This is my first woman's face ... I am not very satisfied so if you have any advice I am happy! I'm not overly wrapped up in orange hair, I think it will contrast with the gray / brown armor, but I'm wondering if I shouldn't go back to turquoise or purple already on the latter?

Cela fait longtemps que je n’ai rien posté ici.

Nous continuons à travailler sur la forge noire depuis 2020. J’ai personnellement eu un temps d’arrêt d’un an à la fin de 2020. J’ai créé une petite entreprise et il a fallu 1 an pour voir le jour

J’ai recommencé à peindre petit à petit pendant environ 3-6 mois et maintenant je veux vous montrer ce que vous avez manqué ces derniers temps...

After five years away… I finally picked up my brushes again

Hello everyone,

I thought I would start my first post here with a little bit of context, because my return to miniature painting didn't exactly happen under normal circumstances.

I have been painting miniatures for many years. At one point, painting was a huge part of my free time. I was particularly interested in large Mechanicum projects, conversions, weathering and, above all, creating an army that had its own identity and atmosphere.

And then… I stopped.

Not for a few months.

Not for a year.

For almost five years.

Why did I stop?

The funny thing is that there wasn't really one single reason.

The release of the Primaris Space Marines was probably the trigger. I had spent years building and painting my Space Marines, and suddenly the whole range was changing. The models I had invested so much time into felt like they belonged to a previous era.

Instead of adapting, I simply lost the motivation.

My painting desk gradually became a place where unfinished projects were stored rather than completed.

One project became two.

Two became five.

And eventually, I stopped painting altogether.

I still loved Warhammer. I still followed what was happening in the hobby. I still had ideas constantly running through my head.

I just wasn't painting anymore.

Then came the return

After several years, I eventually decided to pick up a brush again.

I didn't start with a new army.

I didn't set myself a huge goal.

I simply wanted to paint something.

And strangely enough, once I started again, I realised how much I had missed it.

My approach had also changed.

Five years ago, I was much more focused on getting a model "right". Today, I care much more about atmosphere, storytelling and creating something that feels like it belongs to a larger world.

That's probably why I came back to the Mechanicum.

But this time, I wanted to go much further.

Welcome to Westgan

My current project is a Dark Mechanicum force originating from a forge world called Westgan, somewhere on the edge of the Eye of Terror.

The idea is to create something that could almost pass for a loyalist Mechanicum force at first glance…

…and then make you realise that something is very, very wrong.

The army is being built around conversions, heavily weathered machinery, Titans, Knights, Mechanicum automata and a large collection of scenery.

I'm also trying to build an entire visual identity around it — not simply an army, but a world.

And that's where this project has taken me.

After five years without painting, I have somehow ended up building a Dark Mechanicum forge world, a gaming table, a collection of Titans and Knights, and eventually an entire Liber dedicated to Westgan.

Apparently I didn't learn anything about moderation during those five years. 

So here I am again

I'm still rediscovering some of the techniques I used years ago.

Some of my old paints and brushes have become museum pieces.

Some projects have been sitting unfinished for so long that I honestly had to look at old photographs to remember what I was trying to achieve.

But I'm enjoying it again.

And for me, that's the important part.

This time, I'm not trying to finish everything as quickly as possible.

I'm simply enjoying the process.

So I'll use this thread to document the journey — the miniatures, the conversions, the scenery, the mistakes, the experiments and, hopefully, the finished army.

Five years after putting down my brushes, Westgan is finally coming to life.

I was invited to a "convention" by some friends in Bordeaux last February. That motivated me to start painting again after nearly five years of inactivity (even though I did produce a few small things here and there). Here are photos of my "restart."

 

 

 

 

I had to repair some damage on the Warlord and touch up the paintwork—starting with short sessions. I had to relearn the techniques... to remember.
But my motivation was slowly returning.

The squids are getting electrified!

 

After a few experiments with flexible copper wire, I finally finished the energy bolts on my squids this morning.

 

The idea was to find a method that produced something relatively fine and irregular, yet sturdy enough to withstand handling and storage. Copper wire allows for very free-form shapes, and once painted, I think it works really well.

 

But more importantly, this miniature isn't just a one-off experiment; it serves as a prototype for what’s to come.

 

I promised to tackle the energy arcs on the Warp Gate once I started building it. These squids allow me to test the technique, the colors, and—above all—the overall look before moving on to something much more massive.

 

And while I’m at it... I’m tempted to take things even further.

 

The goal is to gradually rework all the army's electric weapons and effects to finally give them a cohesive visual style. Between the plasma weapons, the various energy weapons, and now these lightning arcs, there’s an opportunity to create something far more spectacular than what I’ve done so far.

 

Well... The question now is whether my motivation will survive the sheer amount of work involved.

 

But at least the prototype is a success!

Welcome back @Crevette! I can REALLY relate with what you say. I almost quit myself when the new heretic astartes came out, as the new upscaling and new rules made my whole army irrelevant and unplayable. But I tweaked a few things here and there and I managed to salvage the vast majority of it!

 

Glad to see you've overcome any creator blocks you might have had and looking forward to seeing more of your creations!
