A Skjald's Tale of the Days of Darkness

So after deciding to make Hvarl be played by Bjorn Ironside instead of Rollo Lothbrok I realised I needed to make a new model. The old one was just too brutal and gigantic since that's what Rollo is, so it will be kept to lead the Varagyr when they're released.

As for Hvarl, here's his new version, still a bit gigantic since Bjorn is a titan but with more finesse into it.

Credit to Mike French from Heresy 30k who suggested the idea of the pelt cape and mocked out how it'd look like.

It still needs some green stuffing work done and I just ordered one of the new sekhmet plastic assault cannons to build the heavy bolter on but you can see where it's heading.

As the original iteration, I've wanted to keep the muscled armor pattern to match with Bulveye and Russ and use it as a unifying staple amongst my wolf Lords, and with the gem in the left shoulder I feel it still ties in better with Bulveye

She carried a handful of papers, though her aura told Magnus she was unhappy to be holding them. Shivani stood behind Gaumon, who spoke with some force to Ahriman.

Ahriman stared at the page he had been handed.

Magnus floated closer to Ahriman, reading what was written.

Over and over and over again, the same phrase.

The Wolves are coming.

Soon, on an uncompliant world near you.

So that's the special Vikings characters done and ready for paint stage. The helmet ed one is just a sample of the last nine I have to build which will be helmeted using the Jormugandr pattern helmet customised for the Dekk-Tra shown here.

These should go much faster since there will be no custom work other than the helmets.

Thanks my friend! I'm jealous that you actually have an army and not just two painted minis and 11 built veterans to show up for half a year of work, and at the quality you do em!

Can't wait to build the last 9 and get started with batch painting.

I'm wondering how to attach the bolters on the vets that actually don't have them on the hand. I've never really found a solution that fully satisfies me. Any ideas?

Technically they canbe put anywhere as they can mag-lock to the armour.

I prefer on the backpacks myself, as per my breachers, Leaves the armour at the back free, to add a blade or somthing

Hahaha... Glad i could help. Generally I struggle to get twc bits, so you must have done well there. They also do the holstered bolt pistols in the same style too.

Gotta say though I may get through a fair few models, but I do wish I had the sculpt/ conversion techniques that you have to make truly characterful key models. While I am happy at getting better at painting, I feel because I struggle to do character models, my army is more a faceless horde compared to your character driven unique army.

You should just throw yourself out there with some greenstuff and a desire to wreck models! Hair is a bit daunting at first but once you get the hang of it it's really simple. It's all about having patience and working on stages:

  • 1st mold the general shape without texture, how the base hair will flow
  • 2nd add some green stuff over the curated one and draw the main hairflow lines
  • 3rd add strand by strand the detail work to give it more volume

It's better to work in batches since it does take time to curate and if you get impatient you can mess your prior job!

And we've got so many nice faces and options as SW players that we can assemble a lot of unhelmeted dudes without repeating faces and without greenstuff!

Also, I assume you're an ebay bits prowler like myself so keep an eye always for exciting FW heads and snatch them to use whenever you find a good inspiration match. I'm still waiting to the right model to use the fantastic Sevatar head I bought 10 months ago!

Just sketched a quick concept for my Speaker of the Dead, what do you think?

I'm normally not one for static poses but both miniatures this is made from are kinda posing in the wind, which is okay far and between in the army.

Should i keep the arm pointing as if he's instructing someone to go forth or go full poser and have him holding a Great frost blade?

Of course tabard will be changed by wolf pelt in the final version.

Give him a great big axe. Looks cool

I had a really wacky thought.... Infact might try it out for myself.

Rollo, as a speaker of the dead, using Polux as a frame and carrying a big axe in 2 hands, like one of the wulfen axes.

Polux because I think he is bigger than your average Marine so would be a good starting point for Rollo

Speaker of the dead because I seem to remember that on multiple occasions he is singing pems and chanting during battle to inspire the men around him

Rollo did seem to lead the bersekers during the S3's Siege of Paris, so that works IMO.

Thanks for the feedback guys. Already got quite into the conversion with reposing of the arms and pelt transfer. Really torn on Rollo since I'm planning on him to lead the Varagyr.

So all left to decide is he head. Originally I was doing Floki as the Rune caster but he fits in both roles, and I feel like I'm going to field way more often the Speaker of the Dead rather than the Rune caster.

Any suggestions on who to cast as the Rune caster if I make Floki the Speaker and vice versa?

Okay so I've decided on Floki to be the Speaker of the Dead and he'll look like this:

As for the caster of Runes, I tried a head that I really like since it fits into the pose, flow and size but.. Who should this be from Ragnar's army?

Your conversions are totally insane dude. Really hyped up the wolves!

Thank you so much Charlo! To be totally honest every time I look at the champion model (rune caster) I am riddled with doubts and am tempted to chop the legs off and use some other base instead. There´s just something about the pose and the pelvis that isn´t quite right but can´t really pin it down to anything in particular. So there is the distinct possibility that I cut the legs out and graft the torso to some other legs :)

Where is the pelt on the speaker of the dead from?

That´s the pelt of Ulrik. If I use a cape from a model I like to use the pelt of that same model for the sake of consistency. That way they have the same flow, texture, etc.

Actually... what if I make this head for the Speaker of the Dead and I remake the Rune Caster and make him be Floki as intended from the beginning...

I reckon this is as much a Speaker of the Dead as you get in the Vikings series :smile.:
