I started learning to paint miniatures about a year ago on and off.  Recently I decided to try to put together an actual army to play with.    After watching a bunch of youtube videos I found myself liking armies that have deployment/reserve/deepstrike shennanigans. I generally like a direct approach to competitive games of any sort but Raven Guard's elusive and adaptive nature appealed to me.  I also like darker colour schemes.

Anyways... I plan to build up a TSF using pinion and a shadow force with perhaps the shadow strike kill team.  My first goal is to assemble a 1000 point list which im about half done.  I should finish in the next 30-60 days and be ready to play a game.

The starting list looks something like this...

TSF

Pinion

Chaplain

ravens fury/pfist

ASM x 5 , flamer x 2, vet sarge with pfist

Devs, 4 lascannons

Scout Squad, shotguns, vet sarge with power sword

Tac squads, 5 man x 3

SSKT

Scout Squad x 2

Vanguard Vets, dual claws x 2, pfist x 2

This clocks in at just under 1000 points.  I have 10 Tacs left to pain and I need to buy 2 boxes of scouts and the Vets.  So close to done!

Im not sure which direction to go after this since I've never played a game before so I don't know what exactly will appeal most to me.  I will need to get my ass kicked a bunch to figure out what direction to go in.

Here are some beta screenshots... Lascannon Devs

Unconfirmed reports indicate that the Tau Earth Caste was equipping Gue'vesa filth with modified lascannons using superior Tau metallurgy and scopes adapted for human vision.  The Imperium would very much like to obtain some prototypes;

quietly.

Devastator Sergeant Ott and his men thrive in the destroyed rubble of cities and industrial wastelands seeking cover and surprise from within mountains of twisted metal or blasted out buildings.  Recent covert operations on Ksi'm'yen have been a boon to the company's ranged firepower.  No one even knows anything is missing.

Brother Thune's vow of silence is a strict reminder of the importance of discipline and focus in service of the chapter's cult.  It also makes it easier to sneak up on someone with a power fist.

Veteran Sergeant Richter is said to have something of a complex.  As a raw scout he famously bludgeoned a Tyranid warrior into a blood stained smear using a broken and non functional eviscerator chainsword immediately earning himself a spot in the chapters assault squads.  He has since repaired the sword and reached the rank of Master Sergeant.

Although waging war in the 41st millennium armed with a shotgun borders on derangement, the Raven Guard 10th company takes this to another level with their guile and sense of humour.  Many Ork warbands are easily stopped in the tracks by the stealthy theft of the warboss's stash of teeth.  The ensuing chaos and infighting is enough to make Brother Thune giggle.

Nice paint scheme

Looks like youre off to a good start with your list.

I'd just start playing and see what works for you. The awesome thing about RG now is their formations are all fluffy but still bring something to the table.

You might want to flesh the TSF out a little bit more. Maybe a rhino or Razorback or two and maybe a 2nd scout squad to capitalize on their ignores cover rule and out flanking.

Welcome to the Ravenspire!

Quick note on your paint scheme. It looks good, and I definitely dig the blue details. Traditionally, the trim of their right shoulder pad is painted to reflect the company they belong to. It goes as follows: White/silver = 1st, yellow/gold = 2nd, red = 3rd, green = 4th, black = 5th, orange = 6th, purple = 7th, grey = 8th, blue = 9th.

Not to say that you HAVE to paint them accordingly, just giving you a heads up.

Also, if you want to save some points on your Vanguard Vets, Raven Guard are famous for using a lot of lightning claws. 4 of my Vanguard squad are rocking a pair of them, and the 5th is running a thunder hammer and storm shield (he is in front to soak fire).

Also, check the list of files along the right side of the main page. You'll find a pdf of Raven Guard insignia there that you can print on decal paper instead of paying Forge World prices for iconography.

I like using a Shadow Force and replacing the generic Captain with Shrike. I'm also a fan of the Raven Hawk Assault Group.

You should aim for being able to field at least 1850 points, as that is the most common points total for tournament play, and a lot of people like to play casually at that level as well.

Welcome to the Ravenspire!

You have a great start: a plan. After that the models are also looking really good and the back stories are fun! The Chaplain has my attention. I recognize the JP. Is the staff/Crozius GW parts? The rest escapes my bitz knowledge - care to share there?

