic. Soldier of Dorn
Found my way over here from the thread Apologist posted in the Hall of Honor, and just wanted to say that the work and thought you've put into these Legions and this setting is absolutely stupendous, even though I haven't even scratched the surface yet. I'm very tempted now to do an army hailing from the Grave Stalkers, but I want to familiarize myself a bit more with the background of the setting a bit more before I do anything, so you can expect to see me much more around this area of the forum, asking questions and commenting. ++Edited because it's 2:15 in the morning and I'm writing sentences with reversed grammar as a result.++ Edited September 1, 2016 by The Psycho Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/325302-art-modelling-the-brotherhood-of-the-lost/page/2/#findComment-4486475 Share on other sites
