Good coffee break spent scrolling through this. Its been said said earlier in the thread, I really like your colour scheme, simple and really effective.

Thank you Baz thats very kind of you! I'm getting there slowly but surely.

Good evening all. A small update from me; I moved house last weekend. I didn't want to but unfortunately i had too. That means hobby funds for this month are a little more limited. But to soften the moving blow I bought myself this.

The bits are really useful for me for making Sergeants and trying to spruce up my Kasrkin.

I had a spare Kasrkin Grenadier model but I'm not planning on using any grenade launchers in my list so I had a brain wave and decided to do a little kit bashing. These are my results so far...

I'm pleased to present Colour Sergent Bourne, known in the company as "Colour Bourne" or just "Colour". He has a scion head, Cadian command box torso, and accessories, sergeant arm with stripes painted yellow to differentiate him from the normal Sergeants, Kasrkin legs because I cant green stuff knee pads and of course he carries the company's colours. Not my best painting ever, in fact the legs were all ready done about a year ago, I wish i had stripped them first now and repainted everything. Oh well never-mind. I still need to do the transfers and some tidying up but I am pretty happy with him! I also made a small eBay purchase...I will update when it arrives from the UK.

May the Emperor protect you!

Afternoon everyone, I have a small update.

Yesterday I found a shop called 'Giant Hobby' in Kōenji, one stop from Nakano in Tokyo. For anyone interested check out the Japan page under regions. Whilst I was there I picked up a couple of new brushes and some grass tufts for basing. So today Ive been adding the grass to my basses and wow what a difference they make! Also with my new brushes I went through all my guys trying to tidy things up, adding detail where possible, torch lenses, sights, tried to add weathering to the transfers as they looked too clean etc. Also I was inspired by the Death troopers from "Rouge One". I went back and added muzzle burn to all my Hot shot weapons. The Death trooper blasters are black as are the barrels on my Hot shot weapons so I figured there would be a similar affect from the heat on the ends of the barrels.  Anyway here are a few pictures. Sorry for the lighting, my new apartment inst as good as the last place for photos. Also I couldn't get the camera to focus on the muzzle burn but it is there! Honest!

Other news, first page fluff has been updated a little. Also, I have blown this months and next months hobby budget on eBay and another site. I have 4 packages incoming from the UK. Stand by for updates.

Your painting looks good. You're being too hard on yourself.

Digging the color scheme and the fluff.

My only critique is that drilling your gun barrels would make for a little more realism. A small pin vice works wonderfully for that. The upside is that it can be done on finished models with only minor touch ups needed.

What a wonderful morale boost to come back from work and see so many uplifting comments. Emperors blessings to you all!

Looking great, keep up the good work

Thank you sir! The 171st will not let you down.

Excellent work

May the 171st Cadian Airborne (Kasrkin) continue to grow :smile.:

With my most recent purchases reinforcements are inbound. Stand by for updates.

That's very kind of your sir. I think being a member of this forum always inspires me to try harder to achieve a better look. I agree with you 100% on the barrel situation. The longer I look at them the more I have the urge to sort them out. I think I will see how healthy Aprils paycheck is looking and maybe treat myself to a pin vice.

wow mate that grass on the large bases especially works extremely well.  Looks so real.

Thank you sir! I really recommend it if your going for the wilderness kind of base, super easy to do too!

  • 2 weeks later...

Good morning all. The wait is over as one of my packages has arrived therefor it is time for a small update and my first review. This package actually came from Russia, not the UK.

About 3 weeks ago I was looking through the 40k reddit pages and came across a Dark Eldar dirty Xenos thread. They were discussing alternative miniatures, being a sucker for pretty things I thought I would have a look. The link was for a site called "Ghost Miniatures". The work was indeed beautiful. I scrolled through the inventory list and then came across the very last item. It looked suspiciously guardsman like. The mini was named "Sergiant Lucas" and I recognised it straight away as a sculpt of "Sergeant Lukas Bastonne", the old Cadian character from past editions who didn't have his own mini. The face looks exactly like the old codex picture but whats more important is, hes wearing a full set of Carapace armour and therefor, for all intents and purposes, looks like a Kasrkin. With the lack of variety in the Kasrkin line I had to buy him! I'm not sure how it was sculpted, I don't think its a recast as there's no existing Kasrkin model like this at the moment but I'm still new to these things.  So here is my attempt at a review;

The box and packaging are great, full of bubble wrap with all items sealed in a separate little bag. In total the shipping took about 2 weeks, there was a public holiday in Japan during that time which may have slowed my item being processed at customs though.

I took this picture after I had already removed some of the pieces but as you can see there are 3 head options and 3 weapon options, the arms use a male/female style slot connection while the heads have a long thin joint that goes down into the neck hole. The model did not come with a base. There was very little flash on the resin, I have found no bubbles yet and only one small mold line along the power sword which was easily removed with a modelling knife. These pictures were taken before the bits were cleaned, they were quite shiny compared to the other resin mini I worked with and I'm assuming that's the left over release agent. So they will be having a soak before painting.

As you can see here its definitely "Sergeant Lukas Bastonne" as it even has his signature scared face. The addition of the helmet head is very nice too!

http://i.imgur.com/Yd3RPSM.jpg

A head size comparison with a Scion head. As you can see they scale perfectly and the detail is lovely.