Pretty sure the square-ish lascannons are Tau bits. Or so his back story would lead me to believe.

I do plan to add transfers on most models.  The scout squad I have does have insignia's on their right shoulders.  Im not going to follow the RG scheme exactly... doesnt leave enough room for me to mess around with them.

I actually don't care much for shrike!  His model is resin which i really really dont like working with so far.. fluff wise i dont know much just yet.  Is Raven Hawk likely to get shot down all at once?  I am a bit apprehensive about getting it for this reason.  How likely is it to get picked off all at once?

The modified lascannons come from anvil industries along with the chaplain Crozius, loin cloth, skull, torso, and lascannon scopes.  I also grabbed 5 raven themed helmets from them that I think should go on some sternguard vets.

I took a tac squad box and cannibalized it to make a 4 lascannon devs, 5 tacs,  and 1 chaplain with the bits i got from anvil.  I was trying to save money which I think i managed since the dev squad box only comes with 2 heavy weapons.  The chaplain jump pack is spellcrow... I think.  I actually dont care for the jump pack much.  The details on the resin arent smooth like plastic models.  I actually didnt know there was a difference between plastic and resin in terms of assembly/painting.  You guys would have had a nice laugh watching me try to prime the crozius without washing the resin.  The brush on primer just kept sliding around and pooling in certain spots.  It was like some scifi weirdness to me.  The joys of being a beginner?

Great looking scheme! Really has a distinct look to it.

I wasn't too keen on the Shrike model either - but may I suggest looking at picking up the Raven Guard Deathwatch mini from the Overkill box set? This guy:

I modified one just a bit for my counts-as Shrike (removed the Deathwatch shoulder mostly), and i think on ebay he costs under $10.

I love Shrike as a character, but his model isn't that great and he's kind of pricy for what he does, points wise.

I plan on kitbashing a Shrike model without his helmet on. Probably going to use Korvydae's body for it and some random other stuff. Like to try and find Shrike's jump pack.

The Stormraven is one of the more durable flying vehicles Space Marines have available. It should last at least a couple turns, more if your opponent isn't focusing a lot of fire at it.

Chugging away on my shadowforce formation.

Captain Hache's air support may not always be on time but they are always on target.  Brother Boris and Brother Saxon brandish the hose to wash away any and all xeno filth that pollutes the galaxy.  The hose is nearly always empty after a mission.

I'm a huge fan of your blue highlights alongside the black. I am definitely going to use that for inspiration when I restart my Ravenguard over. I can't tell how I feel about your blue hue on your metal components. I feel like if it was just in the recesses and the larger flat surfaces were more close to a neutral silver I would be a bigger fan.

Edit* Is that FW brass on the 'hood'? Also is that a FW decal on the drivers shoulder pad?

It is epic freehand.  The emperor guides my brush.

Ok yes.. FW transfers and brass.  The blue highlights are VMC basalt grey and VMC blue, 1 to 1 ratio.  Im still REALLY struggling with painting cloaks though.  I want to paint my sternguard vets with clocks/loin cloths but I'm so terrible at getting a blended look.

My shadow force is(will be) the following...

Captain, power armour,ex tenebris,melta bombs

Sternguard x 5, combi meltas

Vanguard Vets, Dual Claws x 2, Powerfists x 2, dual power swords for the sarge (fluffy choice)

Land Speeder, Heavy Bolter x 2

I think moving forward I will need a transports for the Sternguard.  I'm not sure melta sternguard with scout will be effective as often as they would with a rhino or razorback.  Anyone have thoughts on this?

Shadow Captain Oxor is a master of subterfuge and surprise.  His whereabouts are often unknown even to his direct superiors up until the moment he arrives.  His biggest strength as a commander is said to be his legendary patience.  Oxor delivers the emperor's wrath only at the moment when his target is most vulnerable.

Im fairly certain its the Kromlech Legionary Jump Pack, but since their website doesn't show a shot of it from the front its hard to be sure. I really like those intakes though. Its very sleek/stealth looking design. http://bitsofwar.com/home/365-legionary-jump-pack.html

It reminds me of the aesthetic on the 30k RG stuff, specifically Corax, Furies, and Mor Dethyan