The body, complete with cape and accessories in place. The detail on the pouches is very nice, the only downside for me is the Kasrkin style backpack is molded into the cape

so I wont be able to change it. If you look carefully you can see the clasp that holds the cape on the front of the armour is just like the one visible in Bastonnes art work.

Finally my favourite piece, the power sword.

So here is a dry run with blue tack, I have not yet attached the back pack antenna but this gives you an idea of overall size using a standard GW base. The left is my slightly converted standard GW Kasrkin Sergeant and to the right is the Wargames exclusive commissar. The mini has an awesome mid melee attack pose which is great considering the Kasrkin are pretty static looking.

Well that's the end of my review. Its a lovely little mini and I am looking forward to painting him. It looks like he will become a Sergeant in my army. Name suggestions are welcome! Here is the link for anyone who is interested;

That's a beautiful mini.

Brilliant. Ordered! With the addition of some Xenos scum!

Holy hell that mini os amazing! I'll have to order one now haha

I'm glad you guys like the mini! It really is a bit of a hidden gem. I'm sure you guys will do a far better paint job than me too, I'm looking forward to the results.

Another small update, the last of my items arrived from the UK today so I'm very pleased.

This will give me plenty to do for the rest of my spring break! I will probably have more updates soon.

These are coming along great!

I have a soft spot  for Sentinels, glad to see one earlier on in the thread!

Keep up the good work.

Thank you Jud. :happy.:  Me too, eventually I want to have enough Sentinels to run the Emperors talons recon company to act as my ground presence before the airborne arrive!

Well update time, I finished my resin Kasrkin chap and I am pretty happy with how he looks. I decided to go with the helmet and bolt pistol. I removed the power cables from the bolt pistol how ever as in my opinion it didn't really make sense having them for a magazine fed weapon. Still a long way to go skill wise but model by model I feel like I am improving a little.

And then with those beautiful forge-world transfer sat looking at me I had to go back and "tweak" my Valkyrie.

It looks a little shiny in the pictures but its really not too bad in person. I want to weather them a little and give it all a matt coat eventually so I imagine that will dull things down a little. I'm not sure if these transfers were old or if all forge world ones are like this but they were A LOT thinner than the normal GW ones and split really easy. Also nearly every single piece had to  be individually cut which was...testing! :teehee:  But now I am really happy with it. Especially the little warning signs dotted around, just makes it feel more real for me. I actually want some more warning style transfers so I'm thinking of buying a cheap jet or helicopter kit for them. Any recommendations which scale is best for transfers? 1/35? 1/48?

Well I will start working on my new Kasrkin arrivals soon so stand by for updates. As always, the Emperor protects.

I got a 1:35 US Navy F16 for mine, just the transfer sheet from ebay, so I didn't have to buy a whole model, I don't have any real good closeup shots but things like ejector seat warnings beneath the canopy, the "NAVY" logos, serial numbers on the sides of the nose and various other small bits of text and warnings.

Thank you sir. I will stay on the look out for some 1/35 transfer. :happy.: Lovely looking Vendetta btw!

Well I'm Glad i stumbled onto this little hidden gem of a plog

Very well done indeed and from the beginning post to now i see how your painting is improving

makes me want to got dust off my Scions box i bought and undercoated and actually finish painting them!!

please don't think i'm nit picking when i say this, but constructively saying, are you considering painting the face lenses a colour or leaving them black?...

i think an orange shaded lense plate would make em pop! ...so to speak,

as mentioned by others, i really like your sentinel, everyone loves sentinels don't they... ?? :tongue.:

well keep up the great work and look forwards to seeing more models in the future of the 171'st.

Cheers, Mithril

Thank sir so much for your comment! :blush.::happy.:

I do agree with the visor/lense plate. So far with lenses, scopes etc I have been basically cheating and using the gw gem paints so I'm not sure how or what colour to do the visor. Like you said orange similar to my avatar would look great but I just don't know if I can make it look good. >< But I do agree the visors do need more pop! I will experiment on a spare kasrkin I have and see if I can make something work.

Haha yes, as I mentioned before Im hoping to have 5 more Sentiel friends for that guy to eventually run the Emperors recon company formation! Just Japan prices are a little steep. How ever I will be visiting family in the UK during the summer so I'm thinking of mass buying while I'm there.

I will do my best to keep the updates coming!

I've been contemplating using the gem paints for lenses and the likes..

Are you happy with how they turn out vs using regular paints and layering / highlighting?

Well personally for some one of my level they are perfect. For smaller lights and lenses I think they work great. For bigger areas I think its down to preference. If you look at my Sentinel the large search light doesn't look amazing but for the smaller parts I think it works a treat. I just use rune fang steel as the base which makes them a little darker compared to the recommended base (I cant remember the name), pretty sure a metallic base is necessary though as I once tried it over black and it didn't work at all. They are a little odd to paint though. The texture is almost like a gel. You don't need to thin it down like a normal paint, rather just build it up in the areas you want to be a deeper colour. They have a glossy finish that does catch the light and give it a glassy look which is nice. The main thing I have learned is they are far more see through that other paints so make sure your basing, edge highlighting, etc etc is done first and tidy and then do these last as you can still see through a little.

p.s I should mentioned Ive never tried lenses the normal but this is has been my "One pot" solution so far haha
